. Thank you,
@causalinf
. So much fun and informative stuff. It's indeed helpful to answer my R2's question. Look forward to the round 2 workshop.
The institute of Economics at Academia Sinica has established a pre-doc fellow program this year to support students who are considering pursuing a Ph.D. in economics. Many RA positions are available. Come work with us!
National Taipei University is hiring--we have more than one AP positions. Preferred fields are Microeconomic Theory, Empirical Industrial Economics, Applied Econometrics, and International Economics. Apply and be my colleague! Deadline is November 30.
My short paper with
@JohnChungEnLiu
"Who Wears a Mask? Gender Differences in Risk Behaviors in the COVID-19 Early Days in Taiwan" is accepted at Economics Bulletin. We find that compared to men (48%), women (64%) are 16% more likely to wear masks. (1/5)
Our 2023-2024 econ predoc program conclusion lunch and welcome party for the new predocs.
If you are interested in working with professors at our institute (or me), feel free to apply. I am hiring part-time, full-time, or postdoc RAs.
To combat fake/bad news, I asked students to write an "editorial style" paper with good research in my public econ class. My student's work just got published in a very prominent Taiwanese online news media! Feel free to steal this teaching idea.
Finally done with my (corner) office decoration. Thanks to Institute of Economics at Academia Sinica for providing such a great and cozy work environment.
We are hiring! Academia Sinica is Taiwan’s National Academy, and is among the top econ academic institutions in Taiwan. We have 31 economists from all fields. Awesome colleagues. Generous research support. Internationals are welcome!
Very honored to win the university-level teaching award again--this time with monetary bonus! I am grateful to have wonderful students at NTPU and super helpful TAs. Cheers to the best New Year gift.
It's great to be back to Taylor Hall with the whole family. My first baby listened to many seminars in this building when she was in my belly!
Hey friends, I am doing my sabbatical for a semester at AAE, UW-Madison. Let's have fun and be productive!! 😀
@pam_meyerhofer
Read this summary for all approaches and discussion. This DID literature has evolveda lot. There was also a Part II. So far I find the sensitivity analysis by Rambachan and Roth (2021) quite useful to go beyond only testing!
I just signed an appointment letter to co-advise a PhD student with
@wekwa_Mishi
at Nelson Mandela University in South Africa. It's my great pleasure to train more economists in developing countries as a development economist.
Finally, my exchange PhD student from Czech Republic has arrived. Bravos to our international office at NTPU. This visa has turned out to be to twice as tricky because of Covid.
My student travelled far to my 三峽 office to take a photo because I was't able to go to their graduation ceremony. She is as energetic as usual, talking about her upcoming job. This is her signature pose when she did cheerleading competition in her freshman. Congratulations!
Krugman's comment on how American was the worst in responding to cronavirus--weak social safety net, health system, etc.
My response: We should not forget an important case in this graph. Taiwan can help! I put back Taiwan in the graph! (cannot find HK in this Database though)
America's response to the coronavirus is the worst in the world, which is shocking and has a lot to do with a leader who is completely unfit, temperamentally and intellectually, for the job 1/
My teaching skill reached to the next level. My end-of-year class party 2.0 this year is a combination of "escape the campus"+ a regular party. Students need to solve 7 questions from 7 buildings on campus, and they get the key to enter the indoor party room.
My research partner

Academia Sinica is Taiwan’s National Academy, and is among the top econ academic institutions in Taiwan. I look forward to working with brilliant colleagues there.
Thanks

for bringing the UMD turtle to complete my office collection. Where I have studied or worked from L to R: Maryland-College Park, Yale, Wisconsin-Madison, Holy Cross, OXY, UCLA, National Taipei U. I guess I still love Wisconsin Badger the best.
ESA Africa 2023 @ Cape Town, South Africa: Pre-conference reception, followed by a night market tour. The city is so laid back and the weather is amazing. Thanks to Academia Sinica and Taiwanese government's grant support!

Guanming's visit made my December warmer. She said "The weather is totally fine. Not cold at all." Exactly! My cold tolerance was built up in Wisconsin.
We chatted about students' market, my favorite Laura, and department's old and new profs. Proud of being

Our Institute of Economics, Academia Sinica is hosting the 2023 Taiwan Economics Research (August 8-10).
Come present or participate! Deadline is May 15. Taiwanese-related scholars are especially welcome. Some travel grants are available.
I organized a field trip to visit the solar panel site in 鷺江 elementary school for my environmental economics class. This solar panel farm was built by a cooperative called 庶民發電合作社. Thanks for hosting us!
It's great to attend
@Econ_4_Everyone
's virtual keynote speech and ask him about how to scale up RCTs in Taiwan. I also got the new book--The Votage Effect. Have read it and recommend those who care about a scalable RCT! Here are also some new papers for my own note.
Happy 2023! We did a grand party for my last Public Econ class--even students from my 1st/2nd year came. We viewed students' "trailer video" for their final project. We had a research presentation marathon from my Czech exchange student, NTHU PhD student, and my undergrad RA.
I used Gather Town to host a virtual final class party at my Public Econ class. I put so many extra glasses of wine in the party since it may be the only chance that I can treat students wine in a class. Bravo! It was a huge success, and I am so proud of my creativity.
I am glad to see today that National Taipei University is joining my alma mater Tunghai University in offering scholarships for Ukrainians who want to come study here. We can get through the hard times together.

Masks are universally embraced in Taiwan. In the Taiwan Social Change Survey, 90% people said that they would wear masks in a pandemic. Thus, we are confident that we're measuring gender differences in risk preferences/behaviors. (4/5)
@femonomics
🤚🏼I was when I was on the job market year. Cannot imagine attending AEA with this risk. But cannot imagine not attending that year of AEA as well.
Really wise words from
@sndurlauf
. Economists should be more open-minded learning from other disciplines. I had fond memories taking classes and social network study group with him in Madison.

An amazing *randomized trial* on Twitter+academia:

Just to be clear. Taiwanese people have their own passport! It is ironic that an institution promoting freedom, equality, and inclusion now excludes people from using their own citizenship.
Interesting read from a Standford Econ PhD regarding her journey into the profession. It reminds me of mine, especially the part that I had the RA and visiting student (I was at Yale and she at Harvard). Apparently I did not know the playbook.

Well deserved! Dan is my committee member who opened up my career in Environmental Economics. He is a magnificent scholar who cares too much about students! Why too much? When I TAed for him, he even came to my session to demonstrate cap and trade games, which I still use now.
🏆 Congratulations to our 2022 AERE Fellows Elena Irwin and Daniel J. Phaneuf! 🏆
Elena and Daniel have each made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the profession of environmental and resource economics.

A good reminder. Graduate students thought that the most difficult part in their dissertation is geting a good idea, then modeling and analyzing. But writing is no less than that, especially for non-native speakers.
**the active reading thread embedded is also useful.
Well! Working at the Bank was my dream after my UMD MPP degree until I found that Taiwan is not a member country. I decided to get my own PhD so that I can do any development work/research not being limited by my country status. It turns out that I am right.
Endless referee reporting. I have 3 due in two weeks. Can the usefulness of my report correlate with the usefulness of the report I will receive? I know that there is a thing called Karma but it doesn't seem to be well designed.

2015 econ job market, an interview for a a postdoc position with a renowned economist, I was asked "how much stress can you deal with?", "How many hours non-stop can you work, or have ever worked?" "How many holidays do you really have to take?" I did not get this job.
I worked basically non-stop every day of the week, from the moment I woke up (first thing I did was checking my email) to the moment I went to bed. No work/life balance, no separation of personal and professional lives. Gender issues were also perceived. 4/19

Great resource collection: from podcast, early career advice, lit review thread from Twitter (there is even gender bias in economics which I should have seen earlier), to all kinds of great advice.
The protective behaviors, however, decrease significantly when people are in groups. The lowest percentages are observed among parents with their children(!). There are no differences among boys and girls. (2/5)
