Indonesia has to be the least culturally relevant country relative to its size. 4th most populated in the world, biggest Muslim nation, huge archipelago, but what is it really known for? Palm oil? A tsunami in 2004? Huge country just chilling there with no bearing on the world.
It's no more well known about than it's South-East Asian counterparts (Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand etc.) despite being way bigger, no good at any of the big sports, not a very influential diaspora (as far as I know). Not to throw shade or anything, it's just odd.
Incredible how we perfected suburban housing 150 years ago then just said nah fuck that and now we're stuck with cultural deserts under colorbond roofs.
Sydney residents: "Sydney is bloody boring, obscenely expensive and a pain to navigate!" *taps on opal card without blinking*
Melbourne residents: "I love our trams! I love our trains! I'm such a gunzel! Glory to Victoria!" *fare evades*
@SirJohnSamsa
You're saying this as if it would be the same for other other non-western countries. It's not. There are plenty of non-white, non-english speaking, non-western countries that are well known on the global stage. Indonesia should be one of them, but for whatever reason isn't.
How is "Bris Vegas" such a popular nickname? It's not even a good pun. Bristanbul, Brisalona, Brisburg, all better nicknames that I just made up on the spot.
@1854plus1984
Yeah there's definitely a ton of culture there. But there are other countries of similar size and cultural diversity that are far more well known about, Brazil the most obvious example.
Being good at football or even something like cricket or the Olympics would go a long way.
Unironically love that Australia's most well known landmark is a bold and beautiful piece of postmodernism and not just another Victorian era railway station or post office.
Following the success of my Bris Vegas tweet, I've been trying to come up with other nicknames for Australian cities. Some of the ones I like:
- Johannesperth
- Geelongyang
- Riyadelaide
@SirJohnSamsa
Brazil, Argentina, Nigeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan, India, China. Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Phillipines, Singapore all comparable too. Even smaller countries like Jamaica and Cuba have a ton of cultural exports.
@ThreetothePower
Not sure about that new capital city l project but I think they've built some high speed rail which is cool.
If they could get a bigger foothold on global trade that would be huge, unfortunately Singapore kinda snatched that from them.
The year is 2050. Sydney has built 7 new metro lines, has more riders on its light rail system than Melbourne's famous tram network, upzoned massively, and is a mode-share paradise. Melbournians meanwhile are still waiting for SRL Stage 1 to open.
Thanks whoever is responsible for there now being zero public transport to/from Launceston Airport after the shuttle bus stopped operating.
Had to take a bus to Breadalbane and walk the remaining few km's.

Of ALL the criticisms you can make about these developments (there's so many) a lack of tree cover is not a reasonable one.
They're new developments, of course the tree cover is minimal, they haven't had time to grow yet.
Please focus on real complaints that have real solutions.
Hilarious how some people protest new rail lines in their neighbourhood because they think it will damage their property values when it actually does the complete opposite.
New data shows Sydney's Metro rail lines are bringing more than quick commutes to our suburbs they're also bringing soaring property prices. A deep dive into sales data shows suburbs with Metro stops are now outperforming those which missed out.
Are there actually any ugly cities in Australia?
Most places have at least a great built environment (most capitals, historic inland cities), or a great natural setting (coastal areas especially). Plenty have both.
Any big places that have neither? Do we have any true eyesores?
Places I'll visit next time I'm in Melbourne:
- Clifton Hill Maccas
- Montague St bridge
- Fitzroy Garage Party street
"What about the MCG? National Gallery? Museum?". Please. Only real cultural landmarks make my list.
Can Max just commit to a stance on the supply side aspect of the housing crisis already? He seems to flip flop on his arguments depending on who he's trying to win a debate over.
Max Chandler-Mather: “It’s just not true”
Karvelas: “What’s not true”
MCM: “That planning is the reason houses are so expensive”
Karvelas: “It’s part of the reason”
MCM: “No it’s not. It’s just not.”

The US has it right with their college sport spectacles.
I wanna see UNSW vs Monash, under the lights, packed out stadium yelling cunts at the opposition, flames, bands, tifos, entrance music, the whole lot. Any sport, I don't care. Make it happen.
I volunteer my home town of Launceston to be Australia's new regional megacity, as suggested by the NIMBYs.
All those immigrants and families that wanted to live in Sydney? We've upzoned South Launceston and have started building high speed rail to Hobart.
You're Tasmanian now.
@gaslightyourmom
I want a big house on a big property in a nice neighbourhood of a big city that's well located with local amenities and high quality services that isn't too expensive. Is that too much to ask?

Having a big diaspora helps heaps. It means even tiny places like Jamaica can still have a huge cultural presence despite a very small population within the country itself.
Inefficient land use, lack of footpaths, lack of cycling infrastructure, lack of local business, poor public transport, dark roofs adding to the urban heat island effect, social isolation. Give it 10 years and the tree cover will be one of the few nice things about these places.
Jeremy Rockliff is on the phone right now negotiating deals to get the cross bench on his side, whilst Labor and Rebecca White concede defeat before even entertaining the idea of working with a cross bench, one which is probably closer to their side politically than the Libs.
Imagine if Kowloon Walled City was still around and YouTubers milked it for content.
"I survived 24 hours in Kowloon Walled City?!"
"Kowloon Walled city hide & seek challenge (We got arrested?!)!"
"Do NOT go to Kowloon Walled city at 3am!"
@redbytesdaily
I'm more so talking about the architecture, density and urban value the homes bring. Obviously a modern house will have more modern amenities. Doesn't mean we can't build modern, nice looking terraces with up to date features.
There's a club in the German 5th tier named after Tasmania. SV Tasmania Berlin, who's predecessor was SC Tasmania 1900 Berlin, originally adopted the name because the founders had planned to move to the state. If I ever make it to 🇩🇪, going to a game is 1st on the bucket list.
Geelongyang I think is the funniest as a spin on Pyongyang, North Korea. But Johannesperth is probably the most fitting joke given the South African population in WA.
@jeremyrockliff
Not yet bro. Still gotta beg a few independents and JLN members over the phone to side with you, despite your speech basically alienating them as insignificant.
@ShezzaIsBack
The line-up is actually stacked, depth akin to Spain's 2008-2012 midfield. Forget the Bayern thrashings and Wenger In/Out debates, lockdown AFTV is the real prime.
Anger at King Charles' plan to build an 'ideal town' in Kent: Locals lash out at Duchy of Cornwall over proposals for 2,500 homes on 320 acres of farmland which they fear will 'swallow up historic villages into an urban mass'

Maybe, at least in regards to some types of cultural exports (sport, recent history, economy, immigration).
I still think Indonesia underperforms with the cards it was given, but you do make a fair point.
@itsrosaflorence
For real. Just come up with a nice design template, pre cast everything, build it on mass and bring down costs through economies of scale.
People don't tend to criticise cities where "everything looks the same" if that 'same' looks nice. Paris the most obvious example.
It really can't be understated how not difficult it is to design nice looking mass housing. A building doesn't have to be drenched in ornamentation to be of architectural merit, nor does it's surface need to be "broken up" with random protruding elements.
Sometimes I think maybe my parochial posting is a bit forced and possibly a tad embarrassing for other Tasmanians.
Then I remember that this account exists and my posting is nothing compared to it.
A couple holidaying in Tasmania's remote north-west have captured a wombat foraging in the ocean. The footage has surprised wombat experts, who say the behaviour is highly unusual.
You think neighbourhoods just spawn with fully grown trees like the first pic here? No. The latter is what that neighbourhood looked like when it was first built.
Tasmania is ripe for some young online personality to run a joke election campaign.
Figure out a gimmick that voters like or find funny, go big on social media marketing, show up to events.
With Hare-Clark tomfoolery and now 35 seats in parliament, you might have a good shot.
Every Jeremy Rockliff policy announcement is either like "We're gonna build Disneyland and make entry free for everyone!" or "We're bringing back the death penalty."
No inbetween.
