We need to fix the housing crisis, but this looks awful.
Why?
- It's just 20thC suburban sprawl
- No infrastructure, shops or amenities
- Nobody walking, wheeling or cycling
- Literally digital images of cars!
- No sign of ANY public transport
It's 2024. Let's do better.
Beautiful alliums and poppies, bees buzzing, people safe and happy. Is this Paris? Barcelona? Delft? No, this is London. Thrilled to launch Better Transport for Better Health for

Ah, good. You’ve ‘covered immigration’. Which bit exactly Sophie? The immigration of the Vikings to England? The immigration of the English to America? The immigration of monolinguists to Benidorm? Genuinely interested. Migration seems to have, you know, always covered history.
A loud minority will try to blame this on LTNs. Others will say it’s because the mighty
@SpursOfficial
are playing. The truth? These streets were built for people, horses & bikes. Cars ruin lives.
The Aldwych transformation with the daffodils in bloom! In a city with few central pedestrianised precincts, it is a thing of utter joy & beauty. As a born-and-bred Londoner, it’s hugely moving and inspiring to see 🌼👏 💚

A two hour journey on an

train. Three coaches, on a national route! Standing room only & no apologies for overcrowding. Just imagine all the other things you could get for £54.10…
Also THIS. Projections for Elizabeth Line & Dartmoor Line both far underestimated actual usage & exceptional economic benefits. We need to build public transport at 6 X the current rate to avoid the worst impacts of the climate emergency. This needs addressing urgently.
This is a problem facing every single new railway in the UK - this deeply biased and flawed analysis method stops most projects in their tracks.
This is DESPITE every rail project that does elbow its way into existence easily exceeding all projections of usage and benefits.

@CharlotteCGill
Well,
@MumsForLungs
might take issue with that. But really, it’s just not necessary to try to pit people against one another when lives and communities are at stake. Also, there’s ‘killing off the car industry’ (myth) or helping ease congestion for the benefit of all (reality).
@Western_Trad
Nice try. Perhaps compare like for like? The Brotherton Library at Leeds would be the logical comparison, and it’s much easier to work in than the Bodleian. Now how about comparing Leeds’ brilliant brutalism with the equivalent in Oxford…? Oh.

Claire, ‘malice against the working class’?! 😂 From the man who wrote ‘Chavs: the demonisation of the working class’! But of course! Please, think before you tweet...
@CharlotteCGill
Great to hear. People and businesses survive and thrive. No binary bickering dividing people into ‘motorists’ and ‘cyclists’. Just people. So important to remember for UK discussions about healthy solutions for individuals, communities and businesses.
Stunning photograph of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament in London during WWII. Taken from Westminster Bridge, you can see barrage balloons in the background.
Searingly brilliant & vital article from
@soniasodha

All a bit horse bolted now. They screened at airports, then used actual human beings with local awareness to speak to contacts of those who tested positive. Ensured they isolated & tested them. We left airports open, held up a badge and wittered about the Isle of Wight etc...
Very good summary from
@guardian
. Rail industry knows that Treasury simply has to get priorities sorted. Time to end the false ‘taxpayer/passenger’ dichotomy once and for all and prioritise rail. Everyone will benefit.
@dudleylad1066
Not really, considering a) Hislop embarrassed Neville for going to Qatar and b) the BBC is run by Robbie Gibb, an actual Tory. Amazing they manage any impartiality at all, frankly.
@cristop1506
@MichaelRosenYes
The app’s a farce. Jeremy Hunt’s consistently urged the UK to do proper targeted test and trace like Vietnam & South Korea, but we clumsily roll out this chaotic thing (eventually) which encourages excessive isolation and is arbritrary anyway (as the app is optional).

Saw you at East Finchley by the White Lion! Knew it was you but, as so often in Muswell Hill and environs, was tongue-tied… 🙈 The amble seemed hugely satisfying.
Ruling out completing HS2 flies in the face of expertise in the rail industry, risks making the UK an international laughing stock and is social, environmental and economic madness. Have an enquiry? Yes. Cancel? No.
@Keir_Starmer
will have to reconsider this statement.
Wonderful to see Covid-19 has been defeated in Haringey! Always ahead of the rest, the council have removed distancing barriers. 🙌 Surely in preparation for filtering, pavement widening, cycle paths and contraflows? Thank you

People want better buses, trains, trams, shared transport, and active travel support. People want communities to be healthy and connected. People do NOT want domestic flights to be even cheaper. Please RT & support
@CBTransport
. Let’s get them to reverse this decision.
It sounds like a bad April Fool's joke. During a climate crisis, Gov has cut the rate of Air Passenger Duty for domestic flights. This is terrible news for the environment.
The £130million in lost revenue could have funded a six-month extension to the £2 bus fare cap instead.
@Knowlesy83
Fantastic coverage of East and South-East (aligned with resistance, as pointed out like with today’s cycle lanes, in the affluent west). A clear demonstration that public transport provision is a social justice issue. Extremely illuminating - thanks Ben.
@jamesjpdrake
Following my recent return to London from France, it is much more chaotic in London, and the trains haven’t been organised at all. In France, alternate seats are blocked off, and all wear masks. Try again...
Thank you SO much to
@AllyPallySt
, dearly cherished friends who have become family to me, for such a beautiful send-off! Five unforgettable years. I will miss you, though with these presents it will be impossible to forget you!! 😄👏💚❤️💚❤️💚
They are. And this picture is just incredible. The crazed, patronising angle (is it a shower cap or a clown’s hat?), with the proto-Farage character bending bizarrely as they attempt to explain gross nonsense to a calm, dignified man. Speaks absolute volumes.
@harriepw
Oh, don’t be ridiculous. It’s straightforward - the Cummings government obviously know it looks good for them to do what ‘the people’ want, whereas giving in to the opposition makes them look much worse. Starmer’s doing brilliantly.
Thank you SO much to
@Yourallypally
for your brave action in closing AP Way at night. It is life-changing for

Hmm. This would be more compelling if it had a bit of context and balance. And patience. This guy literally has a ticket in his hand and, for all we know, was saving a few seconds. He may not have been, and this is a real issue, but it would be better if he was allowed to speak.

Not a competition, but 23rd March 2020. I’m sure he’s lovely when not having to be responsible, but afraid I wouldn’t trust Boris Johnson to run a bath, let alone a country.

This thread is HILARIOUS. Anyone would think there weren’t other cities or other happy, healthy human beings in the world using bikes AND cars. Amazing ruse that ‘London has been taken over by cyclists’! 🤦🏼♂️ Blinkered Brexit Britain? This is other level bizarre introversion.
This is just huge. Biggest change to central London streetscape since Livingstone made the superb choice to pedestrianise the top of Trafalgar Square (imagine that without now?!). Yet this also has FLOWERS. Lots.
@haringeycouncil
With the 🌳 and a picture of a lovely park doing what a park does for nature, health and wellbeing, I started reading this assuming it’d say something completely different. E.g. ‘To apologise for the destruction and disruption caused, we’re going to care for the park more’, but…
@krebscycling
@3milyLiu
@UKCycleChat
The thing is, cycling infrastructure just doesn’t exist in the UK. This is Finsbury Park. It’s relatively long, but cars park in it, people walk in it and it stops abruptly. Therefore it’s safer to cycle in the road. Until lanes are normalised and extensive, this’ll happen.
@E_N_O
Vandals. Short-sighted, unimaginative, ideological vandals. Decimating London and the UK for no reason whatsoever. Pathetic. It's well known that the board are out of their depth, so they need kicking out asap. If only we had a government who knew what music was...

Cabinet member for Neighbourhoods. This shop has just been converted, in plain sight, into a flat. Landlords are ‘Buckthorn Investments’. They care nothing for the neighbourhood, and would happily see it die. They’ll do the same to Dave. Please help?! 🙏

Meanwhile a few billion people people around the world spot the irony that this wonderfully informative ‘news’ comes from The Sun. Yes, the pretend newspaper which literally blamed the ‘British Public’ for Hillsborough… 🤦♂️ (You couldn’t make it up, but they frequently do, etc).
@LASwiftClassics
Good thing

today then, calling anyone who rides a bike ‘Stasi’… 🤦♂️ That might have been read by people. Perhaps someone should do something about that. 🤷🏼♂️

Considering impact of screens on brain health, would be interesting if ppl with expertise in trade descriptions & public health could suggest where line might be drawn. Tube stations/escalators too - theatre ads replaced with screens sad for London life and unhealthy.

Jeepers Julia, this is astonishing. I really can’t believe you’re asking this question. All three of these issues hugely affect students, and they are students, who are there to debate and learn. Why do you continue to attempt to inspire anger in ‘the people’?! Have some class.
