The reaction to women celebrating the @ForWomenScot legal victory only serves as a reminder that while the law is the law our culture remains dead-set against women who say no My final column for the Observer. (Read on for what's next...)

Totally. Complaining about your lack of agency isn't a very convincing narrative. And it just beds in fatalism amongst voters that politics as normal can't deliver.

This is another good e.g. of 'politics of can't' or 'politics in the role of narrator' - it's really damaging for the govt's prospects to engage in it, because all it does is legitimise the need to 'burn it all down' a sentiment ultimately benefiting parties like Reform/Greens

I'm grateful to the Sunday Times for publishing my letter on the constitutional role of the House of Lords, correcting the misleading impression created by an open letter signed by several former Cabinet Secretaries. https://t.co/sVAXDYhEeu

There is now a familiar phenomenon of crowds harassing and attacking (and sometimes murdering) Jews in their places of worship on holy days. It is a distinct problem requiring a targeted response.

It’s easy to see brown/black woman you disagree with as particularly bad, evil even. Depressingly I see a lot of this irrational sentiment amongst Westminster watchers who should know better. Anyway I wrote last year about dangers of underestimating her https://t.co/WCizBDKvg8

As Kemi Badenoch improves in her job, wonder whether we’ll ever talk about the subconscious racism I see towards brown & black women on the right amongst the left. I think on the centre/left there are irrationally strong feelings against Badenoch vis a vis other Tory politicians.

Sometimes I think the only thing Keir Starmer really cares about doing in his first term is assisted dying. And he’s not even honest enough to own it.

Halfway through this and I’m agreeing with every excoriating word David Runciman & Helen Thompson are saying about the government 😬. Well worth listening to. https://t.co/xlfwsvcQxa

And the dismissive attitude/tone towards subject experts like Baroness Finlay & Baroness Grey Thompson is really unattractive. I’ve noticed committed proponents are very emotional about the case for the bill so can’t countenance that critique might be valid.

Many Jewish events - here & elsewhere - are organised as follows. You sign up, but aren't told where it will take place until 24 hours before. The reason - to provide as little time as possible for would-be terrorists to scope out the venue & plan an attack. That's how we live.

I generally really like Double Jeopardy podcast. But their analysis of assisted dying is so biased & one-sided it’s v difficult to listen to. (Latest: could ā€œweepā€ at an amendment that people should have a pregnancy test before an assisted death!) https://t.co/YPaddlRA6R

I hadn't clocked that David Lammy wants to remove the automatic right of appeal for magistrate trials *as well as* increasing their sentencing powers to 18 months too (and it was only 6 months until a year ago). Deeply, deeply flawed and illiberal. https://t.co/soYs1lhmEK

The reason this point is so important - activists who oppose legal protections for women-only services and sports focus on toilets because it *works best for their argument*. For supposedly-impartial BBC presenters to take their framing as read is itself evidence of bias.

Yes, this was a poor set of questions from Laura Kuennssberg to EHRC chair Mary-Ann Stephenson (who was v good). Plus continuing obsession with toilets - echoing gender activist lines - to the exclusion of all other single-sex services/spaces/sports including prisons and refuges

Came across as very one-sided. A shame, as there are aspects of BBC coverage that have improved immeasurably in terms of balance since the focus on BBC lack of impartiality on gender and sex of recent weeks.

Very, very poor. What kind of question is ā€˜do you think trans women are women’? How about:- ā€˜Can you clear up the relationship between the guidance and the law? Can you clarify that the law is not dependent on the guidance?’ ā€˜What do you think of the delay?’ ā€˜Can you

A very somber show on Sky this morning, reacting to the distressing news of multiple fatalities after shooters attacked a Jewish Hanukkah gathering on Bondi Beach. My thoughts especially with Jewish friends today, a horrific attack in the context of rising levels of antisemitism.
