Dakota got offered a "Marvel Movie", so she asked someone she knew what it was like to work on a "Marvel Movie".
No one explained the difference between what she was working on and what Elizabeth Olsen worked on until it was way too late.
I feel badly for her.

Land grant universities are up there with the National Parks, Southern folk music (and its derivatives), and baseball as the best things about America.
@simonesmithedit
We were basically a generation that was raised by wolves. So, when we hit young adulthood, we looked WAY past the Boomers for models of correct adult behavior: swing dancing, cocktails, more formal clothes, etc. All processed through a punk rock lens.
@Empty_America
The median American of any race is 38.5.
Someone would make a lot of money figuring out a way to revive the Adult Nightlife that died in the 1960s.

@Empty_America
The Baby Boomers killed it.
We used to have an adult-oriented culture and then it shifted to youth-oriented one. But there aren’t enough young people anymore to support it. So, the culture needs to pivot back to adult tastes.
But, everyone has forgotten what 40 year-olds want.

I just didn't like it.
Usually, I'll start thinking about how I'd fix something, but it was beyond that for me.
If you liked it, then that is awesome.

Yup. I am a native Californian. Everyone that I grew up with still lives here.

Basically, Marvel went bankrupt. They sold the film rights to their top franchises (Spider-Man, The X-Men). Then, Marvel Studios was formed to capitalize on their B-listers.
That is what Elizabeth Olsen signed on to. It went so well that Disney bought Marvel AND Fox.
Sony, who…

Margot Robbie has done the best job merchandising her body of any actress in Hollywood history. It has been so smart and no one talks about it.
She has learned and internalized commercial lessons of the last 60 years of cinematic nudity better than anyone.

Be a parent of a kid under 1 is a classic “everyone has a strategy until they are punched in the face” situation.
If you keep ‘em alive and don’t get divorced, then you are doing fine.
@TheFirstOkiro
They set out to make a Trilogy around Rey, accidentally created a better protagonist in Finn, shoved him to the side, accidentally resolved her character arc in Episode VIII, and wondered why Episode IX killed the franchise.

The dude who smokes weed, has non-traditional romantic relationships, is in the business of solar power and electric cars, and has a globalist worldview is somehow Right Wing because he upset the staffers of some Fortune 500 companies.
The world is weird.

Conan is the Gen X Johnny Carson.
The fact that he got shived by a less talented, more politically savvy Boomer and had to watch the institution he cared so much about degraded in the process is the most Gen X story of all-time.
There are entire Twitter accounts dedicated to sharing epic clips of comedians being about half as funny as the guy you chill with at the bar after work while Conan continues to be one of the funniest guys in show business doing the silliest shit.
@stevendeknight
Probably bad.
Netflix is basically a growth stock and if it turns out that less than 10% of their traffic comes from Netflix originals, then they have a problem on two fronts.
1. The stock.
2. The studios with their IP libraries.
This is really tech vs Hollywood.
@TheCinesthetic
Willem Dafoe has literally played Jesus and some of the most loathsome villains ever.
JOHN WICK isn't quite as good without the ambiguity that creates.
@GunnerDobbins
The Secret Sauce at
@Marvel
is that:
(a) Their heroes are significantly weaker than their villains;
(b) That requires teams and team-ups (eg FF vs Doctor Doom);
(c) Teams and Team-Ups promote serialization (ie 'Soap Opera).
So, 'Heel Turns' by heroes are generally pointless at…

I believe a Liberal Education has intrinsic value. It is a great precursor to a post-graduate degree in a professional field.
However, the United States has massively overproduced people with BAs by marketing them as having economic advantages that they no longer have.
@baileymeyers
Lesson 1: You only get one nude debut. Don’t waste it. EG - Anne Hathaway, HAVOC.
Because the Internet lives forever, doing a nude scene in a small movie is not just a waste of time, it hurts the commercial prospects of the same move later.
@davidfrum
I'd love to get the perspective of the Fraternities on those campuses on how those university presidents feel about Free Speech.
I'll bet at least one has gone on social probation over a sign, a party theme, or something else that is 'speech' in a First Amendment sense.
@SCentralized
George Lucas’s key innovation is having characters speak naturalistically in a fantasy setting. You no idea what half the stuff being referenced where in 1977. That is why people watched it over and over.
@tracewoodgrains
Good design comes from an era when Boomers were young. Therefore, it is ‘conservative’.
Ugly design comes alt-weeklies that Gen Xers (like me!) loved, so it is ‘progressive’. That solidified when Bush The Elder attack THE SIMPSONS (Matt Groening started with ‘Life In Hell’)…

Al Pacino in the first two GODFATHER movies. His not winning an Oscar for either of those performances has had a terrible effect on American film acting.

High trust countries tend to be rich.
Low trust countries tend to be poor.
Re-establishing public trust is pretty essential to our collective well-being going forward.

Checked into a hotel in Atlanta on Valentines Day. The restaurant in the lobby was a Ruth’s Criss steakhouse, so I grabbed some dinner before heading to bed.
I was the whitest white man in human history that night.

The problem is that Harley Quinn has gone from a great anti-villain to a mediocre anti-hero and is now just a protagonist. That makes Batman the antagonist of her story.
Nothing wrong with that in theory, but the execution has been lame.

Disagree.
He clearly has basically an infinite supply of money, but that doesn't buy him out of being a human being and, therefore, dissatisfied. Kind of the whole point of the show.

didn’t leave anywhere else for the Skywalker Saga to go. Luke is dead. Han is dead. Leia is broken. Their son is irredeemable. Rey the sole heir to whatever the Jedi order was.
The End.

What the US did for AIDS in Africa may be the greatest progressive achievement by any government, ever.
20 million people are alive today because of it and it offered zero obvious geo-political benefits. We just did the right thing, because we could.
@Massawyrm
My guess is that few shows make up a HUGE percentage of the views and they are mostly ‘backlist’: THE OFFICE, FRIENDS, etc.
Music publishers are valuable mostly for their libraries. What if 85% of Netflix traffic comes from old shows owned by others?
@paulkrugman
It isn’t the size of the debt that bothers me. It is what we are spending it on.
If we were spending trillions on infrastructure, then fine. That is going to generate a positive return over time. This stuff isn’t that.
@maddiewhittle
This strikes me as correct.
It is a blocking and staging problem. Sex scenes are more important in female-skewing genres and Hollywood has no idea how to make them work for female viewers. This is compounded by the desire to retrofit male-skewing genres away from what appeals to…

I liked Byrne’s general take.
The difference was that Miller and Perez told story arcs, but Byrne basically just did a checklist consisting of six individual issues.
