This is organized crime. We let these young men have free rein over the last decade in California with defund the police and they took it. Now they are organized and it’s going to get much worse.

Thanks to the team at @OutsidersFund for an awesome event. @austinmcchord bought a old Power plant and exploring it was awesome.

More than anything it appears to be a fear of looking bad and having the crowd attack you.

Obvious VC and their LPs are a huge driver of this as they hate funding startups that could have bad optics, and doing potentially illegal things never looks good.

Strangely, few founders are willing to take legal risk by pushing into areas of uncertain legality. Startups are a giant bundle of endless risk, yet they all seem to stick to embracing the same risks. You would think after Uber more folks would see the huge upsides.

Betting on the continuation of Swansons law (20% drop in price for each doubling of production ) seems pretty high probability now.

I am diving deep into the revolution happening with cheap solar power and batteries. Such a fascinating change. Energy has created some of the largest fortunes ever. Seems like it will again this time too.

A new proposal from @CMSgov under @DrOz wants to add catheters, ostomy & trach supplies to Medicare’s competitive bidding program. This is a bad idea and will worsen outcomes for seniors & Medicare recipients. My latest in @MedPageToday explains why ⬇️

This is one reason why SF has so many problems. Rich bored old people blocking everything.
This is what’s wrong with our permitting system:. A single NIMBY retiree can spend all her time suing to block wind & transmission projects from being built. Activists used these same rules to block nuclear projects in the 1970s. Now they’re being used against all clean energy.

A decade in for me- the vc game is fucking weird. So much love and effort for companies who eventually hit the wall… bottomless heartache. And then a couple squeak through the reapers inexplicably- power law pays for everything many times over. The feels are twisted.

A great retrospective. Worth a read.
What I wish I'd done differently with AbstractOps. All successful startups are alike; each failed startup is a failure in its own way -- Dostoevsky if he lived in 2023, probably. AbstractOps is the company I founded in 2019, and this is a retelling of the ups and downs over the

Just finished Barry Diller’s excellent book “Who Knew”. Highly recommend . He gave me pivotal encouragement to jump into being an entrepreneur when I first moved to sf and I will always be grateful. Hell of a guy.
