Peds ICU is full in Oregon. Please SIGN to tell Governor Brown to use masks, tests, and other measures to STOP the spread. Crisis standards of care are dangerous to patients and cause HC worker burnout.
@kenicemobley
Years ago, when I was trying to get pregnant, I went to the supermarket to grab a test. It was behind a lock, and I remember the woman who sold it to me said she hoped I got the result I wanted. I thought that was so nice and it stuck with me.
My friend wrote to the director of our small forest pre-school where they canceled 3 days this week b/c of staff illness. 5 parent pairs signed. We asked to reinstate masks and the response was positive! She said she and the teachers realized they stopped masking & are all sick
@thedanrosen
I used to teach Jewish history and my non-Jewish students were always surprised that it wasn't "just" the holocaust. An expulsion/pogrom etc. happened pretty regularly for 2K years.
My dream: Principal greets every student outside with golden retriever Covid sniffer and a big smile. Kids go into classrooms with 8 air changes per hour and HEPA. Fewer absences, better focus. We could do this. It would actually cost less
@roarkka
@AShihipar
@JohnMFaught
But children under 5 aren't eligible for the vaccine. And kids under 2 can't even mask. They don't make N95s small enough for under 5s. They talk like everyone can get those two shots, but they can't. Mass infection of children doesn't get the scrutiny that the vaccine does.
I'm not sure what the final policy will be, but it looks like masks are coming back! We also asked her to sanitize toys and hands since she really wasn't. I am good with mud. Love a rich microbiome. Not good with Flu, mono, RSV from other kid's mouths!

My dad is a sociologist and when I took Soc as a first year, I sent him my paper to read at 11 or 12 at night (it was earlier where they live). My mom was so excited that I had an emergency that required a sociologist. No one ever had before, you know.
@jfitzgeraldMD
We barely talk about the cool stuff! We grow a whole ORGAN! We have a 50% increase in blood volume! Not that its comfortable, and I nearly died with my first (HELPP & Pre-ecclampsia). We are a society in deep denial of pregnancy & birth in all their glory, ugliness, pain.
@bessbell
Except the ones attending fully outdoor forest school! And the ones masking! Or both. And all that digging in dirt is fantastic for her immune system. She loves it! We don't have to hotbox viruses.
@dthompsonada
@alexmeshkin
All the under 5 vax early adopters I know still plan to mask indoors & avoid indoor dining. Our plans are feeling safe sending our children to school and finally going to the dentist, getting a masked haircut. We might do more masked indoor outings than we feel safe doing now.
We have this at the Fortune 500 co where I work. Conf. rooms in use have CO2 levels around 500 ppm. Why don't we have this in every classroom in the world? Schools drive 70% of transmission and ventilation can reduce infections 80%. Result: better health, learning, attendance
Sensors in these state-of-the-art buildings report the levels of outdoor air pollution and carbon dioxide on each floor. The less carbon dioxide, the better the ventilation.
@The_Law_Boy
@tressiemcphd
Right wingers have disproportionate political power because of how the system is stacked in their favor (the Senate, rural over-representation, gerrymandering, etc.) but what they really want is cultural power, to be cool, and they just aren't. It infuriates them.
Husband's great aunt pearl clutching over how we moved my 3 yo to forest school from her indoor preschool. "You just weren't ready to move on [from Covid] yet." Its a virus, ignoring it doesn't make it go away. Quite the contrary. To move on, control the virus!
@lisa_iannattone
Where are the air quality standards? Not everyone will mask perfectly, not everyone can ie. <2s, so we need OSHA standards that mandate enough air changes, filtration, UV, that you can have a cup of tea at your desk for 10 min or take a 1 yo to the grocery store without infection
@amyisquitebusy
@carlyhcooper
So much easier and cheaper to call us superwomen than provide paid leave, sick time for us and our kids, flex time, preschool, longer school day/shorter work day, etc.
@doxxmedaddy
@sheabutterfemme
This isn't online learning. This is emergency remote instruction. Students and teachers didn't sign up for this. And people are traumatized and scared. Online learning can be great if people choose it and know how to do it well. Just lecturing online doesn't work.
@IllCaesar
@AudleyZDarke
@mvbrat91
Also an issue in restaurants. You'd think we would enforce these worker protections out of self-interest if nothing else.
@luckytran
Mask mandates would also protect babies under 2 who are too young to mask & children who do so imperfectly for whom 1 way masking doesn't work. With Peds ICUs full before the holidays, in the midst of the worst ped health crisis in 30 years, masking MATTERS.
@TheRaDR
My 6 week old's passport just arrived. I was so relieved. A non-Jewish friend asked why get her one - we aren't planning any trips. I said what if we have to leave quick? Under a diff president I might have waited a year or 2. Not now.
I'm looking for a practice that'll keep masking, not only to keep my family safe, but also because I am looking for medical pros, who I can trust to be 1) well informed about medical studies, 2) have good judgement, and 3) have good intentions. At least 1/3 is missing if unmasked
@AmyAchenbach
Dude, and what if it is EVERY profession? And what if those wives actually had lower paid women, often woc, to do the harder work for them? What if we are each trying to do the work of _more_ than 2 people?
Worth mentioning lot's of people don't even need Long Covid to find this out. Just being Covid cautious will often yield the same result. You find out who values time with you enough to meet you masked or outdoors, who's willing to test, who cares about you vs. brunch with you
@eatonhamilton
There is a room level version of this in development that checks air in a room for Covid and other viruses every 5 minutes and alerts if viruses are detected. What it doesn't do is pinpoint it to an individual.
@JeromeAdamsMD
If there are 3 kinder classes at my kid's school & half the parents want their kid to mask (based on PTA facebook survey) parents should be able to opt into a masked class. A great natural experiment to see which classes have more spread, absences.
@AShihipar
Kids got 99 problems, but the mask ain't one. My 5 yo fell asleep in hers yesterday. She was clearly comfy! And my 2 yo learned how to see who was smiling with their eyes. Her language and social devt is Amazing. 200K kids losing caregivers is a prob, poverty, climate, not masks.
Thank God pfizer finally got their data in. Since that seems to be the only one the FDA wants to approve for reasons that are not clear, I was really frightened they wouldn't submit at all. Curious how their numbers hold up. Frustrated FDA couldn't have approved Moderna by now
@growthesunshine
@v_solesmith
That's what my 2 yr old said. As a child I remember thinking my mom was so beautiful. So sad that part of growing up for most kids is learning their moms don't feel beautiful and that society says 1.most moms aren't and 2.for wm beauty=worth.
@amandalhu
I really think in 20-50 years people are going to look at the "we have to build up immunity" to viruses and mask-optional hospitals the way we look at doctors not washing their hands.
@WhatComethNow
@Esqueer_
I remember the comment from some pomo gender theorist that no one is in such deep drag as conservatives going to church. Big Gender performance energy here.
In 2021 122 children between 1-4 yos died of Covid. So far in 2022, Covid killed 88 children. At this pace, 2022 will be the deadliest yr of the pandemic for children. Many more babies & toddlers suffer from MIS C and Long Covid.

@dgurdasani1
It has been VERY clear so far in the pandemic that "PH" authorities in the US & UK are unaware & and uninterested in research, treatments, prevention etc. happening _anywhere_ else. The wild ethnocentrism of insisting they are the center of knowledge when they are so WRONG.
@skhndh
Yes! Especially because I've been discriminated against before for being a mom so I try not to tell anyone I have kids until I am hired. I also just found out that mortgage companies see a gap of 6 months as black mark too. Ugh!

My husband has a degree in linguistics w a focus on lang acquisition. This has been thoroughly debunked. My 2 yr old's language is incredible. She speaks in complex sentence more typical of a 4 yo. And her social skills are great. Kids have 99 probs but a mask ain't 1.
@JeromeAdamsMD
I'd add 1) continue to require masks in medical facilities 2) Mask required hours in the mornings & 1 day/wk at grocery & pharmacies, banks, post offices 3) mask required schools/classes ie. parents & teachers should be able to choose the masked kindergarten if they want.
@amandalhu
I think kids need to play in & sometimes eat dirt. They need to meet a range of bacteria for a healthy microbiome. But viruses? Nope. Multiple Schlerosis, Cervical Cancer, Parkinson's, many other diseases are post-viral syndromes & we still know little. Let's not hotbox viruses
@AbraarKaran
And if everyone ELSE on a crowded bus is wearing an N95, then a baby too young to vaccinate or mask is safer. So is a preschooler who can't wear an N95 b/c they don't fit or can't or won't wear a mask perfectly. The spread overall is less, everywhere so schools can stay open etc.
@bessbell
I am the world's least outdoorsy mom. This was not how I planned to do this, but I've become a huge fan. She doesn't get us sick constantly, which is wonderful. The gear is expensive, it is true. And we less overall than our old pre-school, but we get a lot fewer hours.
@sarahradz_
Fully outdoor Forest school for 3 yo (to keep her from hotboxing viruses with other germy kids! It works! She's been so healthy!) is closed today b/c of smoke from the Forest Fires burning for weeks. Hoping she can go Thursday. If it isn't pandemics, its climate change.
@PutrinoLab
@CDCgov
And how many of them are actually in the office? All the higher ups seem to wfh doing interviews in front of very well appointed credibility bookcases.
If
@US_FDA
wants to approve
@pfizer
before
@moderna_tx
, could they dig up the data from December and approve the 6 mos-2 years 2 dose regime? Those are the babies too little for masks. The reason they didn't approve it in December never made much sense.
@lisa_iannattone
@BlakeMMurdoch
Got lucky - my boss said CR boxes were too loud, but then showed me the building-wide system of CO2 monitoring that's rarely above 550 ppm & the MERV 13-16 filters. They invested in iaq in 2020 to reopen the international training center. Sharing b/c its possible!
@JolentaG
@beansprouts_mom
I'm not IC so I may be willing to take risks you can't. But I am high risk, 42, mom of 2. I just N95 mask indoors always & expect to potentially forever. I go places and see people, just not indoors unmasked. I still go out and still see friends etc. I just don't eat indoors.
@scott_squires
@LASchools
My take is the key was getting 5 families to sign on. It is a small school, maybe 15 families including kids who only come 2 days/wk. I think you'd need to get a critical mass within a school on board.
@FDADeviceInfo
@US_FDA
So are there any PCR tests left that are expected to be accurate? At the current rate of transmission (which gives the virus so many chances to mutate!) how long are the remaining PCRs supposed to work? What's the plan? And will anyone be developing more accurate PCRs and RATs?
Reminds me of my ABC news interview where reporter commented "so you are still living in the pandemic?" We are all living in the pandemic. Vax & relax speeds variant evolution. This is the worlds worst group project!
@AppStore
@noom
This is such BS. Noom is a diet, not a rejection of diets. If you want that, you do you. If you want to live free of diet culture, look into Health At Every Size HAES.
When I was interviewed by ABC news about
#ImmunizeUnder5s
, one comment the interviewer made stuck with me. "So you're still living IN the pandemic?" I said we are all living IN the pandemic. It isn't a state of mind. Cases are as high as ever. Hospitals are full. It ain't over.
@mattbc
Apparently a vaccine for under 5s that has proven safe has to pass through many regulatory hurdles, but the current plan of mass infecting young children doesn't require the same scrutiny! I am irrate.
@dthompsonada
@alexmeshkin
Most of us have been very careful and are more worried about Long Covid for us and our kids than death or hospitalization. People are planning exciting masked outings like the mall to buy shoes with kids who've never seen an escalator or the inside of store.
@ColinDotNet
I'm an instructional designer. Often I help people move learning online. Emergency remote school is NOT Online learning. 1) Huge trauma happening. Maslow and brain science agree we can't learn unless we feel safe. 2) Hundreds of thousands of children lost a caregiver
@Randall87454048
I believe that masking matters. I believe that getting Covid as few times as you can matters. I believe that keeping up on shots and filtering air help. You may not be able to avoid ever getting it, but getting it once is better than getting it 4 times and masking will help.
@joaquinlife
This was EVERY phone call I made the day Western states approved the first round of Covid shots for under 5s. No one had it. I had to tell a bunch of health departments and peds practices & pharmacies that it had been approved.
@farhip
There are more: Kelly who got the ball rolling on mass detentions then joined a private prison board. I guess he isn't cabinet level, but still.
@meganranney
A smart employer doesn't want sick people coming into work infect all the other employees. Without testing this is a very bad idea. The only way to get our economy working is to beat the virus. Defense production act masks, tests, shots for the world.
@Lollardfish
Yep. I said in 2016 that if he wanted to win he and his Left needed to spend 4 years reaching out to POC and women and listening to them and tamping down on trolls. Instead he supported anti-choice candidates, stayed tone deaf on race and gender, and hasn't reigned in his stans.
@dgurdasani1
And I think the unconscious ethnocentrism of media and citizens is part of what lets them get away with it. So many just assume that if you need an expert, you get the CDC. That of course the most cutting edge research is in the US of maybe the UK.
They should absolutely raise wages. But the story here isn't just that they'd rather allow child labor than pay more. Its that GOP politicians would rather allow child labor than admit that pandemic deaths of lower income workers & Long Covid are causing the labor shortage
Iowa and MN are working on bills to allow children to work in SUPER dangerous work like industrial laundry and meatpacking, and limit liability if kids get hurt or killed.
They’d rather use child labor than improve the jobs and pay to retain adult workers
@IDoTheThinking
I really want someone to design apartments for families with amenities like an art space, playgrounds, a guest suite you can rent for the night, etc.
@EnemyInAState
I don't understand why one airline doesn't step up to be the masked airline and pick up 1/3 of travelers. They'd have fewer cancelled flights and disruptions because they'd have fewer staff out sick. This makes NO sense to me.
@rubin_allergy
Reported for both medical misinfo and targeted harassment (Nazi reference aimed at doctor w. Jewish sounding name). I am so sorry you have to deal with this. I really enjoyed your post about how proud you are of your dad. Thank you both for protecting our babies and toddlers!

@sarit_yael
That would be fascinating- and a school could actually do it if they wanted to. Sadly parental choice only seems to matter for folks choosing NOT to do things. 🤦🏽♂️
This is really important. We tend to talk a lot about consumer safety while ignoring the safety of workers with far greater exposure. It may be that the exhaust standards are correspondingly better making homes more dangerous, but this should be considered!
@Amy_Siskind
And now with the EO, unemployed people like my husband and me have no idea what we will get or for how long. So angry at him for destroying so many lives.
@RutiRegan
My Education Professor started talking really loud and slow when I lost my voice once. I hear fine and my processing speed hadn't changed, I just couldn't talk. I realized that all her words about inclusivity were hollow.
@_megconley
Freelancers deserve FSAs, but 5K is laughable and trying to get your own money back from the FSA middlemen is a huge headache. Scanning documents, phone calls, getting declined. Just like healthcare with insurance. I just want free govt HC and free preschool.
Substitutes are expensive. Kids missing school isn't good for learning outcomes. My kindergarteners reading teacher was out for weeks this year and often there was no one to sub for her so they didn't have reading. And if kids don't learn to read, prison builders use those stats
Do you think an unmasked doctor has been listening to Long Covid patients? If they had really listened to those patients, would they really be unmasking? I don't want that doctor.
@lisa_iannattone
@beansprouts_mom
I'd add that
@FarUVtech
has a lot of United States Dept of Defense and government clients listed on their website. So safe air for them, but not for most of us.
@Jen_Jaw
@roarkka
@AShihipar
@JohnMFaught
I want my kid's pre-school to stay open and case counts to be low enough for them to go. They love school. Mask mandates keep transmission low enough for schools and society to function. It is not just callous, it is dumb. A raging virus is NOT good for the economy.
I went into a Walmart today in my N95 since we ran out of milk. What puzzled me were the people in cloth masks. Most people I saw masking wore surgicals including the few masked workers. I really wished I could give out N95s. Could I? To strangers in less effective masks?
As Covid interacts with other conditions, causing long term problems for many patients, I want a dr who is going to be on the look out for pulmonary embolisms or heart damage etc. after an infection. A doctor who isn't masking may not be reading about longer term risks of Covid
@wrath_776
@julia_doubleday
The minimize, minimize, minimize then say "oh well its too late to do anything" "who could have predicted?" playbook is identical. But my climate change think tank brother thinks I'm crazy. Funny too b/c he's the outdoorsman, but I'm the one who is doing w/o indoor dining.
@Mark_Ungrin
@CassandraNoCov
I am starting to think that doctors need to start being part of cross-functional teams, like engineers are. These silos are incredibly dangerous.

@RobinD444
@vet_dot
@myrabatchelder
The latest strategy in the UK has been "maybe its dogs" no explanation, just some of the children have dogs. Vets don't get it. Israel has been the most straightforward in saying all the cases had Covid 3.5 months before and that is the common denominator.
@drvox
I became a mom in 2016. Oh my! Misogyny and the outrages our society inflicts on mothers. But I love my girls so much and can be in the moment w them + mostly I am too damn tired. I think rage isn't unhealthy so much as suppressing it. Suppressing our rage is what is killing wm.
@1goodtern
Those of us who mask regularly have tried a variety of masks to find what works. I hate that we are 3+ years into this and don't have fit testing widely available to anyone who wants it and subsidized/free masks so ppl can try diff ones to see what fits. I prefer my duck ones.
@Crest
@slpng_giants
Crest, please pull your ads from FOX where Corey Lewandowski just mocked a 10 year old girl with Downs Syndrome ripped from her mother. Is that what you stand for?
@exceptionalfood
5 sets of parents signed the letter, about 1/3 to half the families. I suspect 30% is the threshold to get policies changed. The letter was very nice, kind and clear about what was needed and why. But as I used to say when I did organizing work: speak softy & carry a big list.
@MarkWKlineMD1
Good thing the CDC is thoughtful enough to "recommend" children not be punished for wearing a mask to protect themselves and others. I really think if we are "personal choice"ing a pandemic there needs to be a masked option, ie. masked 2nd grade that parents/teachers can opt into
@RepAdamSchiff
I hope you feel better soon! Please ask the FDA and CDC to approve the vaccine for kids under 5 so I can protect my family too. And if you get paxlovid or evushield, please fight for funding so that people who aren't in congress can get them too.
@dreamoforgonon
Used for the Czar's draft, I suspect? My maternal grandpa's family paid to trade names with another family to avoid the draft. The draft was intended to eradicate Jewish culture, a bit like boarding schools for indigenous Americans.
@Randall87454048
I'll add that I believe every person you don't spread it to matters. And every person they don't spread it to matters. So small things like masking can have a world of impact even if the protection isn't 100%.
@sarahradz_
@Basketlade
Yes. My kids haven't figured out it is the same internet everywhere. My computer has certain things, her fathers diff ones. Even 5 yo still believes there isn't Daniel Tiger on mom's computer. Wonder how long I can maintain that.
@Nicole_Lee_Sch
I learned to never say UTI to drs. I say kidney infection instead. That puts them on the right flow chart to get me blood work (white cell count) in addition to the urine culture. I hate that we have to know all this. And that
@wsbgnl
I work in the semiconductor industry. We can purify air to 100 times cleaner than an operating room to reduce defects on millions of dollars of microchips. PPE is that last solution, after engineering & admin controls. And we learned that doing things at scale makes it cheaper
@AngryBlackLady
59% of people who have abortions are already parents and much of the reason they choose abortion is financial. They can't afford another kid. Anyone who doesn't support paid family leave, universal health care, universal childcare and preschool should not call themselves pro life
@ColinDotNet
3) You know how you kept thinking you were going back to the office soon so it didn't make sense to get the ergonomic home chair? Emergency remote schooling was like that too. People didn't choose it or prepare for it as a long term thing. Teachers weren't really trained for it.
