Hegseth has repeatedly claimed fitness standards have been eased for women to serve in combat roles — but men and women alike in those roles rejected the idea. One woman who served in the 75th Ranger Regiment called the idea “laughable.” When CNN asked to be provided specific

I call it pathetic.
Canada has lost its measles elimination status...a sad milestone. Now is the time to double down on lowering barriers to routine childhood immunizations and ensuring Canadians have access to credible, science-based information. Link: https://t.co/JbALpkKWSW

The BBC got blasted by watchdog orgs during the Israel-Hamas war for having a supposed pro-Israeli bias. I saw no evidence of such, except a careful reliance on verifiable sources. This attack tries to elide this question by focusing on their little-watched Arabic-language branch

It’s appalling the British Prime Minister has not actively stood up for the BBC amid what is transparently not anything like a bias problem but a deeply petty nitpick of its periphery functions by partisan folk appointed by previous governments that hate the broadcaster

Creepy billionaires pursuing a secret plan to see to it that an “aristocracy” of creepy billionaires rules America. What could possibly go wrong. https://t.co/jdNZihdyxY

Chris Buskirk put tech elites in power in Trump’s Washington. His efforts are grounded in a controversial theory: An “aristocracy” is needed to move the country forward.

Ok, good to see: 1. Turning hundreds of 1000s of people already here into citizens is the right priority—the solution to “illegals” is make them legal 2. Doing some of this on top of PR immigration targets gets us into population growth we need https://t.co/36R3aIrish

Here’s that foreign-policy genius everyone’s been talking about
Trump: "For generations Miami has been a haven for those fleeing communist tyranny in South Africa. I mean, if you take a look at what's going on in parts of South Africa. Look at South Africa, what's going on. Look at South America, what's going on. You know, we have a G20

This does point to a fundamental flaw in the U.S. political system: There is no opposition leader, at the executive level, between election years. House and Senate minority leaders can't fulfil this function. So Trump can paint the NYC mayor as the avatar of the Democratic Party

It looks like Mamdani won an actual majority, which, given that Trump is sure to spend the next 3 years branding him as the face and identity of the Democratic Party, at least gives him something Trump has never had

Adjusting to favour PR families with trade experience rather than advanced education would 1) Better match newcomers to economy needs; 2) Improve speed of integration (it took fewer years for immigrants to reach average CDN incomes before we raised education requirements)

A root problem with immigration —using permanent immigrants rather than temporaries to fulfil the "nation-building" goals —is that Canada's main immigration pathways, Express Entry and PNP, select for FAR too high skill/education levels for our economic needs

On climate it’s medium-progressive, though focused mainly on industrial carbon pricing. Immigration is unsustainably low, especially given the huge employment needs the “nation-building” part entails — but it’s ok to lowball it temporarily during economically weak times

A USA translation of Canada’s budget: Carney has decided to be the FDR kind of left-wing (creating economic revival and employing many through big public-funded works) but opposed to the LBJ kind of left-wing (Carney is paring back fed offices with redistributive functions)
