I don’t
believe in the clean break;
I believe in the compound fracture
served with a sauce of dirty regret,
I believe in saying it all
and taking it all back
and saying it again for good measure

like wheeling birds.
1/ The assassination by Israel of the three sons and three grandsons of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh delivers a lesson in the disastrous mechanics of dehumanization. More than everything, it demonstrates how dehumanization functions as a double-edged sword. --->
1/ Run of the mill Israelis don't talk about the starvation of Gaza. There is a lot of chatter about how Hamas is responsible for the Gazans' plight. There is no mercy for the Gazans who die in the daily bombings and bombardments. Even acknowledgement is rare. --->
1/ A personal note. I am an Israeli Jew. I have been consistently critical of my country's policies and actions with regard to its occupation of Palestinian territories and its punitive war in Gaza. Doing so, I remain an Israeli Jew. I have no other country or place. --->
1/ Today is an angry day. I'm angry at how easy it is for my country to continue shedding Palestinian blood. Israel continues to bomb Rafah, killing dozens of innocents every day while pretending it is mulling over the question of "operating" and shedding even more blood. --->
1/ Why are Israelis dazed and confused? Because Iran demonstrated instrumental rationality. The Iranians, possessing limited capabilities, mounted an operation both psychological and kinetic. They ties Israel in knots for over a week. Then they fired. --->
1/ A truly, literally unbelievable post. Claiming that not a single civilian was killed by the IDF "operation" is not even gaslighting. Israel (and this is the opposition, mind you) is collectively high on its own supply. Even were one to disregard the testimonies; --->
Amazing battlefield achievement.
The IDF has just completed a 2 week operation on a Hamas command center that Hamas embedded within the Shifa Medical Center.
Hamas used staff and patients as human shields in order to cause maximum civilian casualties as to create more…
1/ Please take the time to read this incredible piece of investigative reporting. I think it is the best demonstration of the Israeli mindset I have seen and it says a lot about the need to revisit the definition of Genocide: --->
1/ Hebrew is deserting me. Reading about Gaza in the Hebrew media, talking to people about Gaza, I see and hear words the meaning of which I used to know, but realize that this meaning has changed utterly. It is self-defeating to write about Hebrew in English, but here goes. --->
4/ Israelis are having a very difficult time accepting Iranian rationality. To even suggest such rationality is blasphemous to the point of heresy. Israel needs to sober up quickly. It can no longer afford or expect to rampage freely. There's a new game in town.
1/ Talk of "peace" is misleading. There can be no peace when one of the parties is reduced to rubble strewn with dead and starving bodies. Reckoning must precede peace, a comprehension of the past and the will to live with it. Reckoning is far from current reality. --->
4/ The joy at the death of children, or of Haniyeh's family, suggests that at our current state, we Israelis are most alive when Palestinians die. There's an inverse symbiosis here. "They" all want to kill "us", so when "they" die our lives seem more present, more tangible. --->
14/ It isn't just disregard for Palestinian lives. We can no longer care about our own. This assassination is a direct attack on everything Israel claims to hold dear. It was approved at field level with no hesitations. Dehumanize long enough and you lose your own humanity.
1/ A brief impression from Israeli Twitter- Israelis are profoundly confused. They were prepared for armageddon. They received a precise strike that resulted in remarkably few hits. The Iranians knew what they were doing ("how could they? They're irrational!!!). --->
8/ I would like to thank everyone who reads and responds. I welcome your thoughts and am happy to talk and think. I appreciate your time and consideration. This "war" must end. Palestine must be free. Israel must take responsibility for its actions in order to change profoundly.
1/ Why did Israel kill 7 aid workers in Gaza? For the same reason it kills tens of thousands of civilians and refers to them as "collateral damage". The Israeli military's goal in it campaign of annihilation in Gaza was "to destroy Hamas". How do you that? --->
3/ Because for just about the first time ever, Israel's actions received a reply in kind and Israel was denied the option of escalating further. This means that the Iranian strike was seen legitimate to an extent and Israelhad to bear the consequences of its own actions. --->
13/ That's how dehumanization works. Israel has invested all of its effort in demonstrating the lack of Palestinian humanity. In the process, Israel has lost everything that makes one human, from discernment to the awareness that every act has consequences and implications. --->
9/ Assassinating his sons and grandsons is the most detrimental action on both accounts. No one negotiates in good faith after such a blunt attack on loved ones. Any hostage deal has just been dealt a massive blow. Those who extoll "military pressure" are laughable. --->
Israel's assassination of Ismail Haniyeh's sons and grandsons is proof positive that Israel wants no negotiation and no cooperation with the US, nor does it want to return its hostages. Such lethal vanity and stupid smugness, making Haniyeh a martyr. Murderous solipsism.
2/ Israel attacked and killed a car carrying the three men and three children. Haniyeh himself was the one who announced his loss. Responses in Israel covered a revealing spectrum. There were many who professed joy. "They were terrorists and the deserved it!" --- >
6/ There is no room for context and hierarchy, of scale or urgency. Anything is everything. People who operate on this assumption are people actively denying their humanity; they are automatons. Circumstance and context are part of the human experience. Not here. --->
12/ All of Israel's causes have been severely damaged. And why? Because "our job" is to "kill anyone interested in attacking us". Such stupidity, such lack of sensitivity and sensibility, attests to the existential lack of humanity on the Israeli side, not the Palestinian. --->
7/ Were the three children "terrorists"? Were the three men immediate risks? It doesn't matter. They were identified as "Hamas" and were therefore deserving of death. It doesn't end there. These were not just six individuals identified with Hamas. There were Haniyehs. --->
5/ I believe in restoring Palestinian rights, including the right of return. I also believe in respectful, equitable cooperation as the only way to make this happen. I understand the inevitable violence of the struggle on both sides. I oppose this violence. --->
3/ "He was a terrorist and we took revenge!" "We will strike and kill anybody who messes with us!". There were also those who were quick to announce that the strike was not approved by Israel's political leadership. It was, in fact, approved by a field commander. --->
2/ "Hamas must be destroyed" is accepted as sufficient reasoning for everything from indiscriminate slaughter to "errors in judgment" made by Israeli field commanders (for example, the destruction of Al-Israa university by Brigadier General Barak Hiram). --->
5/ But what kind of life are we talking about? Consider the underlying assumption of the assassination and its implications. The assumption is that identification as "Hamas" means identification as a "terrorist" which in turn means necessary, immediate elimination. --->
2/ Their barrage was almost entirely intercepted. This was due to the help of Israel's allies. But this help came with a price. These allies, led by the US, have told Israel that this is not a "war" and that Israel must not reatalliate. Why is this important? --->
8/ We know. We know that decades of promoting Jewish supremacy and its necessary counterpart, the total dehumanization of the Palestinians, have brought us to this point. We cannot imagine ourselves validated by anything other than this supremacy. --->
6/ This is, for me, a remarkably difficult time. My difficulties pale before the suffering of the Gazans and Palestinians in general. The immediate evils of this "war" must stop - the starvation, the bombings, the inhuman treatment. I know and say this as an Israeli Jew. --->
1/ Israel is undergoing a live double fear attack. On the Iranian "front", full paralysis- pretty much ordered to stay at home, educational activities suspended, air force and air defense on full alert - presented as "utmost readiness to make Iran pay". As "1984" as it gets. --->
7/ The starvation and the famine are what we fear most, so deeply that we could never express this fear in words - that our chickens have come home to roost. We fear what we have become. We cannot pretend that this is not who we are, that we've been hijacked by "extremists". --->
9/ Some of us relish the occasion. Most of us believed we had solid foundations even if our house was built on a faultline. Now, however, we stare silently at the receding edge of the abyss as we fall.
1/ Israelis are being intentionally freaked out about a war that will "inevitably" break out with Iran on Friday. Why? Because Israel is losing its Gazan impunity and must generate a distraction. Trips are being canceled and the entire country is stocking up on tins. --->
10/ And now Haniyeh, he of the fancy hotels in Qatar and the rumored stolen fortune, stands shoulder to shoulder with every Gazan who has lost kin (and all of them have). What would convince Gazans otherwise? Still, Israel at some level made the decision to kill. --->
1/ While it continues to decimate Gaza and the Gazans, Israel is slowly beginning one of its patented denial routines. No one is seriously denying the shedding of Palestinian blood. Very few care about that. The dance of denial is performed in-house. Palestinians are props. --->
12/ Words lose their meaning when you are talking to yourself. Israelis are talking to themselves. We have fully dehumanized the Palestinians. We are in full denial of the world. Our words are empty. Emptiness breeds fear. Fear fuels anger. Anger isolates. We are alone.
3/ Presented with such an all-encompassing goal, the "collateral damage" of Gazan deaths is a price Israelis are willing to pay, like Lord Farquad in "Shrek". As long as the narrative can be contained within a military framework Israelis can accept is as "professional". --->
4/ But regular people don't talk
about the starvation. That is a little strange, because from the beginning of the "war" pundits representing the entire Israeli political spectrum have spoken on record about the "benefits" of starvation. One might expect public debate. --->
It is imperative that we remember Gaza now. The desolation that Israel made, the tens of thousands dead, the millions homeless and displaced and starving. The Israeli hostages languishing. Israel and the world are using the "Iranian Strike" as a distraction. Don't let them.
3/ I have written extensively about the historical and current evils of the occupation. I have criticized the Israeli offensive on Gaza from day one. I believe Israel has spiraled out of control and is showing some of its true colors as a result. This breaks my heart. --->
6/ We don't talk about it. We know, I think, that starvation and ensuing famine are points of no return. We cannot blame Hamas. We cannot abuse the spectres of Israel's own victims, nearly 1200 massacred by Hamas, in our eyes the ultimate justification for endless death. --->
2/ I don't call for or believe in the dissolution of Israel. I realize that ongoing violent suppression is a prominent element of Israel's core. I will do all I can to change this. I think it can be changed. The initial requirement for me is acknowledgement by Israelis. --->
4/ I believe this can change. I believe it, I suppose, because this is my home. Accepting criticism regarding the foundations of my home does not amount to calling for its demolition as far as I am concerned. Israel will change, or it will drive itself into expiration. --->
1/ Where things appear to be standing at the moment: The Iranian strike on Israel seems to have been a conscientious production. Iran gave 72 hours of notice, allowing the countries notified plenty of time to intercept and thwart the missiles and drones launched. --->
7/ I post to share the lessons I learn about the zombification of my society in real time. I post to reflect on the truths I am learning about my Israeliness, truths I have engaged with before but was privileged enough not to have seared into my mind. Now they are seared . --->
5/ One would be wrong. Very few people talk about starvation, about the Israeli policy and about the famine already beginning to rage in the northern part of the strip. Even those eager to kill or deport Gazans tend to stay mum. There is little rejection or denial. --->
1/ Israel has never been weaker. The bluster is there, as are the murderous toys. The chest-thumping in the name of God is also present. Weakness can also inspire recklessness. But Israel is as weak as it has ever been, precisely when its strength seems unchecked. --->
3/ Israelis are not just confused; they are dazed. The "war" in Gaza is flailing. No hostage deal seems to be materializing without Israel committing to major concessions. Hizballah has not erupted. Everone is looking to Israel but we haven't got a clue.
8/ Israel has two hopes with regard to Haniyeh and the rest of Hamas leadership. The first is to negotiate successfully with him for the return of the Israeli hostages. The second is to drive a wedge between him and ordinary Gazans who would (hopefully) drive Hamas out. --->
1/ This tweet by a prominent Israeli intellectual and scholar of religion has made me think rethink my position on whether Israel's crimes in Gaza should be considered Genocide. The clip of Gazans at the beach is accompanied by one word - Genocide. --->
2/ Nothing has broken out. The US has said it does not approve of an Israeli retalliation. Israelis expected clarity on the "morning after", validation that they were once again perennial victims. This also did not happen. Israel and Iran are, for now, on equal footing. --->
11/ What are the effects of this decision? The hostages, they living symbols of Israeli humanity in the sense of solidarity, commitment and also suffering, are more farther than they have been in a while. Hamas leadership in Qatar has reforged its link to the "inside". --->
1/ Israelis are taking to the streets to demonstrate against their government, calling for a hostage deal. They still refrain from calling for an end to the "war", even though that is the only path towards a hostage deal. Why is "stop the war" impossible for Israelis? --->
1/ This post saddens me as an Israeli. There is Antisemitism in the world. There are also the abhorrent, unceasing actions of Israel in Gaza. To once again claim that Israel is being singled out for a-historical reasons is to reject any notion of accountability for Israel. --->
Global conversation is full of people who hate Putin but don’t hate the Russians.
Who detest Orban but don’t hate the Hungarians.
Who loathed and loathe Trump but don’t hate the American people.
Who despise Wilders but don’t hate the Dutch.
Who hate Netanyahu and also hate the…
1/ A personal thought- I feel no satisfaction regarding the UNSC resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire. I doubt Netanyahu has the gumption to invade Rafah without American cover. The world can be pleased with itself for "getting involved". This pleasure frightens me.--->
1/ I am a member of various messaging groups alongside scholars, pundits and civil servants. Since the Iranian strike on Israel I am seeing the resurgence of a sentiment that held sway after October 7th but one I thought had died down since. It has not died down. --->
1/ This post is a great indication of how an influential part of the Israeli elite positions itself with regard to the unraveling "war" in Gaza. It saddens and disturbs me as an Israeli Jew. What is the central point made here: --->
The fierce assaults against Israel - not just its government but its whole society, culture, and its very right to exist - are unlike any hostility aimed at rogue states like Russia, China and North Korea. Why?
Amtisemitism, yes, that too. But bear with me. There’s more to it.…
1/ The arrest of Prof. Nadera Dhalhoub Kevorkian, an arrest made because of academic articles she published, has been thrown out by a lower court judge. Advocates of individual liberties were aghast at the attmepted curtailing of academic freedom and rallied to her defense. --->
1/ Israel's newest "raid" on Shifa Hospital in Gaza city demonstrates the collapse of any "pretense" of strategy. Israel has been reduced to finding needles in a haystack - killing senior Hamas operatives- when it can locate them. Why? --->
1/ The withdrawal of IDF "maneuvering" forces from the Gaza strip seems to have had some effect on the Israeli mainstream. Clamors for "operating in Rafah) now seem to be partisan (on the Israeli right) or to emanate from the diehards reluctant to acknowledge failure. --->
5/ We need to be restrained for our own good. Our government has imploded, generating terror (fright) against a foreign enemy while genuflecting in terror against in-house terrors. We are caught up in a whirlwind of fear, mindless, destroying ourselves in the bargain.
1/ The sad, sobering truth about curent Israeli discourse is that there are very few distinctions between left and right. Both are converging, becoming a troubling, solipsistic (and thus violent towards those not included) monologue, signifying nothing but death. --->
1/ From the IDF investigation of the WCK assassinations (I'll translate):
THE IDF admits that the vehicles were marked but says it was night time and they did not see the stickers. The IDF says that the convoy was cleared for traveling by all military authorities --->
2/ I'm angry at the international community for eagerly joining the game initiated and played by the masters of war, the game about Israel and Iran's nuclear program. This is a charade, full of grainy images and technical jargon and doomsday predictions. --->
1/ I spoke with a wise woman yesterday, a journalist who wanted my take on the political situation in Israel. The first and last question she asked me were identical. Could I identify a political voice that articulates an alternative or any kind of hope? I simply said "no". --->
11/ There is nothing gratis in the desolation that is Gaza. Israel is responsible for the Gazans' welfare. It is an occupying power and it the annihilating power. Israel is obligated not just to let aid through but to provide the aid itself. Nothing gratis whatsoever. --->
2/ An article on , Israel's most popular news site, mentioned the "expectation that a multinational force from moderate Sunni countries will enter the Gaza strip has not materialized". Only in a parallel universe could Israel have "expected" this.
4/ The Iranians have made it clear they have no intention of starting a war. The Gazans couldn't mount an offensive even if they wanted to. Palestinians in the West Bank are wedged tightly under the IDF/settler boot. Still, Israel is hooked on fear and is unraveling. --->
4/ But in the present Israel continues to use a lethal algorithm to locate Hamas personnel, preferably in their homes, and then kill them and their families. Israel continues to peddle the lie about "destroying Hamas" as it pounds the rubble of Gaza into gravel. --->
1/ There are various fictions perpetuated by official Israel supported by its Jewish citizens:
1. That the "war" is a defensive one meant to preserve Israeli security. This was never true. Hamas carried out a horrendous, criminal massacre. Israel responded in kind. --->
A Post investigation has found that Israeli vehicles were present in the area and that Israeli weapons likely caused the visible damage in the killing of 6-year-old Hind Rajab and eight others in Gaza City on January 29.
Before she was killed, Rajab called the Palestinian Red…
7/ This is not a good day for the world. It is a day that highlights the world's shame and complicity, the world's willingness to differentiate between human beings. Nothing but resolute action to end the Israeli occupation and establish a Palestinian state can change this.
9/ The final word for today is "gratis" (in Hebrew, "hinam"). Zitun writes about Israeli frustration. Frustrated why? Because it is allowing the entry of aid into Gaza gratis, without it being part of a hostage deal. This is an admission that Israel has been starving Gaza. --->
2/ Iran is, indeed, Israe's enemy. Iran has absolutely no interest in giving its enemy what it wants. Iran triumphs every day as long as Israel continues its mad stampede. Israelis are losing their collective minds.
13/ We are withering. We are devoting our dwindling resources to maintaining appearances, to keeping up with the grand game, as we try maniacally to deny and destroy all evidence of our crimes. We are still being granted leeway. We cannot stop. Today is an angry day.
1/ Most days combine anger and incredulity. Some days are just about sadness. Today is a sad day. Israel is imploding. This is a process. Israelis and their harshest critics deny the existence of a process. Both sides view "their" violence as inherently justified. --->
1/ The level of cognitive detachment in Israel continues to boggle my mind. While the religious right is happy to embrace the chaos of the end times, the great majority of Jewish Israelis are retreating into two fortresses of denial. --->
2/ In the West Bank, fear of ourselves, of who we've become. A young settler was murdered in the hills around his outpost. "In response" (as though that's a thing) settlers have begun razing nearby village, shooting and burning, and have already shot one Palestinian dead. --->
3/ IDF forces have been mobilized and the authorities have been pleading (I swear; it is humiliating) with the settlers to "calm down". A parliamentarian from the center-left tweeted that "civilian revenge" is "not the way". The state of Israel is mortified of its own sons. --->
3/ "Expectations" are not pipe dreams or escapist fantasies where a country assumes it can get aways with annhiliating a territory and a people and have someone else come and clean up the mess. The Hebrew word, "tzipiyah", no longer means what I thought it does. --->
@rothmar
Israel is on a rampage. On the one hand we demolish and deny (in Gaza). On the other we strike and wink (in Syria). Refusing to admit to ourselves what we have wrought, we pretend we are not subject to any rules. We are drunk on death, the prospect of our own included.
5/ I am angry and heartbroken with my countrymen, many of whom know the truth yet continue to refrain from acknowledging it as an essential condition for action. I understand their reticence. Israel is entering a week-long holiday on Monday. Most of the reservists are home. --->
