I write about the targeting of Muslim Americans since 10/7, how it amplifies and extends 9/11 traumas, and how Muslims craft politics and identity in their wake.
I am, to my knowledge, the only Palestinian professor on UChicago's main campus. I woke up to this photo, after three months of being told this university is politically neutral. Never once has this admin asked after my safety or the safety of my students...
I spent the day at the University of Chicago, meeting with President Paul Alivisatos, as well as with Jewish students at Hillel and Chabad.
We have two goals: to further enhance the partnership between
@UChicago
and Israeli research institutions and to make sure that every…
The children in the mass graves had their hands zip tied behind their backs.
The doctors in the mass graves had their hands zip tied behind their backs.
They were executed en masse, 300 of them.
300 people who people who lived, breathed, loved, laughed, mattered.
The hours you put in at work turn into tax money that turns into this. You are paying for this. You don’t have decent transit or schools or healthcare, but there’s money enough for this.
It's really crazy to me that the Democratic party destroyed 20-years of worth of good will with Muslims and Arabs in just 2 weeks, losing an entire generation that was raised in the progressive coalition, possibly forever. The rapidity of it, the finality--it's astonishing.
Should I put up my hair or leave it down?
They're k*lling children in Gaza.
What should I make for dinner?
They're k*lling children in Gaza.
We're out of dishwasher pods, babe!
They're k*lling children in Gaza.
Do you want to co-work sometime?
They're k*lling children in Gaza.
Imagine killing 3300 children in 23 days and then saying you are fighting for civilization, claiming you’re the victim and asking the world to stand with you.
University admin were on the wrong side of civil rights.
University admin were on the wrong side of Vietnam.
University admin were on the wrong side of South Africa.
University admin are on the wrong side of Palestine.
To recount: Israel attacked Iran's consulate, killing 16. Iran retaliated with a symbolic show of force, killing no one. Iran is being sanctioned, and Israel (who started this) is demanding an invasion of Rafah in exchange for not continuing to escalate towards WWIII.
People in Gaza want a ceasefire and are not getting our humanitarian relief. If your capacity right now is only for donating, I suggest one of the following: 🧵
Things to remember:
1) This deal was on offer weeks ago, but Israel kept nixing it. Earlier pressure could have saved thousands. This is not an accomplishment of Western diplomacy, it's a failure of it.
2) The truce hasn't begun and Israel is still bombing Gaza, North & South.
Btw, the Occupied West bank is now fully under lockdown. The 500 checkpoints that control Palestinians' every movement are all closed to Palestinians. This is effectively a blockade like the one imposed on Gaza. This is another violation of international law & basic human rights.
I am glad this moment is radicalizing you, waking you up to the fact that you don't live in a democracy and that neither your press nor your speech are free. But never forget that those 20,000 Palestinians didn't want to die to wake you up, they should have been allowed to live.
lots of ppl on my flight to DC appear to be headed to the march. Cute Muslim family with the kids holding art supplies and rolled up posters. Person who nodded at my kuffiyeh and gave me a raised fist. Teenager next to me wearing Palestine necklace… we are many.
Do you think if we had the right chants they'd support our liberation? It's not *how* we ask for liberation that angers them, it's that we dare demand it at all.
I will never forget or forgive that while my people were mass slaughtered, I was forced to worry about university administrators targeting my students and colleagues for speaking up.
The Great Omari Mosque opened in 1340. It was G*za’s oldest and largest mosque.
It was 608 years older than the State of Isr**l. Yesterday, Isr**l destroyed it.
...even when a 6-year-old Palestinian was murdered 30 miles away, even when a Palestinian student was run over in Cali, even when 3 Palestinian students were shot in Vermont... even when students on our own campus have been doxxed and harassed.
Lindsey Graham (Sen.): "Level the place"
Max Miller (OH Rep): "We're going to turn that into a parking lot."
Brian Mast (FL Rep): No such thing as an "innocent Palestinian civilian."
Andy Ogles (TN Rep): re shredded children "I think we should kill 'em all."
I’m skeptical of people who hang on every inflammatory word of 19-year-old college students but are indifferent to members of Congress calling on people to run over protestors with cars or use nuclear weapons on civilians. There is a revealing inconsistency and imbalance here.
Every single member of the Biden administration at this moment is a mass murderer. You aided. You abetted. Neither we nor history will ever forgive you.
This president has refused to meet with his own students, but here he is meeting with a political official representing a state that is before the ICJ for the crime of genocide.
They’ll tell you to be a good immigrant. Put your head down, work hard. So you do. You make it, you are Valedictorian at a great school. Turns out, your hard work can only get you so far, because you’re still Muslim and brown and no amount of work can change that. Shame on USC.
This is so deeply horrifying. Displaced Palestinians passing, en masse, through a hollowed shipping container with facial recognition devices and cameras. Settler colonialism + surveillance tech.
New images taken this morning by
@Maxar
show an enormous crowd of displaced Palestinians filing through two structures on Salah al-Din road at this location: 31.474, 34.436. More on those structures in the next tweet.
It's hard to understand why an economics professor showing concern for a student would be thrown to the ground and arrested. This is not an obvious way to defuse a crisis.
What is there left to say? They displaced 1.4 million people to Rafah, now they are attacking it by air and land. What else do I need to do to convince you that Palestinians are human beings? That no one deserves this? If you don't see it by now, you never will.
I suspect my colleagues who live and die by the Kalven Report and political neutrality will have little to say about this. As a Palestinian, I am no longer shocked by hypocrisy.
Our students & faculty should be resting. Instead we’re in court today, because UChicago—the supposed champion of free speech—decided to criminally charge 26 students and 2 faculty for attending a peaceful sit in.
They labeled Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions terrorism. They killed hundreds and injured thousands in Gaza's 2018-2019 marches. Don't fall for "but not this way" logic. No form of Palestinian resistance has ever been acceptable to Zionists.
Funny how we are asked to believe that no one would be motivated to work hard without the incentive of a wage. Then social movements rise up, and we watch people in their millions spend countless hours of unpaid labor trying to better the world.
This interview would have been unimaginable on CNN twenty years ago. The struggle for Palestinian liberation made this possible. Every protest, every post, every school presentation, every op/ed, every infographic—every action has helped make space for our voice.
It boggles my mind that most of you have never had the experience of watching the world mass slaughter your people, deem them dispensable, unworthy of life.
As an Arab at the age of 34, it’s all I’ve ever known.
We need you functioning through the despair.
We owe Gaza endurance.
Here's what's helped me stay something close to sane and ensured I can sustain my livelihood, advocate and organize.
I am not a mental health expert, take this with a grain of salt or leave it! 🧵
We are not statistics. I want you to take a moment and imagine 2,055 children. Think of the child you love most in the world. How many children are enrolled in their school? How many schools would need to be destroyed to get to 2,055 children? We are not statistics.
Many accounts that Israeli airstrikes last night were among the most intense yet. The death toll now stands at 5,087, including 2,055 children and 15,273 wounded. An additional 1,500 are reported missing and buried under rubble, including 830 children. How to comprehend?
A friend’s partner’s home got tagged with genocidal language two days ago on the North side of Chicago yesterday, because they’ve been displaying a Palestinian flag.
Allies. We need you now more than ever. Palestinians are not just mourning, we’re shouting into the void, and we’re losing our jobs and getting attacked on the street and arrested for protesting. We need you present, we need you consistent, we need you loud and clear.
So far, Columbia, Indiana University and Northwestern have all had admin bypass faculty committees to unilaterally change codes in order to suspend and ban protesters.
Northwestern President Michael Schill changed the student code of conduct *THIS MORNING* to ban tents from campus as students set up their Palestine protest encampment. And he threatened students with suspension, expulsion or criminal charges.
In Mexico City yesterday, we came across this display in solidarity with Palestine. Alongside it were pictures of disappeared Mexican teacher activists. The person we met there told us: Palestine is not far away, our oppressions are interconnected.
Being on search committees has confirmed for me how arbitrary success in academia is. Yes, you have to be smart and capable to make it. But you could have been just as smart and just as capable and not made it. Basically, we work our asses off to buy a lottery ticket.
Academia's love language is feedback. The people who read your stuff and critique it are actually doing you an enormous solid, and you should treat them accordingly.
Why weren’t 1000 dead Palestinians enough for you to call for a ceasefire? 2000? 3000? 4000? 5000? 6000? 7000? 8000? 9000? 10,000? 11,000? 12,000? 13,000? 14,000? 15,000? 16,000? 17,000?
Was 18,600 your number?
Shame on you.
The U.S. must not provide $10 billion in military aid for Netanyahu's right-wing government to conduct their horrific war against innocent Palestinians.
Read my letter to President Biden asking him to stop funding this war and to support UN efforts for a humanitarian ceasefire.
You know a good rule of thumb is don’t touch students… ever, like at all, like ever, definitely don’t grab them or turn them around or keep holding them or like touch them at all, ever. No matter what they’re saying or doing. It seems, like so many things, kinda obvious…
I got a PhD from NYU and I'm on the tenure track at UChicago, but I still get a recurring nightmare where I am failing a class and will not be graduating high school. Come on, brain! Be COOL.
This is coming from colleagues on the ground at institutions with high levels of repression. It seems there are credible threats that folks’ records/graduation statuses are being threatened by admin
Here’s why it matters for a city like Chicago to pass a ceasefire resolution: 🧵
It helps solidify the growing consensus that the American public wants a ceasefire. Why does that matter?
One day, it will be easy for anyone of any religion or ethnicity to drive from Jerusalem to Gaza just to have a picnic by the sea.
No checkpoints, no special documents, no tanks, no guns, no border walls.
That's the promise of a Free Palestine.
A mosque selling stolen land should be protested.
A church selling stolen land should be protested.
A temple selling stolen land should be protested.
A synagogue selling stolen land should be protested.
This pin got a lot of love in South Bend today. But this interaction stood out:
The cashier at the grocery store, a high school junior said as I’d come to find out, said “I love your pin. I can’t say more, I don’t want to get fired.” What world are we handing this generation?
Breaking: Two Palestinian American citizens with Chicago roots were taken by Israeli soldiers in an early morning raid on their shelter in Gaza today, months after U.S. officials approved them for evacuation but have since failed to secure their exit.
@extrsh
@asadabukhalil
1) it’s not okay to bomb mosques no matter how old anyway 2) That’s like saying because the Taj Mahal has had restoration work, it’s okay to bomb it. 3) please get your disgusting, fascist, genocidal self out of my replies. Blocked.
All the Palestinians I know have become pared down versions of ourselves.
My partner says I’m being “held together by duct tape.”
Don’t ask how I am doing unless you really want to know. We won’t hide our grief to spare you the discomfort of the truth.
We are not okay.
I don't know how to live in this world.
500 people. 500 doctors, patients, refugees. 500 lives. 500 stories. 500 worlds. In a hospital. Bombed in a hospital. A hospital.
Please tell me how to continue to exist in this world.
Periodic reminder to my non-Black people of color: every right we have in this country is the direct result of Black struggle, not white generosity. We quite literally owe Black people everything & we should reject any version of POC success built on Black exclusion.
I thought a lot about this tweet yesterday, & I think it's pretty destructive. Yes, we need to address rising antisemitism & rising Islamophobia. But activists aren't the main perpetrators of either. 🧵
During the massacre at al-Shifa Hospital, the Israeli army shot patients in their beds and doctors who refused to abandon the sick, separated people into groups with differently-colored bracelets, and executed hundreds of civil government employees.
“I was stopped by four soldiers for wearing a white keffiyeh around my head,"
UK citizen arrested, interrogated and detained by Saudi authorities for wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh while on religious pilgrimage in Mecca
I have been to so many protests in my life.
None as big as this. None as beautiful as this. None as full of rage and joy and grief. I love us, I love our people—Palestinians, our allies, all the free people of the world. I believe. I believe that we will win.
🇵🇸
Huey Newton and Bobby Seale met at a college campus and then founded the Black Panthers.
Students, college activism matters. It’s always mattered. Stay the course, we’ve got your back.
I especially recommend donating to Rashida Tlaib, who is under enormous attacks. Or to Cori Bush who sponsored this resolution and is politically impeccable.
Rashida link:
Cori Link:
Why does the press always describe Houthis as Iran-backed but not the IDF/IOF as “US-backed”? I’d like to see all future reporting say the “US-backed Israeli military.”
On
@npr
, the All Things Considered coverage of Harvard and Claudine Gay took for granted that students actually were calling for genocide and calling for violence against Jews—a blatant lie.
Zionists & co: if only Palestinians tried nonviolent resistance...
Also zionists & co: we need to doxx, fire, and destroy the lives of all these Palestinian students nonviolently resisting...
So the email says "The University’s position is that unionization is not in the best interest of graduate students." Who is "The University"? Last I checked, this supposedly faculty-run institution did not ask me or any other faculty what we thought of grad student unionization.
Biden's campaign asked to meet with Arab and Muslim leaders in Illinois today. Most refused, see below for why. The ones who did meet with his campaign won't come forward to reveal who they are. That's how toxic Biden is in our community.
2) Donate to organizations that are providing legal aid to those getting doxxed, fired, or harassed for expressing support for Palestinians.
Pal Legal:
CAIR:
1) Donate to politicians demanding a ceasefire. AIPAC and its superpac, the United Democracy Project, spend enormous amounts on congressional races to sink anyone critical of Israel.
Here's a list of the house reps who bravely called for a ceasefire.
I cannot respect you as a human being if you go over your conference presentation time by more than one minute. Everyone deserves 60 seconds of grace. After that, I can't help but think you believe your time is more important than everyone else's. And I hate that.
Let’s be clear. If Biden loses and Trump wins, it will be because Biden chose Israel’s massacre over his voter base, over the young and POCs, over the 60% of Americans and 80% of democrats who want a cease fire. It is his job to earn our votes, we owe him nothing.
University students have been at the heart of American radical activism for a century, and university administrators have been on the wrong side every time. It matters what we do on college campuses. These fights are worth having.
I have been conducting research about the 1968 Columbia protests for such a long time, but I honestly do not know what to say right now. Except, perhaps, that student movements have been one of the most progressive, courageous political avantgardes of the past century
There's no way to be an ethical member of the Biden administration at this point. Your boss has been overseeing a genocide. Save your legacy and walk. You don't want to have to explain to your children or your grandchildren why you stayed and played a role in this, however small.
@AmrAlwakeal
@LexiAlex
Yeah, I meant Americans. Even here, many were critical of Democrat foreign policy but willing to vote for them as lesser of two evils, as less Islamophobic at home, less war-mongering etc. but no more!
A 6-year-old Palestinian child was stabbed to death by his landlord in Chicago today, as the landlord shouted “you Muslims must die.” Every journalist who has dehumanized Palestinians this week, who had spread unverified stories about us… this child’s blood is on your hands.
As usual, Zionists are once again interrupting our grief and mourning to tell us it didn't happen. Here you go, trolls. May you & the war criminals you defend rot in hell.
3) Donate to activist organizations mobilizing for a ceasefire or against weapons manufacturers in the US, such as:
- Palestinian Youth Movement:
-We are dissenters:
-Jewish Voices for Peace:
People do not migrate because they just want to up and leave everything they know and love to live as 2nd class citizens in this country. They migrate because through decades of empire-building & war-mongering the US made their home countries unlivable.
