Commuter station gone contactless? Expect changes to match the Tfl system from Dft: New peak times 0630-0930 AND peak 1600-1900. Uses time of "touch in". Super off peak scrapped. BUT off peak lowered slightly. Winners and losers - suspect will be the model for others.

Affects 50 stations inc those on Great Northern, Chiltern, Great Anglia, Thameslink. Some will benefit others won’t. And can’t use rail cards on contactless …….. still work to be done I think.

'Tap in system a back door fare rise' - a consequence of rolling out contactless at 50 new stations is some fares will increase. Off peak starts at 0930 BUT peak comes back in 4-7pm as system aligns with Tfl timings. Also super off peak at weekends gone…

The difference being it is a Labour Mayor and Labour Govt and (publicly at least) the Mayor says this is a fair deal for London. The days of Govt handing over big capital budgets for projects without conditions are long gone. (If there was any doubt)

An interesting aside is the previous Tory Government were criticised for attaching strings to funding deals during the pandemic and eroding Mayoral powers. Well that is what has happened here again with 5.8% fare increase a condition of £2.8bn capital spending…..

Good to speak to @BBCRadioLondon about TfL’s fare increases. Unclear where the money is coming from for the bus fare freeze but if you use the Tfl rail network a lot in a day the travelcard cap freeze will also help. (I think it kicks in at 2.4 journeys?) 1/2
