It's no more well known about than it's South-East Asian counterparts (Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand etc.) despite being way bigger, no good at any of the big sports, not a very influential diaspora (as far as I know). Not to throw shade or anything, it's just odd.
Indonesia has to be the least culturally relevant country relative to its size. 4th most populated in the world, biggest Muslim nation, huge archipelago, but what is it really known for? Palm oil? A tsunami in 2004? Huge country just chilling there with no bearing on the world.
@GunnerTas
It’s not particularly centralised, disparate groups, loose affiliations. So doesn’t really do power projection. It’s also very poor in large parts.
@redrabbleroz
Having a big diaspora helps heaps. It means even tiny places like Jamaica can still have a huge cultural presence despite a very small population within the country itself.
@GunnerTas
One problem is that the diaspora are majority of ethnic Chinese origin ... The ones I've met in Australia have all talked about how Chinese Indonesians are discriminated against in Indonesia and as a result they don't hold ethnic Indonesian culture in high regard ...
@GunnerTas
I've had Thai food plenty of times and we can thank the Philippines for It's the Nutshack, and Vietnam had the whole US invasion thing, but also Pho, but I only met two Indonesian people in my entire life
@GunnerTas
Actually, their product(+islands) are pretty well known. People just don't link it to Indonesia. It also doesn't help that Indonesia and India have a similar name. Indonesia is a non-block country, so the Western world don't really interact with Indonesia.
@GunnerTas
My brother, we were the best in badminton for decades and one of our diaspora had a key role in the team that invented AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine. 🤷🏻♂️
@GunnerTas
indonesia is quite prominent in badminton but badminton is relatively not as popular in the west
also there isnt a lot of indo diasporas bc there wasnt a historic event that caused a wave of migration (eg china, vietnam) + people often mistaken us for chinese/filipinos LMFAO
@GunnerTas
I love Indonesia. If you’d been there you’d know that was in the past. You’d turn bullish. Indonesia is rising in nearly all aspects you mentioned.
@GunnerTas
facts lol, look viet with their pho, ph with their jollibee, thai with their mango sticky rice, the closest thing that indonesian food reach the global market is indomie ngl
