Israelis are going through all the grief that we could read in memoirs of Germans in the 1930s, while Germans keep pretending like everything is fine in Israel and all the depravity against Palestinians on display is justified.
It isn't. All decent people know it's not.
1/ Just sadness and mind-numbing grief today, of the most selfish kind. Sadness for my country and my society, sick and hollowed out, but still my home, my language, my past and future. Anger and shame are always there, but today it is sadness and the grief for the win. --->
I have not merely told you so, I couldn't shut up about it for years.
It's an EV with sodium ion batteries. The capacity of 25 kWh is not huge, but the regular capacity of this model with lithium is either 20 kWh or 31 kWh.
But this one is faster charging and better in winter.
CATL presents their 500 Wh/kg solid state batteries. (Finally found the press release. It was ... "hidden" on their official website.😅)
I'd like to know what the anode chemistry is. (Lithium metal or silicon. If we had the voltage, we'd know...)
CATLs announcements this week (and since last year) are easily more important than anything happening in spaceflight these days. New battery packs, sodium ion batteries and high density cells will change our life here on Earth.
Landing people on Mars would be just a neat trick.
@PhillipsPOBrien
I think people forget (or never knew, I sure didn't until not too long ago) that the Battle of Verdun was completely one-sided ... the attacker always lost much more than the defender. It's just that both sides were taking turns in attacking the other side.
@SciGuySpace
Didn't they just lose their *checks notes* New Shepard senior vice president, lead avionics software engineer and chief of mission assurance?
The pack energy density of 120 Wh/kg (cells have 140Wh/kg) is just a sliver below the 2020 Tesla Model 3 LFP pack, which had 125 Wh/kg.
If you build the same 54 kWh pack with sodium, it would weigh 450kg, just 18 kg more than the LFP pack. But it can charge to 80% in 15 minutes.
And there we go. First EVs to use CATLs sodium ion batteries.
It's not surprising. The energy density (both mass and volume) is comparable to 2021 Tesla Model 3 LFP battery packs.
Our first sodium-ion battery will power the Chery EV models. The award-winning technology breaks the bottleneck of limited raw materials and provides a cost-effective solution.

Tesla fans will have to be strong over this one. But the 4680, as a cylindrical cell, simply isn't the most volume or weight efficient form factor. It wastes space and mass. It remains to be seen if increased stiffness of the 4680 is enough of an advantage.
I found some more details on the Hina sodium ion batteries and the E10X EV and its battery pack in which they are used. The pack (which doesn't seem to cool its 660 individual cells) needs 15 min to charge 30-80% and 20 min for 10-80%.

OHB is selling its 57% stake in Rocketfactory Augsburg. I think it's fair to say that the company is well on its way out. (It was the pet project of OHB boss Marco Fuchs, as I've been told independently by several company insiders over the years.)
(vgl. Richard Branson)
I just realized that Sid Meier's first Civilisation in 1991 didn't have solar power plants. They were only added as an end-game technology in Civilisation II in 1996. Sim City (1987) also doesn't have them, but Sim City 2000 had them in 1993.
We live in once unimaginable future.
You can now buy sodium ion batteries on Alibaba from small, completely unknown companies. Anything from 18650 to 46145 cylindrical to large 173*71*204mm prismatic cells. Sold for ~$120-$140 per kWh. They do seem to ship and actually arrive, even in Germany.
@SciGuySpace
It's a major engineering failure. Either of the valves or the weather-proofing of the starsh^h^h^liner. Blaming it on the weather is actually worse than blaming it on the valves ..
@AJ_FI
Don't forget that this was actually first done by JAXA with the IKAROS solar sail test (which launched alongside the venus probe Akatsuke). That's how we got this picture from somewhere between here and Venus.
Just $37/kWh material cost for LFP batteries. Lithium, graphite, copper and the processing costs for sub-micron sized LFP are probably a substantial part of that.
Lithium ion battery px continue to plunge as BOM for LFP battery has dropped to 266 RMB/kwh
Sub $50/kwh battery should be common
Global production of LFP & NCM was abt 120Gwh in May
About 40Gwh installed in Chinese EVs, so significant qty will be for ESS as renewable buildup
LFP cells 10 years ago were worse than Sodium Ion Batteries today.
That 146 Wh/kg is for a light pouch cell in plastic foil. The sodium cells have a metal housing.
The only real miss today was failure to reignite the Raptor engines (as failures in Super Heavy and not attempted in Starship), but this did not cause any disruption in the rest of the test program. So, it's basically a success. You can learn much less from fireballs.
Starship burnt up. Super Heavy crashed. It’s easy to see failure. If you want, go ahead. But this is failing forward at its finest. One of SpaceX’s secret sauces is an acceptance of failure as a means to an end. We are much nearer that end, rapid and fully reusable launch, today.

Sodium ion batteries (2020 to today):
1)Just a theory
2)They work, but nobody will invest in them
3)Only small companies invest in them
4)You can't trust Chinese companies like CATL
5)You can't use them in EVs
Now:
They build these huge factories, but utilization rate is so low!
BYD still looks the way people only talk about Tesla. It's astonishing what happens when you actually serve customers needs, instead of stipulating that your products are the best, don't need changing and if you can't afford them, that's your fault.

In 2030, todays predictions by academia - that lithium-ion batteries cannot be replaced as an energy source for electric vehicles - will look just as ridiculous as academic predictions in 2010 saying that lithium-ion batteries could never reach $100/kWh.
@LionHirth
That's not quite true. About 13 billion tons of material are extracted to get those 2.6 billion tons of iron ore. (Taken from the supplement of: )
Note that copper and gold(!) are causing another ~10 billion tons each as well.
CATL officially presents the Qilin battery (aka Kirin in japanese).
Blade-like cells, cooled all around, rather than just the bottom. Much tighter integration and higher volumetric density compared to 4680 cells (cylinders always waste packing space)

Pretty much. Mars Express and Venus Express were modified copies of Rosetta, which cost about 1bn Euro. Mars express was, I believe, ~150 million Euro and Venus Express just 85 million (without launch cost, of course)

@Leon_Zippel
CATL released a PR video for their Qilin pack. Suitably monumental. 72% pack efficiency compared to the 40-45% or so in recent years is a serious achievement. Unless there are major quality issues, this will shake up the industry as much as the first CTP.
@DJSnM
Makes me wonder why they don't use heat pumps to increase the temperature. It will add heat to be rejected, but should increase heat rejection much more. (Could help to run instruments generating more heat when heat pumps are running. Needs a lot of redundancy though.)

Why do people insist on using sub-linear growth for battery production? Why constant shares or LFP? Why are all new chemistries a decade away?
Have you learned nothing from the past 10 years?

I think that "disabled vehicle" is a much better and clearer way to communicate the concept of a "destroyed vehicle" through "mobility kill".
It really always helps to keep the jargon out.
The huge trouble I see with lots of people is that they have such astonishingly bad knee-jerk takes against Elon Musk, that won't stand up to any deeper scrutiny (because they just don't like him) that they lose all standing to actually deliver believable and necessary criticism.
@CarloMasala1

Europe cannot afford *one* Stéphane Israël. He has been undermining and destroying European spaceflight with his illusionary ambition to "keep" Europe at the top of spaceflight a decade after we have fallen far behind. We need leaders who are not afraid of unflattering realities.
Eigentlich muss man darüber weinen.
After almost 2 years of researching the current state of sodium-ion batteries it is fascinating to see the hot-takes of industry experts and scientists alike, who never had more than a passing look at sodium-ion-batteries until suddenly people started asking them because of CATL.
@MaxFichtner
Somewhat distorted, because he divides energy consumption by mass of vehicle and ignores aerodynamics. Hence the poor performance of Renault Zoe. Teslas are aero-efficient, but heavy, which makes this graph biased towards Teslas (which are still good).
240 Wh/kg and 525 Wh/l on cell level, 190 Wh/kg and 400 Wh/l on pack level. The packing efficiency is finally reaching sane levels. (Btw. standard range Teslas have less than 200 Wh/l on pack level.)
Elektrolyte seems to be a polymer to compensate the inevitable volume changes of the anode material (whatever it is they are using).
It's neither a gas nor a liquid, therefore "condensed matter physics".
I really wished CATL was less cryptic in their descriptions.
And that's why sodium ion batteries must become the mainstay of the battery industry. No lithium, no cobalt, no nickel, no copper.
They need no rare metal ores that must be mined at low concentration, causing all this destruction. And they are good enough for the job.
To manufacture each EV battery, you must process
25,000 pounds of brine for the lithium
30,000 pounds of ore for the cobalt
5,000 pounds of ore for the nickel, 25,000 pounds of ore for copper
Diging up 500,000 pounds of the earth's crust
For just - one - battery.
New sodium ion batteries everywhere, from companies you (or at least I) never heard of.
Don't tell me it's just a fad. With the price gouging of the lithium industry, this is the only viable battery technology going forward where cost and reliability of supply are important.
In CIBF, I felt a relatively cautious attitude of quite a few Chinese

It's worth considering that the problems of landing a Falcon 9 almost exclusive came down to a) insufficient roll-control due to lack of fins and b) the necessity of dialing-in the hover-slam landing due to lack of sufficiently deep throttling of the Merlin 1D engines.

Was soll das?
That $74/kWh figure includes (with the discount!) about $20/kWh worth of lithium carbonate (about 700 grams).
Which should tell you how cheap it has become to make battery cells these days.
Now imagine not needing lithium, lithium electrolyte salts, graphite and copper.
