We desperately need to reverse the current course of action. A fast and reliable bus service is paramount to encouraging people to use thair cars less. The
@MayorofLondon
's plan to dismantle the bus priority network and reduce speeds does the opposite.
This may sound silly, but even when walking, I feel uneasy seeing the 20mph signs plastered everywhere. It feels like it's a way for the new urbanists to remind us commoners that they're in charge, akin to when dictators do the same with their symbols.
@JohnJohnStewart
"Under powers fom the Traffic Management Act, the government could ultimately take control of an authority's roads where they are deemed to be widely mismanaged"
This can't happen soon enough. It's insane how a small number of ideologues can easily destroy the road network.
@jonburkeUK
It's disappointing that you keep on refusing to acknowledge the opposition to LTNs that comes from people without cars and regular public transport users. You can add "stubborn" to the list.
@Councillorsuzie
Thank you Susan. Hopefully London can finally have its first female mayor, and more importantly, a mayor who's empathetic and listens to the people he's meant to serve. We haven't had that yet.
@willnorman
Terrible. Whiston Road has been turned into a death trap by the London Fields LTN. Cycling incidents have quadrupled,
@hackneycouncil
must suspend it ASAP and investigate better alternatives.
@ms_not_miss
@apchara
@Wheels4Well
Bus lanes have been reduced by misguided green policy. On Saturday it took 2 hours for my bus to travel 3 miles from Surrey Quays to Lewisham. Politicians serious about net zero should reward public transport users with faster journeys. Instead they slow our buses 🤷♀️
@JohnJohnStewart
@jonburkeUK
I was again affected by his London Fields LTN yesterday. Huge amounts of traffic on Dalston Lane throughout the day that caused my bus to be terminated early on my first half and made me finish late. We've had 3 and a half years for the traffic to "bed in" now.
Local authorities knew well before widespread/blanket 20mph limits were a thing that the change in avg speed is only marginal. So why continue to implement them in more and more places if not for their symbolism?
@ediz1975
@MayorofLondon
@IslingtonBC
All the money spent on planters, parklets, and rain gardens that could be spent on cleaning the drains and resurfacing main roads. But that wouldn't make our precious councillors feel like they're changing the world.
@georgebernhard
"Prior to the new restrictions, 45 out of 100 cars in Edinburgh travelled above 25 mph – one year later, the figure had dropped to 31."
So the vast majority of people still drive as they did before. Thanks for proving my point.
@willnorman
Not this crap again. Having limits that nobody follows benefits no one. Restricting 20mph limits to places where it makes sense will increase speed compliance.
It's happening, I'm moving to Essex in July. Small bungalow in the middle of the Stort Valley. I'm looking forward to a calmer and more peaceful kind of living. I'm trying to decide on whether to keep working in the capital long term or find a job closer to me.
@StreathamLTN
The car was obviously not doing 20, but keep up the delusion that roundel signs and no changes to the road layout have any impact on road safety.
@TfL
@MayorofLondon
My bus was all of a sudden limited to 10mph on the 30mph dual carriageway Montfichet Road E15 because it thought I had entered the bus station. This is the "Intelligent" speed assessor that us dumb drivers are supposed to rely on. How is this safe?
@SaveOurBuses38
Bus passengers are made to suffer in favour of cycle lanes and pay and display parking spaces. The wrong type of policy for a dense urban environment with a limited amount of road space.
@CharlotteCGill
I don't see it happening unless she gets out of her comfort zone and starts engaging with disenfranchised voters. Most of the people I talk to in my age group are fed up with Khan, but they're simply planning not to vote. She needs to give them a reason to.

They shouldn't be issued permits if they live on roads that have been closed to traffic. We're subsidizing their car storage while experiencing all the side effects from their driving and none of the benefits from these schemes.
@ShitBikePhotos
I don't. As a pedestrian I rarely feel unsafe, and when I do it's usually because of the road layout. The A12 around Bromley-By-Bow for example could do with some more barriers/bollards separating the pavement from the carriageway, and controlled pedestrian crossings at slip
You can't have "express" bus routes and refuse to build efficient road infrastructure in the pursuit of "traffic evaporation". The two are at odds with each other.
Getting between Lewisham and Elephant & Castle could soon get a lot easier.
All aboard the Bakerloop! 🚌🟤
Today, Sadiq's announced a new Superloop-style express bus service along the route of the proposed Bakerloo line extension, which is still waiting on government funding.
@TheFox89688362
The South Fulham LTN is the most NIMBY of them all, with residents allowed to drive through it as much as they like, while the peasants delivering goods and services to their precious LTN have to double their mileage by circumnavigating it. I don't know how they can possibly
@BobFromAccounts
Well, for starters, he's hypocritical about clean air. He's happy to pollute Londoners as long as it is his vanity event, for which he charged £20 per person. He also got rid of free travel on NYE causing more traffic than ever last night.
Voted. 3x Tory for the first time in my life. I urge everyone who has been negatively affected by Sadiq Khan's policies to lend their vote to Susan Hall. She isn't perfect, but no candidate is. By allowing Khan to be re-elected you're unvoluntarily co-signing his misguided
This is what my colleagues and I have to deal with.
@SadiqKhan
has failed to get a grip on crime. If he wins again in May I'm moving out, I can't possibly stomach another 4 years of his dangerous incompetence.
I hadn't noticed that the DfT published new guidance encouraging LAs to allow motorcycles in bus lanes! Also notable that they finally introduced a standard bus lane width of 4m, which way too many existing bus lanes fall short of.

Extension to the N/S Circular which already was in his manifesto, and was the plan when the ULEZ was first introduced in 2019. Here's Khan promising he wouldn't extend the ULEZ beyond that, 8 months before he announced the latest expansion.
@TheFox89688362
He actually set a yearly target of £100m in speeding fines to fund the police. He made driving above 20mph a crime so that he could raise funds. People like this should be nowhere near positions of power, yet here we are.
@theJeremyVine
@metpoliceuk
You put yourself in harm's way to prove a point. There's nothing smart or admirable about what you're doing, hopefully no one in your audience is influenced by your bad decisions.
@VincentStops
You're correct that it was BJ providing the funding and encouraging councils to put LTNs in place, but ultimately it was the councils' own decision what to do with the money, and the councils' own choice to refuse to listen to the public's concerns over these schemes.
@ediz1975
"It was always like this" is the one that irks me the most. Then why didn't you do something about it instead of wasting money on surrounding roads that were never like this.
@BobFromAccounts
@TowerHamletsNow
Yep. The school run is major cause of traffic. LTNs and the delay they cause to buses have failed to induce a shift to more sustainable modes, quite the opposite. Any rational person can see we need a different approach.

and Tom are happy to break section 36(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1988, the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 and Schedule 2 of the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988. The offence of failing to comply with a no entry sign carries a fine of £50.
@willnorman
Removal of bus lanes, two way cycle lanes going through bus stops. There may not be a war on motorists, but there certainly is one on bus passengers.
@TheFox89688362
How would that even work? You tap in without knowing how much you'll be charged? I can't see many people taking the tube if that is the case
@VincentStops
They by default do not benefit everyone. Their whole point is to create high car ownership low traffic oases, and funnel all traffic onto main roads "where it belongs". It's a similar concept to the car centric cul-de-sac suburbs that were in fashion in the 1960s.
@MassJumbo
@georgebernhard
The A406, A12 (formerly A102), A40 etc used to be actual motorways in section before the GLA was created and TfL took over from the Highways Agency. They were only declassified as legislation wouldn't allow TfL to be in charge of motorways.
Let’s talk data …..
What are the odds of every car traveling at 10.26 MPH over a 7 minute period or is the data not as good as they say 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Gated data 😳😳😳😳
@TheFox89688362
@GBNEWS
Cycling activists low-key hate public transport as people have shown time and time again that, despite their efforts, they would rather use PT than take on cycling. Making it free would actually do something to reduce the number of cars on the road.
@jonburkeUK
And now that your LTNs have failed to reduce car ownership and congestion, what would you propose to speed up the buses that have been slowed down by funneling all traffic onto a small amount of roads?
@LiabilityLiam
@DavidEGatesUK
@jjrscott
Not everyone is a prodigy, most people need around 30 hours. Stop seeing the world through your lens and try to be more understanding.
@Cycling_In_LDN
The actual rate is actually much higher, 85% of drivers break 20mph limits in free flowing conditions! When speed limits are inadequate it brings the law into contempt.
@CycleCalm
On the other hand, I don't really like the way people on the opposing side are shifting the discussion to speed limits for bicycles. To me, it's not a question of whether a certain limit is being broken, the cyclist was going too fast to react to the pedestrian, and that's what
@PauloCampbell
Four years ago, 5000 drivers used this road as the quickest way to get from A to B.
Now they are forced to take a longer route, generating more pollution and congestion.

There are plenty of similar railway arches around East London (particularly LBTH) and they're home to many businesses. Some established, and some changing hands every now and then, but the last thing they are is derelict. Hackney walk on the other hand...

@JAlaszewski
@CharlotteCGill
@willnorman
As you can see from the picture, most of them are not choosing that. So what now? Do we keep on downgrading the road network and increasing congestion in the hope that people will finally switch? Or could it be time to throw away the sticks and take out the carrots.
@CycleCalm
@jamesrbuk
They also run "Zoom by Ocado" which is motorbikes only. I haven't read into this specific warehouse, but the one near my workplace is mostly motorcycle traffic.
@StreathamLTN
@streathamaction
By that logic most of the South Circular would be considered a rat run. I agree with you, a huge chunk of London was not built with cars in mind. But arbitrarily designating certain roads for through traffic and closing others is not the answer to that.
@cyclingvia
@JAlaszewski
@CharlotteCGill
@willnorman
How is increased congestion an improvement? Everyone loses from an inefficient road network. My commentary was about how people still drive, despite it being made inconvenient to encourage them to give up their cars. But the reality is, you can't force people to do anything they

So far I don't have any long term plans to leave England, but you never know what might happen 😁 Thank you for the wishes, even if I do leave London, I plan on still using this account to discuss transport infrastructure and make sure everyone's voices are heard.
Looks like the Independent Republic of Newham have unilaterally put up 20mph signs without any TMO or approval from the DfT.
To top it off the first two pictures are approaches to 30mph and 40mph TfL roads they have no control over 🤦
I have no trust left in local democracy.
