Now that this thread has blown up, a common question is why does LG washing machine need WiFi?. Obviously for DLCs (Downloadable Laundry Cycles). First it was video games, then Teslas, now washing machines. I wouldn’t be surprised if washing machines start microtransactions.

For those looking for an update, data usage has dropped since I posted this and blocked the device on my router. Sorry if you were using my washing machine for bitcoin mining. But I'd gladly rent our the LPU (Laundry Processing Unit) by the hour.

@RubenKelevra So, I spent last night trying to figure out how to disconnect the WiFi on the washing machine. Once it’s configured, it won’t let you remove the WiFi config. Only change to another WiFi. Ended up blocking it on my router.

@Kensetsu6 @subhaminion I kid you not, LG has DLCs for their washing machine. I can download new wash cycles. First it was Call of Duty DLCs, now it’s LG Washing Machine DLCs. What’s next?

@AJMutschler That's the interesting thing. I believe that the washing machine was powered off at this time. It should automatically turn off after non-activity. What's interesting is that it was turned on and in use during the 2-3PM dip. Which is even more scary.

People have asked for an update on my LG Washing Machine saga. I'm happy to announce that for the last month of monitoring and analysis, the data usage by my washing machine has gone back to normal. The LG Engineering team has been a tremendous help in helping to debug this

@PoliticalMessi @hkarthik I’m going to give a maybe controversial advice. Go travel or do something that you enjoy. The reality of it is that the next year is going to suck. You will never have a lower opportunity cost to do something you enjoy.

As a follow up, it looks like this issue started on 1/4. What’s interesting is that there was traffic with Apple iMessage. I chalk this up to inaccuracy in the ASUS router tool … unless it was sending 🍆 pics of my laundry.

At some point down the road, you're going to make another change, test that that change worked but don't test that the rest of the code worked.

As this post has been incorrectly reported: Just to clarify the data usage is correctly attributed to the IP address used by the LG Washing Machine. I am monitoring the data usage more closely. What I was referencing in inaccuracy of the router is the attribution of 622 bytes.

@semil When I was at Google, just two engineers were working on Google Finance. It was neglected. I wouldn't be surprised if it was redesigned without understanding the consumer. This may be a top down effort to "modernize" the UI to Material Design rather than improve.

@GergelyOrosz @SubstackInc One hypothesis here is that x.99 is used for commodity items where you’re competing on price. Luxury goods are typically whole number to show quality. I can see that people are paying for Substack for quality content. Pricing it at x.99 conveys to buyers the lack of quality.

@rishmishra It’s all about CAC. You either lower CAC by building an interesting product (@chime @RobinhoodApp) or you solve CAC by extending a captive audience (@Facebook @google or @uber). It’s the same formula. Once you have that, the core fundamentals are the same but with a better UX.
