4 years ago we had the mayor bike to school with my 6 year old, within the first :30 seconds they were almost hit by a driver on live TV. Every leader should be required to ride a bike (if able) with a 6 year old before they provide any insight/direction on bike infrastructure.
The solution will never be a louder bell, a stronger helmet or brighter clothing. The solution will always be political will to make real change. Everything else is a distraction and victim blaming.
You think a person on a bike rolling through a stop sign angers a driver? Try coming to a complete stop, looking in all directions then proceeding with caution.
City: We unanimously declare a climate emergency! We must make change no matter what the cost!!
Community: Can we put in a protected bike lane?
City: No, we’ll lose parking spots.

Don't be angry at the person riding on the sidewalk, direct your frustration to the city that has refused to provide safe routes. Let's attack the problem not the symptom.
“why don't you just move to the Netherlands if you love bikes so much"
Umm ok, but also thought maybe trying to make things better where we live might also be an option.
“Cyclists are so dramatic” LOL, you wanna see drama? Make a complete stop at a stop sign, look in all directions and proceed with caution - the driver behind you will put on a rage and tantrum filled performance of a lifetime.
It’s with a very heavy heart that we will be removing this pilot road, just not enough people driving on it. We encourage you to write an email to your councillor about future road opportunities.
Please check our website for alternative car routes.

P1: Ok we need a vehicle to move some kids to school
P2: How about a bus?
P1: Perfect.
P2: Lets make it big and yellow so no one misses it
P1: Great

I never want to see another human trot across a crosswalk, hurry their stroller/kids/mobility device or rush a senior resident through an intersection or any road. It’s ridiculous, like we’ve been gifted some incredible act of patience from our dear auto overlords.Absolutely absurd
We build vehicles that weigh 9000 pounds with 1000HP, can go 0-60mph in 3.3 seconds and market them recklessly. We then ask people to wear construction vests to cross the street. This is all beyond absurd, it's truly incredible that we've normalized this.
Pretty amazed at the response to these already. Thanks everyone, hope they spark some conversations on the serious imbalance we’ve normalized on our streets.

For decades, we literally spent trillions to retrofit our cities, our public spaces and our society around cars.
It just didn't work.
If only we had an alternative.
If only...

A driver can sit in a busy drive thru for 20 mins but can't wait 4 seconds for me to cross the street. One day I hope to get the same respect that a big mac gets.

One reason why I think it’s important to continue to highlight the absurdity on our streets is that most people just don’t see it. Despite it being obvious to some, so many don't have real clarity because we have done such an incredible job of normalizing this imbalance.
“I’m an avid cyclist but...”
Exactly the problem. We don’t need infrastructure just for avid cyclists, we need it for those new and apprehensive riders who are terrified of these hostile spaces we call streets.
Drivers can wait 4 hours for an outlet mall sale but can’t wait 4 seconds for me to cross the street.
One day I hope to be as respected as a pair of discount shoes.
Tip: if you almost hit me, my family or anyone with your car. Do not give a cute little wave. This is violent behaviour that once again gets treated as a little “whoopsie”
Pull over, stop your car and take some time to think about how you almost killed someone and their family.

We’ve normalized monster vehicles and denormalized kids walking/rolling to school. An incredibly clear and powerful testament to just how far we’ve fallen in our reverence to the automobile.
Every study ever done: Less cars, more reliable transit and safe active transportation options is a good thing.
Cities: Hmm I don't know, can we really trust every study ever done?

The simple act of walking/biking/rolling your kids to school will forever change how you see our “shared” spaces. The imbalance and absurdity of it all is shocking.
Oh dear god, one more time: Stopping in time for a child running onto the street is not heroic/lucky, it is your goddamn obligation as a driver. Cost of entry. Kids are allowed to be unpredictable, you are not. I’m sorry but that’s just the way it is.

“Walking in a group can be a lot of fun!” but our total obsession and reverence to the automobile has stolen any joy you might have had from this simple experience. What a beautiful world we’ve created.

If only we were prepared to tackle catastrophic climate change the way we are in the off chance everyone on the planet drives to the same mall on the same day.

Exactly the problem. We don’t need infrastructure just for avid cyclists, we also need it for those new and vulnerable riders who are terrified of the murderous spaces you ask them to share.

The fact that a massive yellow bus that transports children with flashing red lights was still not enough that we needed to add an extended arm, with cameras, for an oversized stop sign to physically block the road from drivers tells me all I need to know about our auto obsession
