Truman Capote made shit up for In Cold Blood too so there’s always been the salacious garbage element. I do think it’s gotten worse due to mass media though. Capote may have been a bullshitter but at least he didn’t lie to get murderers released from prison
@SwannMarcus89 True crime has always been popular, since mass media. Underappreciated theme in The Idiot, that theyre all obsessed with contemporary (real) true crime stories. Also my wife watches old Datelines. I suppose with podcasting and netflix the gatekeeping is majorly reduced though.

Oh, Making a Murderer was WAY worse than Serial. It’s just that thankfully Avery is so obviously guilty that even a slanted documentary couldn’t get that psychopath leniency Avery would be a straight up serial killer if he got released
@SwannMarcus89 She was much more fair than MaM imo But yeah it was near the start of the true crime kick

I’m surprised to learn Making a Murderer came out after the first season of Serial. I thought MaM was the origin of the bullshit conspiracy theory true crime epidemic, but Serial actually came out a year earlier and - unlike Making a Murderer - got a killer released from prison
@SwannMarcus89 I believe “serial” was right then too

Michelle McNamara was an actual journalist who based her research on a deep review of police files, which is objectively different from the modern true crime strategy of creating a conspiracy theory for views on Netflix True Crime was different before it became an industry
@SwannMarcus89 Michelle McNamara’s work did help solve the Golden State Killer case, and there may be other examples I don’t know about. But, for the most part, the true crime-entertainment complex is bad.

@SwannMarcus89 It was Serial, which is astonishingly awful the more one pokes at it. They literally took the defense file--hole-poking--& just adapted it to a series. Episode-by-episode. It's just the defense's strategy. Which is fine. . . for the defense. Not for journalists.

I can tweet 15 times in a month and make 3 times what premium costs me. I would be giving Elon free money from advertising if I didn’t have a blue check. I am fighting for the proletariat by “paying” for premium Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite

@SwannMarcus89 True Crime has gotten at least one man who most definitely strangled his girlfriend to death out of prison.

I’m so confused why leftists are this dumb sometimes. They try to own me for having a blue check. I have 60,000 followers. You’d have to be braindead to not have a blue check at that follower count. I did not tweet for 8 months and still made enough to pay for 90 years of premium

@SwannMarcus89 Sometimes it feels like the real conspiracy is to make Americans dumber through conspiracy podcasts and TV series. Ancient Aliens and UFO documentaries probably knocked another 5-10 IQ points off.

The “manufacturing defect” theory is so obviously wrong that no responsible documentary on the subject should include it unless they have people flat out explain why it’s absurd bullshit in a way even the most credulous viewer would understand

I thought this might have been what they were going for but they gave an insane amount of time to the conspiracy theory in the last episode despite it obviously not being true and there was minimal direct refutation I guarantee you the conspiracy aspect is what sold Netflix on
@SwannMarcus89 I got the sense they were showing all the various theories and It’s been a while since I saw it but I thought some of the talking heads pointed out the inconsistencies of that theory so it never caught on. Tylenol apparently did lie about cyanide being at the factory though.

This all started with “Making a Murderer.” The dude in that documentary is insanely guilty but it made a zillion dollars so now every true crime documentary has to contain a conspiracy theory you’d need to be brain damaged to believe

Does this guy think liberals support the Trump admin killing a high speed rail project? What is even the mechanism by which Marshall Steinbaum thinks Ezra Klein would oppose the construction of high speed rail constructed through a private-public partnership?

I watched the dumbest conspiracy theory bullshit true crime documentary of all time this weekend There’s a three part Netflix documentary on the Chicago Tylenol murders. If you watch the documentary you would come to the conclusion there’s a strong probability cyanide wound up

I guarantee you the gap in rates of violence has shrunk enormously post-Trump. The Democrats are increasingly the party of the educated while the GOP has more and more support from the degenerate dregs of society across racial lines Come on now
