I find the replies here quite interesting. A lot of people saying things like 'my nearest supermarket is 2 miles, it would take 40 minutes to walk there so of course I drive'. I wonder if any of them have even considered cycling? 2 miles is 10-12 minutes each way.

@robbeckettcomic @MikeyCycling Hi Rob, 99% of the time I'm riding my bike I'm really happy - I'm getting fresh air, endorphins, it's keeping me slim and healthy, plus I'm saving a shedload of money. The 1% I'm not happy is when I get cut up or close passed by angry, impatient motorists. I hope this helps.

My bus ride into work, from my village to central Oxford, usually takes about 20 minutes. This morning - first day of half term - it took 12 minutes. Amazing what proportion of rush-hour traffic is parents doing the school run!

@anon_opin I'm not condoning it and I don't do it myself, but we could ask *why* some people cycle on the pavement. Could it be because our roads are so hostile to cyclists? In countries like Denmark and the Netherlands, pavement cycling isn't really a thing.

@GBNEWS In case Dr Yeadon hadn't noticed, we've just passed 150,000 recorded deaths from Covid in this country, in less than 2 years of the pandemic. A very bad flu year might result in 30,000 deaths. So it's clearly MUCH worse than flu.

@BristolMoves Not judging, I just find it interesting. There's a form of transport that's great for short journeys as it has very low running costs and keeps you fit at the same time, but for many people it's not even on their radar.

A guy at work has just sent an email round moaning about being caught at 35mph in a 30 zone, he's saying it's 'not a big deal'. I'd love to send a reply explaining the extra danger from every 1mph above the limit, but I have to work with these people. I feel sad I'm not braver...

@anon_opin Daftest post on here ever. If you live in an area with reasonable public transport, and you enjoy walking and/or cycling as well, why would you automatically need the expense/hassle of a car? Perhaps you prefer not to clog up the streets and pollute the atmosphere?

@theJeremyVine @JeremyVineOn5 There's a hugely expensive system of roads called Motorways that I help to pay for through my taxes but I'm forbidden by law from riding my bicycle on. But I don't moan about that because, unlike Sharon, I understand how the tax system works.

@tonyblackburn Nobody 'pays to go on the roads', Tony, they're Public Highways, the clue is in the name. Motorists are taxed based on the external costs they impose - congestion, pollution, road wear, accidents etc. Cyclists impose almost none of those costs so are taxed accordingly.

@StuInNorway @theJeremyVine Exactly. In the Netherlands all the cycle lanes are full of people like this - equal amounts of both sexes, all ages from 8-80, normal clothes, not fancy bikes, just pootling about doing their normal day to day activities.

@JuliaHB1 What a ridiculous and frankly offensive comparison. Even if you don't think face masks have health benefits (debatable), we're being asked to wear them for a tiny fraction of our waking hours. Women in Afghanistan will be forced to wear them 100% of the time.

@J_M_C123 @ladbible Neither of them pay Road Tax, it was abolished in 1937. Roads are funded from Council Tax and general taxation, so cyclists pay as much as everyone else towards them. Whilst causing minimal road wear and not causing any pollution.

@JuliaHB1 Why not cycle? Alternatively, London has an excellent underground rail system - why not use that? If you insist on using the most congesting form of personal transport in a busy, crowded city, you're part of the problem.

@JeremyVineOn5 You only have to look at what happened in Australia when they made bike helmets compulsory. Cycling rates plummeted (most of those cyclists would have got in cars instead, increasing congestion and pollution) but with no noticeable improvement in cycling injuries and deaths.
