Many yearn for the "good old days" of the web. We could have those good old days back — or something even better — and if anything, it would be easier now than it ever was.
hi, me again. it's been six months.
bitcoin is down 56% from $38,000, when this person took out the original $15,000 loan
it's down 12% from $18,950, when this person took out the second $20,000 loan
@molly0xFFF
You'll be here to make fun at the outset of a risky (foolish) investment. But do you have the journalistic integrity to report with a follow up in six months if your ridicule was countered by a successful investment?
rightwingers including
@DrPaulGosar
have been spreading misinformation that the shooter in texas was a trans woman, using random photos they pulled from reddit. the person in the photos is currently posting on reddit in apparent horror that her photos were used in this way.
twitter not paying whitehats. what could go wrong?
this one just disclosed a vulnerability that would have allowed people to gain control of the twitter accounts of users who merely clicked malicious links
"Bankman-Fried’s mother audibly laughed several times when her son was referred to as a “fugitive” and his father occasionally put his fingers in his ears as if to drown out the sound of the proceedings."
that's pretty weird
lol. so the bored apes guys sued the guy who made copycat apes because he says bored apes are racist.
and now the bored apes guys are realizing they will have to testify under oath in the lawsuit they filed and are trying (and failing) to get out of it.
maybe twitter's URL censoring is so easily circumvented because all the software engineers still there are desperately trying to keep their lines of code metrics as high as possible
an up-and-coming crypto scam—er, project—has managed to dunk on cryptobros better than any satirist i've seen so far, with one of the most painful-to-watch youtube videos i've seen in a while. join me in hell as we watch this together:
From yesterday's exhibits in US v. Sam Bankman-Fried:
The prosecution shows that the "insurance fund" that FTX bragged about was fake, and just calculated by multiplying daily trading volume by a random number around 7500
An online pastor was charged in CO for a $1.3 million crypto scam. He's released a 9-minute-long video explaining that the Lord told him to sell a cryptocurrency with no clear exit", and spend some of the proceeds on "a home remodel the Lord told us to do".
Here's a supercut.
no URLs. no usernames without the URL. no bypassing restrictions on URLs (like writing example dot com). no posting images with usernames in them.
free speech!
raspberry pi hired a cop who used raspberry pis to build surveillance tech, and is now being flippant towards and blocking anyone who is less than jazzed about that decision
cool cool cool
super cool that all these companies have decided to make customers opt OUT of having their data sold for AI training purposes
"but no one would do it if it was opt-in!"
yeah, THAT IS THE PROBLEM
looking forward to kiwi farms going the way of 8chan, which many people have trouble even *finding* because it has to change domains and hosts so often (when it's even up on the clearnet). good fucking riddance
"i was on the toilet... thanks for the fact check"
just incredible to watch elon amplifying some of the most braindead conspiracy theories to try to harass another journalist
Kraken, a U.S.-based crypto exchange, has announced they'll be continuing to hire, and have announced a culture overhaul that promotes "diversity of thought" over "stereotypical team diversity measurements" and prohibits describing another's words as "racist" or "x-phobic". 🧵
have you seen tweets about stolen NFTs, crypto scams, or plain old bad ideas and thought "geez, how is that whole web3 thing going?"
check out my new project:
#web3
#crypto
pretty remarkable to see Coinbase making the argument that crypto is not like stocks, it's like baseball cards, American Girl dolls, or Beanie Babies
it's the future of finance! except when the SEC comes knocking, then it's just a harmless little toy, your honor
it's impossible for me to be a multimillionaire without robbing a bank, therefore i should be allowed to rob banks
(headline: "‘Impossible’ to create AI tools like ChatGPT without copyrighted material, OpenAI says")
happy 90 days after this tweet.
as i write this, bitcoin is priced at $25,000, below its $26,000 price point on march 17 and a mere $975,000 away from reaching the $1M price point as balaji predicted
I will take that bet.
You buy 1 BTC.
I will send $1M USD.
This is ~40:1 odds as 1 BTC is worth ~$26k.
The term is 90 days.
All we need is a mutually agreed custodian who will still be there to settle this in the event of digital dollar devaluation.
If someone knows how to do this…
finally took a look at that crypto encyclopedia that
@balajis
is a seed investor in, and which just raised a $40M series B led by a16z. it's a masterpiece.
someone just told me my "communist empire is falling to pieces" and i cannot emphasize enough that when you try to insult someone, it is crucial to not accidentally make them sound way cooler or more powerful than they actually are
The Wikimedia Foundation has decided to stop accepting cryptocurrency donations. The decision was made based on a community request that the WMF no longer accept crypto donations, which came out of a three-month-long discussion that wrapped up earlier this month.
listen, it's just a little difficult to take seriously some of these VCs and execs who are panicking about SVB under the guise of being worried about the employees and the little guys
in hindsight it may have been a mistake to google "gimp mask" to try to figure out how to do a layer mask in gimp, the free and open source equivalent of photoshop
so SBF and an attorney:
• falsified a "payment agreement" between FTX & Alameda
• backdated it by ~2y
• wet signed it to avoid DocuSign timestamp
• submitted it to an external auditor
• used it to obtain a $400M funding round
once again begging these people to talk to even just one woman before creating their system where people are supposed to record their daily whereabouts and movements to a blockchain
Sam Bankman-Fried has entered the fight over the $460M worth of Robinhood shares.
Part of his argument is that he needs them to be able to pay for his legal defense, else he might face irreparable harm.
“Conversely, the FTX Debtors face only the possibility of economic loss.”
now they're in a room in a casino full of people playing air hockey. everyone pictured appears to be male, except for a waitress who is being painfully hit on by a man in a pepe the frog shirt. this may be the most realistic part of the video.
when i talk about people putting money into crypto without understanding the risks, people sometimes suggest everyone knows it's risky.
> "I didn't know they could do this"
> "They cannot just disappear with our coins though right"
> "Is the money not insured up to an amount?"
i'm ostensibly here to focus on the crypto hellscape, but what's a critter to do when she gets a chance to see
@matthewmercer
and
@Marisha_Ray
talk about worldbuilding 🥰
Martin Shkreli figured out that I run
@web3isgreat
after I asked him a few questions about his new web3 definitely-not-a-pharmaceutical-company and ... I take it he's not a fan
Crypto is the first time computer science has created an artifact that only causes human misery, it is a manifestation of pure evil. Other fields like chemistry and physics have had to grapple with such constructions but this really is a first in computing.
