Here's an updated calendar of what I believe are the 150+ best screenwriting fellowships, labs, scholarships, contests, and other opportunities for screenwriters all over the world.
@zoramag
Commuting to workplaces every day for jobs that can just as easily be done from home. People can just come in once a week, or every other week, and offices can be designed for that.
@NeilJYoung17
And clearly Mary and Joseph were negligent for taking a newborn baby from Bethlehem to Egypt on a DONKEY. I mean, what WERE they thinking? Responsible parents would have stayed put and let their kid be slaughtered by Herod.
@JessicaValenti
Not to mention parental leave that's funded by the government and not up to individual employers!
And university tuition that doesn't put you in debt for 10 years.
I'm applying for the Disney
#screenwriting
program, so I looked up the past participants.
These writers ALREADY have impressive resumes. Why do they NEED to go through a "training" program even to be considered for staff jobs?
Why not just... HIRE THEM?
Here's a 2023 calendar of the 115+ best
#screenwriting
fellowships, labs, scholarships, contests, internships, and other opportunities for
#screenwriters
all over the world.
32 are new to the list this year.
About 61% are free to enter.
@zoramag
About 37% of US jobs can be done at home.
This would be better for workers, families, traffic, health, the environment, AND EMPLOYERS.
People go to offices because managers confuse butts in chairs with productivity.
$900,000 buys about 8 original screenplays at WGA minimum, any one of which could launch a new franchise.
Or it pays for one person to try to develop an AI that will generate scripts that can't be protected by copyright.
Here's my 2022 calendar of
#screenwriting
fellowships, labs, contests, grants and other opportunities.
There are more than 100 for
#screenwriters
all over the world.
@AstroKatie
Probably not libel, but seems VERY likely 1) a tortious violation of the right of publicity and 2) a violation of FTC false endorsement rules.
Every one of those people should be contacting their lawyers and the FTC.
This could bring down Twitter.
@WorksWithWords
And ladies! I figured out how to thread my new (used) sewing machine from an Arabic-speaking woman on YouTube. I have no idea what she was saying, but the video was very clear.
@chandshru09
The unions are just asking for about 2% of profits (NOT revenues) shared between 200k people — less than about 12 top studio execs are paid.
@EricLiptonNYT
Major companies CAN control their brand identities using the DMCA and trademark infringement lawsuits...
"Pay us or we'll violate your IP rights" isn't a great marketing strategy.
Also,
#RICO
?
X might have anticipated this if they didn't fire all their lawyers....
Oh, wow.. Allegheny County Jail has decided to ban books so that the county may monetize reading by restricting it to tablets that they charge by minute to use.
Isn’t capitalism wonderful! 😃😒
Artificial intelligence found more breast cancers than doctors with years of training and experience and cut doctors’ mammogram reading workload almost in half, a new early-stage study found
If any
#DGA
members are on the fence about the new contract, just ask any business lawyer to read it and see how loudly they laugh.
Don’t be a freier.
#WGAStrong
My list of
#screenwriting
fellowships, labs, contests, grants, etc. has been updated for 2020!
Now with almost 80 opportunities for
#screenwriters
from all over the world!
Here's my 2021 calendar of
#screenwriting
fellowships, labs, contests, grants and other opportunities.
I added about 20 new ones this year, so there are now about 100 for
#screenwriters
all over the world.
@moby_dickhead
Talk to an entertainment litigator and file suit for copyright infringement.
You'll need to register the copyright for your work before you sue, but this is easy and cheap.
And you probably won't ever have to go to court, since this is so blatant they SHOULD settle.
@franklinleonard
Built my garden beds out of scrap lumber and bought seeds and seedlings for them. The garden gives me something to nurture, it changes every day, and I’m already harvesting tomatoes and herbs.
@writergeekrhw
'Indeed Humphrey Bogart is reputed to have said: "If I ever have exposition to say, I pray to God that in the back of the shot they've got two camels fucking."'
“The Haunted Mansion” earned $3.1 million in Thursday previews and is expected to gross $25-$30 million in its opening weekend. The film carries an oversized price tag of $150 million.
@zoramag
Remote workers are MORE PRODUCTIVE.
They get sick less because they're less exposed to germs, and they can work through minor illnesses without exposing others.
Working at home reduces staff turnover, thus retaining corporate know-how and saving $.
@jaybeware
@WakeRevolt
They’re mostly TOURISTS who have been on vacation in Israel!
This is the end of the high holiday season and the airport would look much like this in any case.
Many flights have been cancelled, making things worse.
@benji_smith
@ZachRoseWriter
Dude, you are about to get so sued by so many people. I hope your lawyer has explained the concept of statutory and treble damages to you.
I don’t get why the AMPTP is pushing back so hard.
Writers are a small part of a show’s budget, and if you don’t keep training new writers you don’t get new shows.
Burning out valuable show runners is stupid.
It’s like they don’t understand the concept of seed corn.
@writergeekrhw
Camel-humping scene. Boring exposition with camels (etc.) getting it on in the background. E.g., Littlefinger + lesbians. Attributed to Humphrey Bogart, I believe.
Christopher Nolan has had discussions with several major studios about his next film, revolving around J. Robert Oppenheimer and his involvement developing the atom bomb during World War II.
IMHO, if you’re good enough to beat out thousands of other applicants to win a coveted fellowship, you don’t need more “training.” You’re already good enough to be staffed on a show.
"…When someone presents a problem to you of like there aren’t enough people of color at your network or whatever and your solution is a training program, what you’re saying is you assume that those people need training. You’re assuming that they’re less than."
@jed_mercurio
@British_Airways
Can you have your seat changed so they're not breathing on you?
You could ask them directly to cover up, or ask the flight attendant to convey your concern to the pilot.
If the crew STILL won't act, ask for a complaint form and get ALL the crew names
Make a stink/save lives
@TheRaDR
Hello, I'm a litigator in a movie. I do my research in big, fat legal books, late at night in an oak-paneled library, because if I was just staring at Westlaw on my computer you wouldn't be able to tell I was a lawyer.
Studio execs have actually said that they want their workers -- who make all the entertainment and who are thus responsible for all the profits -- to become homeless.
That doesn't make for a good-faith negotiation...
@MsEmilyEdwards
The only “problem” it solves is the need to pay creators for their creations. It makes corporations think they can “generate content” for next to free and that it will be just as good at making money as human content. However, AI content can’t be copyrighted — so it’s not IP.
"They had the exact same training I do. And I would watch as our white friends would get a staff writer job and our friends of color would get a diversity program."
A reminder of why 90% of
#screenwriting
contests aren't worth entering.
They hire readers off Craigslist for $10/script.
Someone want to respond to the ad and out this contest?
I just did the math.
Having 6 writers per show would cost AMPTP about 8/10th of one percent of an episode’s budget.
It would help prevent show-runner burnout, produce better shows, and train the next generation of writers.
So why isn’t this a no-brainer?
#WGAStrong
The WGA proposed that TV shows should hire a minimum of six to 12 writers, but some writers disagree.
“Nobody asked for this,” said one prominent showrunner. “Every showrunner I know is against this. It doesn’t make sense to anybody.”
I hate
#screenwriting
fellowship questions like this:
"Please tell us briefly (no more than 100 words) why YOU wrote THIS story?"
Why does there have to be a why? I wrote it because I wanted to write it, because it was cool, or fun, or interesting, or whatever.
There should be no unpaid tests in any creative field. If they can't tell if you've got it from looking at your resume and samples, they don't know what they're looking for and are probably wasting your time... or exploiting your free labor.
Pfft, not this studio asking me to do an *unpaid* animation test thats meant to take 12-24 HOURS when they don’t even wanna give me rates when I asked for them directly.
Peeps fighting for
#NewDeal4Animation
please keep reasonable and PAID tests as part of your demands✊🏼
Most “schemes” assume applicants (often women and PoC) need “help” to “get better” before they deserve to be hired.
Anyone who can get into these highly competitive schemes is already ready for a real job.
Schemes don't work. They don't create systemic change.
Netflix got all the clout of engaging with UK creatives but no-one got their show made.
Not good enough.
@LaraCrabb
I know, isn't empathy and responsibility terrible?
It would be so much better if more people died, right?
And if we can crash the economy while we're at it, so much the better!
@aadip
Holy shit. I had someone try to bribe me to put their contest on my list, but I’ve never been attacked like that. It would be great if you felt comfortable exposing them. No one wants to give money to people like that

@ashleyn1cole
discussed the issue on Scriptnotes:
"I applied for all the diversity programs. I didn’t get in. And then I got a job on television. And a lot of my friends who were doing these programs were with me at the Second City."
@LilLunaSunset
@zoramag
I'm not suggesting that no one should work from an office, if that's where they prefer and are most productive.
The point is to be smarter and less rigid about where people work.
@jhan2qt
@pmiscove
No, the Copyright Office has made clear that you can only claim copyright in what’s written by humans. Having a human make minor edits in AI work doesn’t make the whole thing copyrightable.
@camillard
There was a guy on Reddit who quit his job as an accountant so he could be a screenwriter, but he hadn’t actually written anything yet, and was asking other people for ideas on what to write… 🙄
Vindolanda tablet 892: Masclus the decurion writes to the prefect Verecundus requesting leave for five auxiliaries: Lituccus, Victor, Augustanus, Cusius and Bellicus. He also asks for his knife back and reports he has enclosed some plant cuttings with the letter. (85-92 AD)

@zoramag
People can't expect productivity during a pandemic, with kids at home, etc. to be the same as working at home in a more normal environment.
