This kind of data makes it hard not to wonder whether taxpayers are getting the best value for their money and whether enough is being done to drive down costs in the public sector before services are cut or taxes risen

The data also reveal other public sector bodies aren't getting good deals The Met, for example, paid 28% more for power and 43% more for gas than Greater Manchester Police The Met would've saved £6.8m if it'd bought at the same rates, enough for 100 extra bobbies on the beat

The data, which was obtained from more than 400 FOI requests, reveals some councils are paying two and a half times more than others for their energy 🤯 If you want to find out whether your local council is getting a good deal on energy, use the search tool in the article

Councils could've saved nearly £2bn on their energy bills over three years if they'd all bought at the cheapest rates available For context, local authority's collective shortfall on social care funding was £586m last year My exclusive today and short🧵 https://t.co/GcQ7kcYK6W

A key quote is that even if wholesale price went to zero, electricity prices could still end up rising in the UK. What I don't completely understand, looking at international comparisons, is the mirror of that. Even if fixed costs were zero, we still wouldn't be as cheap as US
An absolute must watch. Energy bosses have just told Parliament that EVEN IF gas prices halved by 2030, the soaring policy costs of renewables would mean bills go UP. Ed Miliband’s plan means more grid, more expensive renewable subsidies, more paying wind farms to turn off.

This is the first season since 1935-36 - 90 years ago - that the Manchester United first team hasn't included a player who played at some point under either Sir Matt Busby or Sir Alex Ferguson.

Anyway, given the company clearly doesn't want anyone knowing what's been going on behind closed doors, it'd be shame if anyone else read the story! https://t.co/BykrMSE90r

Whatever you think of the trans issue, my article was impeccably-sourced and balanced and there was a clear public interest in exposing how Bloomsbury (and many other publishers) behave towards authors who express views they consider "incorrect"

Bloomsbury seems to have forgotten publishers should enlighten, expose and raise debate not try to suppress it. It was depressing enough that it dropped the book in the first place but even worse that it doubled down by launching an ill-fated assault against my journalism

Defending this case has taken considerable time and effort and is part of the unseen work that journalists have to do all the time to stop big companies from silencing scrutiny
