Software engineer with real-time embedded systems background, now working in finance. x86 assembly, c, c++, c#, python, wasm, rust, ai. Parody sometimes.

@ChShersh @OpenlyTuned I think I’d probably withdraw my application. Spending an hour of my time to hand code what is effectively an existing method call on an existing standard library class isn’t going to happen. If rather spend the hours looking for other roles.

@mariia__t It’s a good book. But I’d suggest treating it like a repository of wisdom rather than - what some do - a rule book. The bit that makes you a good software engineer is building the experience and perspective to appreciate when (and when not) to insist on using an approach,.

@ziademarcus That’s kind of the point. People won’t care about that. The same way the avg Mac user doesn’t care about BSD, and the average Android user doesn’t care about the Linux kernel. It’ll be normie o’clock.

@Hitchslap1 No. But a safe pill that would temporarily reduce my IQ by 30 points would be very handy.

@DaisyNyna Diet is the primary driver for weight gain and weight loss. Exercise is complimentary to diet when it comes to weight loss.

@KenMacLeod20 Yes of course. And that simply emphasises my point: Most Android users don’t care about the Linux kernel in their phones. Android is a normie consumer landscape.

@jam3scampbell There is no writing on the wall. The only people saying this are either selling something, grifting for engagement, or.lacking real world software development experience. The tools always change. The only software devs who lose their jobs to AI are the ones who refuse to use it.

@SuburbanTugTime Most of the Linux users I interact with seem to spend most of their time “doing Linux” and telling people they “do Linux”. Maybe it’s a developer thing but that’s the overriding impression I get.

@planticnap Yeah but. adults only behave like adults in front of children, at work, and at weddings and funerals. The rest of the time they're just big kids with no bed time.

@ChShersh @OpenlyTuned I would say why I am withdrawing. Have actually done this in the past and in most cases I’m invited to a face to face interview anyway. People think coding tests are a filter but they’re not. They just allow charlatans to google their way past the experienced.

@AdamRackis I like the idea that somebody can visit their parents and bring along their wife and children without having to sleep on the floor. Why else would somebody work hard all their life if not for family life? We really need to stop allowing profiteers the freedom to bleed us dry.

@jimnasyum @UpdatingOnRome At first I thought it was a joke about those Americans who think they’re Italian….

@BoringBiz_ I suspect most of it stems from the lack of clear progress paths. When they’re shut out of the housing market, live in a world that prioritises virtual social contact over direct social contact and they see work as a grinding to stay afloat, their experiences lack the same sense.

@IroncladDev “Here’s a one-line change that doesn’t affect the code but improves DX and should be fucking obvious”. “Please follow our slow and deliberate process for changing code”.

@drmeenalviz @NJ_Timothy Trying to shut down the conversation by screaming racism isn’t going to work anymore.

@2BitSalute @ThePrimeagen It’s fine as long as you review everything before hitting accept. The moment you hit “accept” the code is your responsibility, it’s no longer “copilot code”.

@MasteroftheTDS @Metaforest So in a world where kids board trains by running through brick walls, eat magical animated chocolate, talk to owls and keep a house elf, while admiring an orphan with a scar on his face who grew up in a cupboard… it’s the skin colour of one character that breaks your suspension.

@PolitlcsUK @BBCNews Seriously suspicious motives here. Asking that parliament and schools discuss a fiction at a time when parliament and the media are ignoring real issues that directly affect the direction of travel of the nation.

@sweatystartup @ZubyMusic This depends a lot on what he does day-to-day. He has 2 kids and a partner. There is wealth beyond money that comes from being fully present with the people in our lives. Nobody ever wished they spent less time with their kids but there are plenty who are so obsessed with money.

@DaveAtherton20 Why are you all taking this lying down? You were a different country when they reformed council tax in the 90s.

@CoderUday Over 50 here and going strong. Segued into leadership/management in my 30s, realised what a shit show that all is so returned to a SWE role before 40. Friends and colleagues over 40 are either same as me, or in leadership, management, security and C-level roles now.

@helenmallam Funny thing is, if you look at the crown estate's net tax contribution you'll realise that 52% of UK population (non-net contributors) are effectively subsidised by the crown.

@robkroese @DanielW_Kiwi It’s a weird experience doing anything over 26C in the UK. Their lack of any warm weather infrastructure makes it an unbearable experience. I live in Australia and I’ll take 45C here over any UK heatwave.

Where did we go wrong? Why is the industry full of people who think that coding is some sort of elite sport. It’s just plumbing with bits. Some people plumb toilets, some people plumb factories, some people plumb palaces, some people plumb war ships. The high horse coder should.
I'll die on this hill:.If you're an engineer who writes code regularly and a little LeetCode interview is scary to you, you aren't cracked enough.

@CharlotteCGill Breakfast clubs aren't the reason you can't afford to have kids. Wage stagnation caused by the uniparty pandering to the insatiable needs of the profiteers at the detriment of nation building is one major cause. Blaming poorer people is a diversion.

@kellabyte It’s like living in two different worlds. The corporate .NET environments are full of unnecessary complexity. It’s such a shame as the language and overall ecosystem is so good and lends itself well to building for quality and simplicity in the right hands.

@robprogressive Come to Australia. Lots of opportunities here. And if you fail you can buy a homestead in woop woop, enjoy a few stubbies with your winnie blues, and bask in the sunshine.
