@wishinguluv I'm 40 and at the bottom of a salary band, but my job is very easy compared to my friend who makes a dollar more an hour, is the same age, and had to carry 44 pieces of furniture including a power sofa, up a 5th floor walkup and assemble them today.

Early autism dx is accepting that this is as good as it gets. It’s about foreclosing your future and lowering your expectations, compensating for your condition by trying less hard. Late autism dx is about setting your standards and dreams so high and crashing and burning.

@ChazakielDoremi Yeah hybrid tea roses don't have a scent, look for the older ones with wider, flatter flowers. There are lots of wild roses in lawns in lower income neighborhoods and you can find lots of them this time of year.

@KellyannNavarre @citrine_spirit I was beat up by Conduct Disorder students in my segregated SpEd school for being Asian, on some days, and for being a “nerd” on other days . Autistics in general were prey. People were also bullied for being Haitian, Jewish, etc, so the racism was all-around.

@ijustwanabethe1 I was a special Ed kid and this just makes me feel scared of getting older. I wish we had a “it gets better” campaign for kids on the spectrum like they have in the Lgbt community. But I know now that it doesn’t get better.

@DatGirl_ICEY I've been saying this for years. Charter schools exist to get around the least restrictive environment rule of sped. Just like I was forced into segregated sped growing up, today's kids are forcibly segregated by being banned from the charters their NT friends get to go to.

@YINSHAKTI I have autism and am prone to all of those symptoms and have had a great time practicing magic. It’s helped, not hurt. I’ve taught and done secularized middle pillar rituals for people with severe autism and ADHD and they loved it.

@TereseMarieM The term Juggernaut, meaning a dangerous, giant, monster thing, actually comes from the Hindu saint Jagernnath, who represents joy I believe. People saw a parade with a giant statue of Jagernnath and got freaked out because they didn't understand.

@123itsmeMary It's winter, and things being shipped in are less hardy. This isn't a traditional dairying time either. Go for NY State grown foods that naturally occur at this climate. Cabbage, kale, pumpkin, potato, dry beans, hard cheese, cured meat. Cornmeal, and dent corn.

@grumpyshrubbery @library_fae I can’t mask and neither can my classmate. We’re both Segregated sped and childhood diagnosed. I’m treated more positively by police because I’m asian and my friend is treated as a threat for being black, tall, and perceived as strong.

@memeticsisyphus @MachoManatee When I was 35, my friends who weren't born in NYC drove to Westchester. I started humming banjo music and saying yee haw. Once I met someone from Vermont and automatically assumed he was a subsistence farmer like my relatives in a 3rd world country.

@motiblackart It depends on the school. I was beat up on the short bus by kids from other sped schools and undereducated in my sped school. When I was mainstreamed in college it was like a dream come true.

@FunFactsLulu I spent a year trying to live trap the mice that the alcoholics down the hall had attracted by putting food in the trash room. I was successful, but I had to clean poop caches in the craziest areas. I lost 2 lbs of good rice to pantry months in my current living situation.

@curablefury Autism diagnosis was forced on me at age 2 and I spent 13 years in segregated sped and being pummeled by the behavioral disorder kids. I saw my classmates lactate on Risperdal and get zombified by antipsychotics. Why shouldn't I talk about a full third of my life?

@MiriVinni @theSamConsidine So many folks I know in my income bracket (sub 50k) are on 3rd marriages and a lot of it simply has to do with personal coping mechanisms' inability to work with societal complexity overload. Like a stress strain curve of a brittle material.

Early autism dx is about missing out on schooling because of special Ed and taking calculus in your 30s. It’s about finally dreaming of driving at 50. Late dx is about being super successful and gifted early and making up with the special needs counseling journey later

@drdevonprice My autism dx was forced on me at age 2 and kept me out of the military in my 20s. It’s been nothing but destructive. I was beat up in sped and believed myself to be stupid my entire life because of it. I can’t even buy life insurance.

@bibicosplays In my segregated special Ed school, most of the kids were put on SSI since childhood and basically raised with this kind of surveillance rather than encouraged to work careers. It's so hard to describe how it's like to adult diagnosed autistics. Thanks for sharing.

@wasphyxiation A lot of it's laws. My traditional Chinese dad let me smoke cigs on holidays and told me to hit back harder. That's unacceptable in deep blue America. If I had a kid today they would be classified as a second generation CPS case and monitoring would start at the kid's birth.

@literElly I'm also from NYC. 5 lbs of potatoes are still $2 here. Sardines are still 1.25 a can. If I buy 20 lbs of rice, 5 lbs of onions, 10 lbs of carrots and 10 lbs of potatoes, both me and my roommate eat good for a month.

@ashleyann_atx What I recommend is to get a can of crushed tomatoes, stir fry some garlic and onions and to cook the crushed tomato with the garlic and onions. That way you get the flavor without the added price.

@Seasonal_Bitch Childhood diagnosed people like me who were often segregated sped are ineligible for the Bar and medical licensing for liability reasons. I have involuntary hospitalizations from childhood because postdocs wanted to write about me. That’s why I’m permbanned from TSA PreCheck.

@hollowearthterf Yes agreed 💯 I can never act, model, dance even at the volunteer or community level because my parents are poor. 20 years ago there were communities to support working class arts wannabes, like Myspace. They don't exist anymore. It's all for nepo babies.

@AutisticCoach_ I often discuss how it was viewed in East Asia historically. In my grandparents generation, autists who were special Ed level like me would've lived with their families their entire lives. Here in America in the 50s, we were institutionalized.

@YINSHAKTI One practice I recommend for kids with autism is a modified middle pillar, where blue light whooshes down from the top of the head and blasts gunk out of the chakras, then blows all the gunk out the bottom of the feet.

@AutisticCallum_ I was never told what I was punished for because I was labeled and segregated at such a young age. That's why I stopped having hobbies and worked hard to try to prove I deserved basic humanity like mainstream education, a job, and housing. I studied 4 hours a day at age 7.

@yumcoconutmilk I ate only dry rice, dry beans and occasional cabbage for 2 years during the pandemic. When I left the house to repair a router in the computer at work i was very excited by the dollar menu on the burger King app. It tasted like manna.

@magicianbrain I like the old Polynesian idea of having a carved hand touch map for sea navigation. It reminds me a lot of how some medieval Europeans used a book as a key to a memory palace instead of just as a book taken literally like we do today.
