I'm angry! My good friend and the dean of Theology at Point Loma Nazarene was fired because he tried to protect a colleague who is LGBTQ+ affirming. Not only do I disagree with the university's view on Queer matters, but Mark's punishment doesn't fit his "crime." It's wrong!
If you hear me say, "I'm praying for Ukraine," I DON'T mean I'm crossing my fingers and hoping God singlehandedly intervenes. It means I'm asking for insights and ideas from God on how I might be part of the solution.
I'm happy to announce the publication of a huge collection of essays called Why the Church of the Nazarene Should be Fully LGBTQ+ Affirming. In my view, this book is an expression of love, and God is pleased by its publication!
This Religion News Service story does a pretty good job of describing the guilty verdict at my queer church trial. It even quotes a bit from the written verdict.
My friend and doctoral advisor, David Ray Griffin, died. He shaped my theology in ways I'm only now realizing. I am deeply indebted to him! In this photo, I pose with David and his doctoral advisor and our mutual teacher, John Cobb.
I’m leaving General Assembly feeling great about the people I met and conversations I shared. The highlight was a meet-up with queer and ally Nazarenes organized by Keegan Osinski and Randy Hartman.
@keegzzz
I'm pumped about the release of this book. And pumped that it's already
#1
in a half dozen Amazon categories. But I'm most excited that these ideas will help people!
I parked last night and prepared to hike to a wild horse herd. But I discovered I'd left my camera at home! I decided to make the hike, enjoy nature, talk to the horses if I found them, and use my iPhone instead. Here's my favorite photo...
I hiked 30+ miles the last few days to photograph this old rock homestead. Fortunately, bad weather hit when I was making the photo (hail, rain, and strong winds). I like the result...
I hiked out to wild horses in the Owyhees this afternoon. After trotting away at first, they turned and tried their usual tactic: charging to intimidate me. I stood my ground and made this photo.
I've been reading 100+ testimonials of people who are or have deconstructed. Ten major reasons for deconstructing have emerged, and
@trippfuller
and I are writing a book about those reasons. The majority of deconstructing centers around bad ideas about God.
Jurgen Moltmann turned 95 this year. John Cobb turned 96. Both are still sharp mentally. I've been thinking the two should do a pay-per-view theological conversation when they reach 100. I'd pay to watch that!
I'm happy to announce I'm now directing a new doctoral program in open and relational theology. This program is a joint venture between the Center for Open and Relational Theology and Northwind Theological Seminary. Here's a link with info...
Tripp Fuller and I are doing a podcast series on the Apostle's Creed in the 21st century. We speak from an open and relational perspective. The series starts in January. I like the promo graphic
@trippfuller
constructed!
I decided to drive to SoCal last week to attend various conferences. I wanted to experience some out-of-the-way landscapes and look for animals. I spotted these big horn sheep near Walker Lake in Nevada. So I pulled over and made photos, talking with them a bit.
I fulfilled a lifelong goal today: I photographed a mountain lion! I came upon the queen with two cubs. The cubs disappeared over the ridge before I could photograph them. But I made a sequence of photos of their mother.
@brianmclaren
I'm preparing myself for post-election mayhem and violence. I aim to be an instrument of peace and love not a tool of revenge or violence. It may strike some as naive, but I'm preparing to act as I imagine Jesus might after a contentious 21st-century election.
I have a big announcement to make next month, but I thought I'd alert ebook readers that my book, Open and Relational Theology is now available for pre-order...
Greg Boyd sent a nice endorsement for my new book. Here's an excerpt I especially like: "Open and Relational Theology is proof that deep and complex theological and philosophical issues can be talked about in ways that laypeople can easily grasp." Thanks,
@greg_boyd
!
I'm thrilled to announce the release of God After Deconstruction, a book by Tripp Fuller and me! We explore nine reasons people deconstruct, affirm those reasons, and then offer`an open and relational view of God. Consider getting a copy!
I took advantage of the warm day yesterday and hiked. Here's my favorite photo from my time. I wanted to play the yellows from the tumbleweeds with the yellow in the clouds...
I'd like to alert you to this series of events held next week, February 14, and hosted by my friends and podcast hosts
@trippfuller
and
@masonmennenga
...
I took a hike in the Owyhees this evening and encountered this Jackrabbit. After talking to him for some time, I was able to move within 15 feet to make this photo.
I have sad news: our friend, Terry Fretheim, has died. Terry was professor of old testament Theology at Luther seminary and wrote excellent books on open and relational theology. I consider him a giant in biblical studies and theology. He will be missed!
I went on a hike after Easter lunch. I started thinking about the last few months and how much fun I’ve had with Tripp Fuller doing the Becoming Christian podcast series. I was a little more tuned in to crucifixion and resurrection issues because of it. Thanks,
@trippfuller
!
This line from Brian McLaren’s new book is going in my Sunday sermon: “Since many Christians see God as an absolute authoritarian, we shouldn’t be surprised when they prefer authoritarian political leaders to democratic ones.”
@brianmclaren
Because of my theology, I turned down this request: “The Air Force wants to give me the vaccine. I want a religious waver to not receive the shot. Would you provide a statement supporting my belief this shot changes God’s perfect creation and prevents me from entering heaven?”
Congrats to my daughter Sydnee and her husband Logan on the birth of their daughter and our first grandchild! Graysen Ruth Freiburghaus was 6 lbs 6 oz, 19.5 in., and born Saturday, October 13, 2018.
I lectured today at the European Society for the Study of Science and Theology. My lecture title: “Can God Rescue Us from Climate Change?” I thank
@trippfuller
for making this photo.
I left Glacier Nat. Park after 4 days on the trail. The rain got the best of me. On my hike out, I turned to make this shot of the mountains I had planned to hike that day...
Today's Trump virus announcement points to prayer issues I've been wrestling with: 1) How do I pray for a leader with whom I greatly disagree? 2) What words do I use when praying for the sick -- assuming God WANTS to heal everyone but CAN'T control anyone or anything?
I was unsuccessful this weekend in my attempt to hike down to the Bruneau River. I cliffed out. But I found a cave near the cliff's edge to put my tent. Here's an evening photo of my spot and my view when I awoke the next morning.
My friend John Polkinghorne died. I worked with John on several projects, including The Polkinghorne Reader, a collection of favorite personal writings. There will be a private funeral now and a larger event once the pandemic has lessened.
I'm coediting a book called, "Love Does Not Control: Therapists, Psychologists, and Counselors Explore Uncontrolling Love." We're choosing the book cover, and we thought we'd get wider feedback. Which cover do you like best?
I've posted a video response to the charges and pending trial for my being queer affirming.
Share this publicly or privately with those you think might be encouraged.
In 10 days, I'm lecturing at the Parliament of World Religions. I'm introducing Open and Relational Theology and noting those from various traditions (e.g., Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Bahai, Indigenous, etc.) who embrace it. Here's the slide that notes a few ORT advocates...
I came upon an abandoned farm and homestead today on my hike. A couple of owls lived in the trees around the buildings. This one kept an eye on me as I explored the crumbling homes...
Happy 90th birthday to my friend John Polkinghorne! John now lives in a home for the elderly needing extra care. His life and thought have been helpful to me and so many!
Steve McCormick is among the many leading theologians writing for the new book, Why the Church of the Nazarene Should be Fully LGBTQ+ Affirming. "See No One as 'Other'" is a powerful essay from a brilliant thinker!
Phoebe and Matt were my hosts at the Methodist tent
@greenbelt
. We talked about deconstruction, and we had a great conversation with the audience in the packed tent!
I awoke Wednesday morning in the Lemhi Mountains with 5 inches of snow on my tent. I had plans to hike over a pass, but the snow canceled them. I hiked out. On my drive to civilization, I found a hillside with pronghorn mothers and fawns. I made this photo while watching them...
I returned from hiking to find news that The Uncontrolling Love of God is now in its 6th printing! Look for an Audible audiobook version in November...
