Tonight we've written to Gavin Williamson to ask him to urgently clarify why he's recommended that primary schools in Hackney reopen next week, despite other areas where they will stay closed having far lower case rates. So many concerned by this today.
To repeat, welcome the coverage & interest, but we aren't 'banning cars'.
All streets remain open for access to those who need to drive -🛵, 🏍,🚕, 🚐, 🚒,🚑,🚓, & 🚍.
What we're proud to be doing in this plan is clearly prioritising people over private cars -🚶♂️,🚶♀️, 🛴,👩🦼, &🚴♀️.
All this will be cleaned up by our fab parks & green spaces team, they're
#keyworkers
who've been out day in day out to keep parks open. Leaving crap behind, isnt the way you thank them & is completely unacceptable. Don't just
#ClapForOurCarers
treat them & our parks with respect
Anyone seeing these videos tonight will be as shocked & horrified as I am by this attack on two Hackney police officers. My thoughts are with both officers & praise their bravery when faced with this situation. Our police are here to protect us & scenes like this are unacceptable
This is truly despicable & society should never accept such behaviour - we are here to protect you! The officers are safe, but clearly shaken & incredibly brave too. Arrests will be made... this must stop. BCU Cmdr Marcus Barnett
Have been out with response team from
@MPSHackney
since 2:30pm. Deployed from Stoke Newington & already seen some interesting incidents across Clapton and London Fields. Met some great residents & officers, lots of good conversations about Hackney & real passion for policing.
Walking down Seven Sisters having been at Wick Road, we can't fix this road quick enough. Alienating six lane motorways that cut communities in half have no place in London. What we need is a narrower road, proper green infrastructure & real walking & cycling friendly routes🚶♀️🚴♂️
Decent message, but pollution doesn't just 'find its way into the River Lee (or Lea)', it is dumped, leeches & ends up there because of deliberate actions, poor infrastructure & a failure of regulation & investment from
@EnvAgency
& others. They can & must do better.
Unfortunately, pollution finds its way into the River Lee which can cause health issues to anyone who enters it. Please keep out of the water and stay happy and healthy this spring .
Really moving interview with
@jowhiley

@AndrewMarr9
today, totally right about how those with learning disabilities have been treated through the pandemic. Glad we have started to do dedicated vaccination events in Hackney to support those with learning disabilities.
In case you missed it. I spoke to
@AndrewMarr9
this morning before he spoke to
@MattHancock
Thanks to all CCGs who are now taking it upon themselves to prioritise LD people for the vaccine 👏🙏
One part of the debate around LTNs & creating livable streets I find really odd is the sort of 'Hackney birther' argument, that says newcomers are imposing them on longstanding residents. Reality is 1st LTNs were created in Hackney by local people in 1970s before I was even born.
I won't retweet the offensive & criminal letter received by
@jonburkeUK
today, suffice to say it is disgusting, completely unacceptable and chimes with the issues I raised earlier in the week. Those in public life whether MPs or cllrs should not be subject to this type of abuse.
Today I wrote to Tim Martin & Wetherspoons demanding they remove these shambolic anti-lockdown posters. Totally inappropriate given number of deaths we're seeing locally & pressure on our health services.
Staff at Baxter's Court are grt & pubs are hurting, but this is still wrong
If you create people friendly streets, shockingly people come to use them.
Great news from
@metecoban92
that Stoke Newington LTN is being made permanent it's anchored in a flourishing Church Street:

Devastated to hear Rabbi Pinter lost his fight with this terrible disease. His ldrship not just in the past couple of weeks, but over many yrs did so much for Hackney & Charedi community. He served as a Lab Cllr & ldr of Yesodey Hatorah Girls Sch. Thoughts with his family tonight
Thoughts with Rabbi Pinter, his family and friends tonight. Have privately been in touch & just want to say how much we all appreciate his work during this crisis, I hope he makes a full recovery.

Yes, I know it's sunny 🌞
Yes, I know our parks are beautiful 🌳
Yes, I know it's frustrating being inside 🏡🏙
But please only go out for exercise & then go home.
Don't picnic, linger, congregate or use closed areas.
Be respectful & maintain social distancing

A hero from
@NHSHomerton
who has died serving Hackney & fighting this terrible disease. I hope his death wasn't as a result of continuing issues around testing & PPE, but it raises Qs. A sobering reminder of the lives being lost to keep us safe & the contribution BAME staff make.
Two awful incidents in Hackney tonight, two lives cut short by violence. Thoughts w/ family & friends. Witnessed response of dedicated emergency services to fatal stabbing in Morning Lane. Complex causes of this recent rise in violence, requiring ongoing multilayered response 1/2
More tomorrow, but a poignant end to the yr. I'd like to thank
@jonburkeUK
for all his hard work in Woodbury Down, his ldrship on climate change, transport & sustainability as well as his boundless belief in positive role of local Govt. I will miss an amazing colleague & friend.
Today, after six fantastic years as a Hackney Councillor, and four as a Cabinet Member in one of the most environmentally ambitious local authorities in the country, I confirmed to the
@mayorofhackney
that I am moving and, therefore, stepping down from both roles. ⚡️ ♻️ 🚲 🌳
Brilliant work from over the border in Tower Hamlets, impressed that a complex web of organisations can move so swiftly to act and remove this statue. Even more shocking that it was re-sited there so recently.
It's freezing & we are in
#lockdown
, but still good to see people walking, cycling, playing & genuinely enjoying their streets as they take their daily exercise or go out for essentials in some of the low traffic neighbourhoods in Hackney today.
Our Hackney parks & green spaces have stayed open during all phases of lockdown. It's been hard & but it's only been possible because of the work of our incredible
@hackneycouncil
parks & green spaces team. This is a heartfelt thank you, please treat them & our parks with respect

Waiting for the 276 bus on Rectory Road reminds me:
1) Far too many drivers are still speeding in Hackney.
2) We need all roads to be 20mph with enforcement.
3) There is now a huge negative contrast between Rectory Road & surrounding LTNs & Church Street.
4) The gyratory must go.
Earlier today Deputy Mayor
@AnntoinetteBra1
& visited the
@hackneycouncil
team who are helping to distribute the hard won 1,600 Govt laptops to some of the most vulnerable children in Hackney impacted by digital divide. Still a huge amount of unmet need & we'll keep campaigning.
A photo from earlier in the week, love the new stenciling on our low traffic neighbourhood planters. Not only are we repairing them quickly if they're vandalised, but also turning them into a network of signs helping residents to engage in the consultation
So a victory in a battle we should have never had to fight.
Govt's climbdown today on primary schools is welcome news for heads, teachers & staff across Hackney. I know it will be disruptive, but a huge relief to so many parents, carers & children.
There clearly was no rationale.
A chaser sent to DfE at lunch time, still no reply, in the meantime
@AnntoinetteBra1
& I have submitted an FOI to chase it up: . Apparently there's a set of data or analysis out there that means LAs, schs, SAGE &
@LondonADPH
are wrong. If so, let's see it.
Let me be clear selling or buying takeaway alcohol or similar is not essential during lockdown, and I'm sure not what the Government had in mind went it made it easier for premises to offer 'takeaway'. I was sent & saw the scenes in Broadway Market & on all fronts unacceptable.
Vandalism, death threats, abuse & a comparison to East Germany, North Korea, Trump, Saddam Hussein - common themes bad spelling & a complete unwillingness to engage with the central issue -there are too many private cars travelling through Hackney. But we will continue to listen.
I understand people’s anger at images shared yesterday. Some of the actions were unacceptable, but equally 1,000s of Hackney residents were following the rules; legitimately taking exercise & maintaining physical & mental health. 280,000 people many with no private open space 1/5
Again, parks are a lifeline for Hackney - together we can keep them safe & open:
✅ exercise in local parks or quiet streets
✅ keep moving so don’t block up parks for others
✅keep 2m distance
❌ picnic, sunbathe, play sports
❌drive to a park far from home
❌go in if busy
Ouch! I've done better halves, but today was still my best
#HackneyHalf
even w/ injury so happy. Incredible atmosphere & thanks so much for team of people who made it happen, residents who came out to support (& shout go Phil) as well as all my fellow runners!
2:41:36 vs 2:35:34.
In 2019, had the chance to visit Vienna & Karl Marx Hof, a shinning example of Red Vienna's legacy of public housing. Closer to home in Hackney, residents have moved into the wonderful new Council Housing on Frampton Park estate that has more than a few design features in common.
Thanks to all 42,645 residents who voted for me on Thursday. Congratulations to all 57 councillors who were elected, I look forward to working with them to represent the people of Hackney over the next 4 years, & to building a fairer, safer & more sustainable Hackney. Lots to do.
First time I've seen all 3 cover images together, an incredible collage of London women who as keyworkers have helped lead the frontline response to this crisis including

This afternoon I have written to the Chief Executive of
@HackneyCouncil
to tender my resignation, which has been accepted, please find a copy of that letter attached to this tweet/post.
A fast cycle across the borough this afternoon, thanks to everyone who said hello including
@pedalmeapp
. Slightly jealous of their power assisted pedalling. Great to see LTNs working well & some early impact of the
#ULEZ
perhaps as there seemed to be more EV vehicles around.
Terrible this case ended in legal action, I've supported Ruby & her family from close to the start. Hackney celebrates afro-hair not just in our museum, but in the school system. We must recognise how stigmatising policies that don't get this right can be.
It's been a long journey of resident engagement, officer hard work & political leadership, but proud to say that from today with the rollout of the Stamford Hill CPZ Areas W & Y, all Hackney's streets are now covered by CPZs. CPZs benefit everyone & a key climate & air qual tool.
This morning I was struck by this beautiful tree in blossom near where I live, at the weekend people were taking photos with it. Taking small moments to appreciate the world is important.
Just back from a quick 🚴♂️ via London Fields & Well Street Common. Thanks to all the
@hackneycouncil
staff &
@MPSHackney
who I saw supporting social distancing. Thank you also to the vast majority of residents who were using their parks safely. I saw couples, families & households
I am deeply concerned that replacing ‘stay at home’ with the meaningless ‘stay alert’ whilst lockdown is still in effect & as we head into summer will lead to more confusion about the rules & ultimately to more resentment growing between citizens, as well as authorities. 5/5
Couldn't agree more. I basically left school at 14/15 with nothing, went to Worcester College of Technology to do 5 resit GCSEs (the opportunity to do this is really important) & then went on to do 5 A-Levels there before going on to university. Second & Third chances are vital!
If you didn't quite get the exam results you wanted it's OK. You are STILL great & you are STILL capable. There's loads of alternative routes to get to where you want to be. So keep your head up and come down to our careers festival!

As I said yesterday, this is a result of a multi-decade approach to active travel. However, also proud to be working across the Council & the borough with
@metecoban92
to accelerate this work through our 2018 commitments, Climate Emergency declaration & Emergency Transport Plan.
🏆 Hackney had the biggest rise in cycling in England last year
🚴🏾♂️ A third of you cycle once a week, up from 23% the previous year
🚴🏿♀️ 16% of you ride three times a week
🗓️ You’re more likely to cycle five times a week than anywhere else in London
ℹ️:
Really excited by this new green cycling & walking route from Leabridge to Dalston & beyond, for too long many of the junctions have prioritised cars over people. This work with

I come back to this, throughout nearly 3 months of lockdown,
@hackneycouncil
staff have been out every day keeping our parks open, safe, clean & maintained. All they ask in return is for people to use them respectfully, if a bin is full, take your rubbish home etc.
It's not hard.
Eight days on & still as true as when I recorded it.
👍Respect each other
👍Respect our staff
👍Respect our parks
👎Don't litter, pee or commit anti-social behaviour.
We're opening our toilets, increasing bins, putting in more enforcement, changed signs & working with
@MPSHackney
Also important to honour & recognise enormous contribution & legacy these communities bring to Hackney & hard work happening today alongside activists like
@nathanlawkc
to support those leaving persecution in Hong Kong, this new generation of Hong Kongers must be supported in UK.
Grt news, I used to represent Hoxton West as a cllr, it's a ward & place shaped by diverse communities & rich with social housing, but for too long it suffered from high air pollution & was a cut through to the City; while having some of the lowest car ownership in the borough.
NEW: I’m delighted to announce that
@HackneyCouncil
will be making the Hoxton West LTN scheme permanent.
Traffic and pollution levels are down, with bus speeds improving.
Together, we will rebuild a greener Hackney with cleaner air, healthier lives & better neighbourhoods 👊🏼✌🏾
A real step forward on promoting active travel, improving safety & public health, stopping drivers breaking the rules (& linked criminal damage) & tackling toxic air. Worth saying roughly 80%+ of fines/PCNs aren't levied on cars registered in Hackney. Thanks to cross Council work
Last night at Cabinet we agreed all of this, important leadership from the administration, officers &
@metecoban92
to deliver an ambitious programme to reduce traffic, improve air quality, support public transport, tackle the climate crisis & deliver a just transition for Hackney
I’m delighted to announce
@HackneyCouncil
’s new plan to reduce traffic and pollution. This includes:
🌿 8 new Low Traffic Neighbourhoods
🚸 Reaching 60 School Streets including secondary schools
🚲 4,000 secure bike parking spaces
🚘 Reducing main road traffic
… 1/2
Thanks to everyone who just said hello on Church Street, gd to see so many people out & about shopping locally & to see the preparations for tomorrow's go live for the new bus gate & low traffic neighbourhood. It sits alongside other local changes inc. new cargo bike hire scheme.
🌿 From tomorrow, a cleaner, greener and safer Church Street will become a reality as its new low traffic neighbourhood launches.
☀️ Improving air quality

Did a quick visit to my third

. We really appreciate the funding support from
@MayorofLondon
& will continue to invest in more Council homes
This afternoon
@PhilipGlanville
gave me a tour of some of
@hackneycouncil
’s new build council homes. I tweet a lot about the quality of new build council housing, and these really were of exceptional quality. The communal areas, foyers and entrances are particularly grand.
Maybe my favourite tweet ever, especially given Hackney is and always will be the exact opposite to 'corporate'. Will always defend a Spoons , perhaps the most diverse and inclusive pubs in Hackney.
Did you know Hackney has:
🤸♀️ 7 Adventure Playgrounds
🏀 13 Basketball Courts & many more MUGAs
🛹🚴♂️3 BMX & Skateparks
💐 7 Parklets
🏏 7 Cricket Pitches
🚰 21 free drinking fountains
More than 8 outdoor gyms 🏋️♀️
🤸🏿♀️76 playgrounds
And so much more...
I know residents, especially our Muslim communities, will be feeling anxious following on from the heartbreaking attack in Christchurch, NZ. I want them to know that Hackney will always be

@OwenJones84
@hackneycouncil
Thanks Owen & Jordan, I've emailed both Ms Thompson's children who are my contacts when trying to help in the past. I've also raised this with Director of Housing. While I'm told lift is back on, after a 3hr outage y'day, this constant disruption is unacceptable & we must fix it.
Today, joined Hackney residents,
@HackneyAbbott
, campaigners, activists, & councillors to protest outside
@MuseumoftheHome
as it reopens today. What should've been a joyful day, is deeply soured by the failure of Trustees to listen to the community & take down the Geffrye Statue.
Our

Thank you to

rubbish collections teams - still out there working hard to take away our rubbish / recycling / food waste which is piling up very quickly!

Thanks to all those in the Council,
@MPSHackney
& residents of the local area who have worked with us to support this temporary injunction to ban the consumption of alcohol in London Fields. This decision hasn't been taken lightly, but will ensure the Park is there for everyone.
London Fields isn’t a festival site - it’s for everyone in the community
After weeks of excessive amounts of littering, urination and defecation in the local area, we’re seeking an injunction to temporarily ban the consumption of alcohol in the park

The car still has a role to play in cities, but it will need to be a very different one to now. They needed to be greener, fewer privately owned, take up less space while moving & parked - a much smaller total 'car'print!
Car clubs have & could play a role in getting us there.
The car club sector has the potential to be an important mode of sustainable transport in London.
New CLADS framework could be the answer to providing and sharing data on how we achieve this greener option for London's roads.
Read more here:
Hackney has been clear we don't cooperate with the Home Office under existing rules without the explicit consent of a rough sleeper, we continue to support those NRPF where we can, campaign against the Hostile Environment & will not cooperate with these harmful new rules.
City Hall will not collaborate with draconian new rules that allow people to be deported for being homeless. We have told our partners that they must not share information about rough sleepers on our CHAIN database with the Home Office.
It's cold out, but it's starting to feel a lot like Christmas in Hackney Town Hall Square. Here is the🎄with our Hanukkah Menorah 🕎 & more surprises to follow.
Long week, not been easy, but leaving the Town Hall tonight by saying thank you. I said thank you this week at Council & Cabinet to all the incredible staff supporting our Covid efforts & responding to the cyberattack, but this is for
@hackneycouncil
parks team who do so much.
Very pleased on the eve of
#WalktoSchoolWeek
that letters are going out to residents in the north of Hackney to announce the launch of six new school streets in June at:
Sir Thomas Abney PS
Holmleigh PS
Springfield PS
Woodberry Down PS/Skinners Academy
Jubilee PS
Simon Marks PS.
We started with 5, then 9, then 12 and now 41 school streets operate across Hackney with more on the way.
They're working 🚸🏫👨👩👧👧👩👦👩👧👧🌳🌲
Proud to have worked with
@FeryalClark
&
@jonburkeUK
in helping with Hackney civic society & schools to kick start a Londonwide movement.
School Streets are working:
🟢 Closing roads around schools to traffic at pick-up and drop-off times has reduced polluting nitrogen dioxide levels by up to 23%.
🟢 18% of parents are driving to school less during the pandemic, helping to clean up London's air.
I have just spoken to
@BBCNews
about last night's event in Hackney. This builds on conversations I had earlier today with our
@MPSHackney
BCU Commander & our public health team. I am angry and saddened that events like this are even thought about nevermind organised & attended.
Huge congratulations to the whole team at
@NHSHomerton
they've served Hackney so well through this crisis. It's brilliant to hear that
@CareQualityComm
recognise that our wonderful local hospital is Outstanding. All part of a local health & care partnership that is simply amazing
Also saw inside the new Britannia, by the time we finally exit lockdown in June it will be ready to fully open.
Let's start with the new pools, lane swimming for the first time & fully accessible.
🏊🏾♂️ the main six-lane 25m lane swimming pool, spectator seating movable floor!
During my Britannia site visit on Friday it was good to see the new BRAFA Public Square taking shape, a brand new public space named after our forgotten recent past. It will set off the new leisure centre & entrance to Shoreditch Park as well as including some incredible designs.
Get home to find an amazing
@hackneycouncil
tree officer walking my road, he's been surveying the area & been a critical part of the team who has delivered 400+ street trees in past few months all across Hackney. Another capeless hero, also helping to coordinate watering prog.
Excited to see this taking shape on my way to work today, for too long Hackney & London Fields have been used as a rat run from the centre of London to the A12 and points east. Our new low traffic neighbourhood stops this, while maintaining access for 🚌🚓🚨🚑🚒& local residents.
🌿 We’re creating quieter, safer streets in the London Fields area.
This is part of our plans to rebuild a greener Hackney after the pandemic, supporting people to walk, shop and cycle as public transport capacity remains low.
Beautiful and apt as on 20th January
@hackneycouncil
's Cabinet will be asked to approve the first stages of the £4.5m investment in fully restoring this incredible building and ensuring the future of this vital public library serving the people of Stoke Newington & Hackney.
The original entrance to the public library. Note traces of camouflage paint from WW2. The original library building was built in 1892. It was extended along Edward’s Lane in 1904. The WW1 Memorial Hall was built in 1923. A reference library extension was added in 1937.

One of the most ambitious borough led plans to tackle air pollution, meet our climate targets, reduce private car dominance, promote active travel & deliver people friendly places across all parts of Hackney. Focusing specifically on some of most deprived communities in Hackney.
A low traffic Hackney is at the heart of our vision for a greener, healthier borough.

More details to come, but great to see
@willnorman
championing more investment in one of the more hidden barriers to cycling - bike parking, storage & security. Hackney already has largest network in London, but still not enough, so pleased from this & other progs we'll see £200k
With more people cycling, we need more bike parking. That's we're announcing more than £1million of new funding to create up to 2,000 much-needed new cycle parking spaces across the capital.

It's clear we need Govt to publish the data & methodology for inclusion as Appendix A local authorities. On positivity, incidence rate, number of cases, pressure on NHS, & local prevalence amongst yng people, Hackney should be on this list, working w/ colleagues to make the case.
Can only echo this concern, ldrs from across London are united on the need for clarity & still nothing official from Govt to Councils beyond this guidance which excludes Hackney: .
When I &
@AnntoinetteBra1
wrote to the PM before Xmas we feared this chaos.
I want to be even clearer, it is a beautiful Sunday; & I know many people in Hackney live in cramped conditions with no access to private outside space, but social distancing must be respected & people should only be going out for short periods & then go home. Lives depend on it.
I come back to this: social distancing applies in parks, markets, shops, supermarkets, queuing for anything you are taking away and walking. It is up to everyone to follow this advice, alongside only going out if they need to.
