Astonishing stat: 40% of council houses sold through Right to Buy are now rented by private landlords (up to 70% in some places) at double the cost of council housing. Presumably with many of those renters supported by housing benefit. Utter madness!
🎉Personal News: Today is my first day as
@IPPR

Some personal news: I am starting a new, exciting role
@IPPR
as Director of Politics and Policy. This will focus on shaping progressive politics in the U.K. at this really exciting political juncture! Very excited to get going. 🎉🎉🎉
This will be a key role in our senior management team.
Our Director of Research & Engagement

@BorisJohnson
just failed to tell the truth. He is not building 40 hospitals - it’s just 6! Meanwhile we have a maintenance backlog of over £6bn - that’s just basic repairs to make them warm, safe and clean.
Spot on from
@graceblakeley
. Apparently May has ended austerity! Let’s ask pensioners who need social care, parents that need childcare, workers who need further education, kids who need youth clubs and libraries, and businesses who transport investment up north how that’s going?
One of the most sickening parts of our response to Covid-19 has been the ease with which past social ills have been addressed. For years we’ve heard we can’t afford it or it’s too difficult. Turns out that was bullshit designed to preserve the status quo.
1/ Our new report

@OwenJones84
@IPPR
research has been clear it is barely more expensive than cap proposals but is likely to come with more savings, more joined up care and is more popular with the public.
In order to get elected as Labour leader, Keir Starmer promised to introduce free social care.
Now one of his key Shadow Cabinet members has declared that it would be too expensive.
1/ Today
@ippr
launched ‘Care fit for carers’. In it we find that 1 in 2 NHS and care workers have seen a deterioration in their mental health as a result of the Covid-19 crisis. They think it’s a bigger priority for govt than PPE.
This graph shows that Finland now build more social housing than the U.K. They have a population of c.5 million compared to over 60 million in the U.K. This is why their homelessness has gone down whilst us has shot up!

who brilliantly captures the anxiety that growing up gay involves and the feeling of excitement that discovering gay culture and art can engender. We need more of it to help the next generation because the battle is far from over!
What does Keir Starmer mean by mission driven government? My new report and article in the
@FT
sets out how to reform Whitehall to deliver on missions. Spoiler: the biggest challenge is tackling “Treasury brain”!
1/ Yesterday I hosted an
@IPPR
event with
@AngelaRayner
on representation in parliament. It was inspiring to hear her amazing story of becoming an MP and to her call for more working class people, women and people of colour to enter parliament.
Just take that in for a minute. Johnson’s solution to the social care problem - the cap - might help as little as 30,000 people per year. There are 1.2 MILLION people with unmet care needs in this country! The cap isn’t the solution people!
We need to talk about global vaccine inequality.
💉 High income countries.
Population: 16% of global total
Vaccine orders: 74 % of global total
That is a HUGE inequality.
💉 So far high income countries have 4.2 bn doses ordered compared to 675m in low income countries
“We run our health system hot every winter...In future we may have to think a bit more about resilience and a bit less about efficiency”. Absolutely spot on from

@IPPR

1/ Today we
@IPPR

@lisanandy

1/ In his
@thetimes
column Rohan Silva argues that the UK should replace our NHS with a private insurance system. He is right to point out that the NHS needs to deliver better outcomes. But he is dead wrong to suggest a different funding/provider model will achieve this.
1/ New research out today by
@IPPR
shows that trust in British politics is in free fall. 66% of voters now think that politicians are mainly ‘out for themselves’ compared to 4% who think they are doing ‘the best for their country’.
1/ Lots to welcome - and ponder - in
@Keir_Starmer
’s speech on missions up in Manchester. My biggest takeaway: we may have a leader of a major political party that really gets the need for fundamental renewal in the U.K. (first since Blair or maybe even Thatcher). 🧵
I can’t believe how many days of work
@IPPR
have been disrupted with political coups, economic crises, policy u-turns and emergency budgets in recent years. Honestly, no wonder we have a productivity crisis in this country! Spare a thought for the think tankers!
It’s obviously great that Leon and McDonalds (and others I am sure) are providing free/discounted food/drinks to NHS staff. But what about social care workers who are also on the frontline of the crisis?
#Corvid19uk
This is unbelievable. If companies want to benefit from our markets, labour & infrastructure they must pay their fair share of tax. And, if they don’t we should force them to using an ‘alternative minimum corporation tax’ as proposed by
@graceblakeley
Interesting conclusion from
@robfordmancs
“It is no longer a revolt on the right driving the Tory vote down in by-elections, it is a collapse in the centre.”
If, as expected, this is a gross exaggeration of the strategy announced by government tomorrow,
@BorisJohnson
must launch an immediate inquiry as to how these messages got into the press. Ministers who leaked should be sacked. This isn’t a game. It is life or death.
1/ Usually have a lot of respect for

Jeremy Hunt says they 'do have the legal framework to impose those sanctions, the question is whether that actually happens.'
The Chancellor will later announce
Of all the things that have happened in the last few years this has got to be one of the most outrageous and scary. The UK (thankfully) is not the US. But let’s be in no doubt: democracy in the West is under severe strain and urgently needs renewal and reform.
The care home crisis is a national scandal. We must solve the social care funding crisis now. New

There is a narrative emerging that the NHS has managed covid-19 really well. But we need to be careful: it’s only survived by denying vital care for millions of patients with other conditions. We must ensure it is more resilient for next time.

Delighted to be launching a new Commission on Health and Prosperity today! As we emerge from the pandemic I can’t think of a better time to be thinking about how we make our society healthier, fairer and more prosperous.

Even if we found that social insurance systems are better (and most evidence suggests that they aren’t systemically better - some are and some aren’t) it’s unlikely the improvement would be worth the transition cost. We’d be better of sticking but funding/reforming better.

The reaction to this mention of patriotism highlights a divide between voters and bits of the left. Most voters are proud to be British. They won’t elect a party that is ashamed of it. Let’s have some nuance: we can be proud of UK, acknowledge it’s history and be internationalist
Whether you call it "patriotism" or not, it's important for the left to say: "We should be proud of our great traditions of people who fought at great cost and sacrifice for our rights and freedoms" and "What's more loving of your country than wanting to cure it of injustice?"
COVID-19 has exposed the fault lines at the heart of our care sector. Under-funding, exploited staff and precarious private provision. One thing is clear: we need reform now! My research w/

If you have a mental health condition the NHS is not 'free at the point of need'. Even if the government meets its targets, 75% of adults and 65% of children with a mental health condition still receive no treatment. This is a scandal.

We are seeing increasing polarisation because our economic model has broken down: finance led growth is no-longer delivering. We need more radical economic change to share the gains of growth more equally.
@graceblakeley
is on the money with this (if you’ll forgive the pun)
Those who want to return to the 1990s refuse to acknowledge that Blair's political settlement was based on the illusory gains of finance-led growth.
After a decade of stagnation, politics is once again a question of who gets the gains from growth - and the centre has no answers.

1/ 🧵on the (not so) mini-budget. I have been working in policy for about a decade now. I have never been as worried about a policy agenda or the direction our country is taking as I am today. I think it tells us that something is profoundly wrong with our democracy. Here is why!
Managed to escape the desk for 20 mins this afternoon - and felt 10 times more productive and happier afterwards. Working from home is all well and good but we are not supposed to stay in the same place all day!

The recent budget was completely silent on health and care (despite being mid-pandemic). Our report out today argues that we need £12bn investment in health and social care to ‘build back better’ after the pandemic.
@IPPR

@cthomasippr
1/ Feels like there is a need for an injection of balance and analysis in the NHS privatisation debate. So this 🧵 is a stab at that.
Conclusion: There may be some merit to careful use of private capacity in the SHORT TERM but only a revitalised NHS will solve the problem.
1/ Interesting. I’ve come to the opposite conclusion. These big trends are essentially an increase in societal risk. The question now is are these risks pooled/shared or faced by individuals? If we decide to pool risks then we will inevitably end up with a bigger state.
It is the end of my first year as Director of Research at IPPR. What a year it’s been. Despite all of the challenges,
@IPPR
have been as impactful and prolific as ever. I am so proud of the team and the work they have done. Here are just a few of the highlights. 🎄🎄🎄
2021 is almost over! While unfortunately this year did not see the end of Covid-19, it was still a major year for public policy and politics
Before we head off for the festive season, here's a thread of IPPR research highlights from the year...
For years campaigners have argued that we need to make universal credit faster to receive, more generous and easier to access. We were told it wasn’t possible. Why has it taken coronavirus for us to discover that is not the case?
#Budget2020
We have seen a 'great risk shift' from the state/companies onto the heads of individuals. Nowhere is this more clear than the gig economy. In light of Coronavirus the government must now act to put in place social insurance.
1/ This proposal from
@wesstreeting
to shift towards a different model in primary care - where GPs are salaried - warrants real consideration (though undoubtedly it will prove controversial with some). Here is why 🧵🧶
Labour will be consulting on phasing out the GP partnership model in favour of salaried GPs (and more of them), more ‘front doors’ to the NHS in primary care.
The current system is stretched to breaking point. We are thinking radically.
More here 👇🏻
Amazing that
@UKLabour
have backed
@ippr

@graceblakeley
and I have written about how we combat the financialisation of care.
#PeopleBeforeProfits
This makes me angry! Who cares if they don’t improve results? How have we warped our education system so much that this is the measure of value and success?
It is time to simply ban paid second jobs for MPs. The public see this type of ‘extracurricular’ activity as completely out of bounds and it undermines faith in politics which as
@IPPR
has shown is in free-fall
The crisis has exposed a second pandemic: one of economic risk. Both businesses and govt have passed on risks to individuals over recent decades. As a result millions face devastation. We must act now to rebuild our social safety net. Me for
@VersoBooks
P&O claimed over £10m in Furlough money and £4m in emergency support from the government during the pandemic. After their decision to dismiss hundreds of staff without warning the government must claim it back. The state should not prop up the profits of extractive businesses.
The pandemic has had all sorts of impacts on our society. Few are more worrying than the damage it has done to young people and learning. Despite this the government have yet to commit anything like the resource needed to address the problem. This should be a national mission!
I’ve written for the

Totally agree Shaun. People focus on the current level of spending and say money isn’t the problem. What they forget that it is sustained spending levels with stability over time that allows you to build capacity - this is more intuitive with capital spend but is true of revenue.
The private sector vs public sector narrative the chancellor is championing is very damaging. 1/ comparison is warped by the plethora of low pay low skill jobs in private sector - the solution is a bigger minimum wage rise (so it’s actually a living wage)
