Quite a moment. The Mayfield review has calculated the lifetime cost of writing people off as long-term sick; it’s £1m in lost earnings for 22yo “with the state incurring a similar cost”.

The difference with New Labour is marked. They did it in 2001 but only after an independent commission (Wanless), and with a relentless narrative to win an argument for doing so at that election

This is going to be a big question for the Budget. The problem for Labour is they have already raised taxes once to cut waiting lists modestly, but is there public appetite to do it again?
How many more sacrifices must the British public make to protect 'our' NHS? How many more years of rising taxes, under-investment in other services (defence, criminal justice), delays in getting treatment before we insist on fundamental reform?

And here is a public policy success
In the UK, around 5.3 million people aged 18 years and over (10.6%) smoked cigarettes in 2024. This is the lowest proportion of current smokers since records began in 2011, based on our estimates from the Annual Population Survey (APS). ➡️ https://t.co/dFI5L7S0MO

On life sciences the Government should be leaning in hard. There is a good narrative to build with policy substance if they want it. We MIGHT see some movement in the Budget on medicines spend but it needs to be part of a broader story on investment, research, growth, skills
