When Man of Steel came out, frankly, most people I saw it with thought it was boring. I was in this theater in Manhattan tonight and the kids were having a blast and they werent even Superman nerds.

And honestly, Superman fighting monsters is fucking boring. I thought it was boring in this movie, too. What would he do if there was a war going on is way more interesting and that was the best part.

Today's audience will find Superman getting involved in wars jarring. But its actually, ironically, Superman's origin. At least in the 1978 film, it starts out by reminding the audience Superman was the product of the 1930s. But adults were actually alive to remember that.

What the movie does well is not only resurrect this anti-war version of Superman for a modern audience, but fits it into his valuation of all lives and challenges the naivete of Jerry and Joe's early Superman when Lois grills him about geopolitics.

Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, kids of Jewish immigrants were mortified by Europe's wars. Superman was their power fantasy in stopping wars in often very naive ways. This version of Supes died when the US entered WW2 and post war he just fought aliens and Lex Luthor, no politics

In Superman's 2nd story he intervenes in a war in fake South American nations (just like this movie) and naively captures the generals and forces them to stop their war. Superman also kidnaps an American munitions CEO and forces him to fight in a war he's sending weapons to.

Superman's been around for 86 years and hes changed a lot. The very first Superman from 1930 that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster made intervened in real-world wars, sometimes in fictional stand-in countries, attacked weapons manufacturers and pro-war U.S. politicians.

Saw Superman and it was good. A few aspects I didn't like but mostly excellent. Unlike Man of Steel I actually want to re-watch it. Superman intervening in a stand-in for Gaza/Ukraine is the most controversial part but it was actually one of the best aspects of the film. (thread).

Unclear why a guy with a clearly German surname whose ancestry at is probably early 1900s at best thinks he can tell a group of people who have collectively been in this nation for longer than its existence and whose citizenship is enshrined in the Constitution where they can go.

Note the passive language here. Whenever Joe Rogan has a schizophrenic temper-tantrum about COVID lockdowns its "Democrats" and "Biden." When Trump runs cover for Epstein or attacks immigrants at Home Depot, it's "they". Always they never the guy in charge he endorsed.
