I gave a speech at the Policy Forum for Wales on Friday, setting out a range of recent evidence on curriculum reform, and calling for Welsh Government to reconsider the role of knowledge in the curriculum framework.

I'd like to introduce you all to Rory Kingston David! We had a bit of a bumpy start, but we are now home from hospital and enjoying getting to know him. Apologies to all those I haven't replied to in the past few weeks - this is why!
Teachers from England have on average the least teaching experience of all 34 countries that took part in TALIS. We (at a system level) need to hold onto the teachers we have rather than desperately trying to recruit new ones.
Two years ago, I wrote a book I wanted to write because 350 people assured me they'd read it. I didn't know how many more would sell, but my personal goal was to sell enough that it'd be published in paperback. It's coming out this Thursday!
Beyond chuffed to have the Education Minister for Delhi tweeting about my book! Looking forward to hearing his reflections on implications for Indian education.

, I read a wonderful book
#CleverLands
, about top-performing education systems by
@lucy_crehan
As the name suggests,
#CleverLands
are those countries who have used education wisely to increase their collective intelligence and emerged as developed nations.
I've just read a bitchy comment about my book by some academics in their published work, implying I've written about system improvement because it's lucrative! I want to laugh it off but in truth it stings, because they're people I know and respect.
I’ll add my own: NQT year, and I’d written my lesson plan in 5min chunks. My feedback was that I needed to plan what was going to happen in EVERY MINUTE of the lesson.

Lucy Crehan leads the exploration of international education systems in module 6: Comparing educational systems in different countries of our new Online MA Education. She introduces the module in this short clip:

An alternative to high-stakes accountability: Combine School Accountability with School Support.
This alternative is not unknown and risky, it is practised in some of the world's highest performing systems. My takeaways from Cleverlands:
I think the Curriculum for Wales

has the potential to be fantastic. But having spent time in schools in other countries with similarly high-level curriculum frameworks, I also know there are some potential challenges to overcome. (1/5)
If anyone else wants to do this (SLT or teachers), I'll Skype in to your book club and answer Qs for free in exchange for a pic of you all reading the book!
Just had our first official ‘SLT bookclub’ discussing successful education systems around the world and how we can learn from them. Thanks to

I’m so pleased to see Sweden making this move. I spent a week observing lessons in Swedish classrooms a couple of years ago, and so many students were using their devices for watching manga/‘the voice’/football etc. rather than working on what the teacher had asked them to.

How did Delhi Govt achieve soo much in last 5-6 yrs in the field of education ?
What is the Delhi leadership team doing different?

I’ve heard this frustration echoed in the UK too - teachers expected to plan from scratch in the name of ‘autonomy’ rather than being given high quality resources/plans to start from. It’s one of the major differences between U.K. edu and top-performers.
Hi,
Having attended my 2nd cluster day a couple of weeks ago I voiced a concern I have regarding the new JCT to one of the JCT facilitators (who by the way was lovely and very supportive). He unfortunately was...
The new PISA results are out tomorrow. Some people don't like PISA, and will say so tomorrow.
I think it measures something important, and is useful because it gives us some clues about what makes for good education policy.
That said, it's often used badly. (1/2)
"Skills vs knowledge" is one of the most significant debates in education.
Yesterday, one of the creators of a flagship skills-based curriculum admitted it's not possible to teach skills without knowledge.
Hugely important for education globally.
It was quite the logistical challenge to attend

To mark the 5th anniversary of the publication of Cleverlands, we are (finally) releasing an audiobook edition! 🥳 Now with a new afterword. You can pre-order it here and it is out on the 17th December. Happy listening!
This is typically misleading about the education system in Finland (typical of media reporting). Schools are required to do just one 'phenomenon-based learning' module a year - other than that, they teach regular subjects.
#Finland
's curriculum endorses phenomenon-based learning as a progressive approach to curriculum and pedagogy suitable for 21st century learners. This approach breaks down subject-based compartmentalisation of knowledge.
We are proposing an exciting new online MA in Teaching and Learning. Currently under construction, full launch expected Sept 2020, module 1 available January. Register your interest at

Given that 275+ health/care workers & 52 transport workers have died with COVID-19, why is anyone angry with teachers who are worried about getting it?
Especially as we still don’t know how easily kids can transmit it?
I completely empathise with their very real concerns.
Thank you so much to all the amazing teachers, headteachers, school support staff and childcare workers for soldiering on amid all the confusion - we see you.
@tes
I heard this from students in Sweden today. They said a large part of what makes a great teacher or lesson is when they can tell that the teacher really wants to be there, and loves their job.
The

I often get asked about the relationship between spending on education and PISA results, so here's the latest data on PISA reading: it makes a significant difference up to a point, but then isn't an obvious explanatory factor.

Anyone else pregnant and have a partner that works in Intensive Care? Would love to chat to someone in the same position to find out what you’re doing and talk through the implications. X
This is music to my ears. Estonia, Singapore, Shanghai and others all have teacher career structures in which teachers get promotions without leaving the classroom.
@Addysg_Cymraeg
Here's a useful graph from
@lukesibieta
showing the trends in the four UK nations. I acknowledge the improvement between 2018-2022. But I am concerned/intrigued/confused by the belief that recovery will be supported by the new curriculum. 🧵
Spot on. England's expectations for 5/6 yr old children are higher than top-performing countries, and too high for many, meaning some are left behind right from the beginning. Having realistic expectations and bringing all along would lead to higher achievement in the long run.
I am VERY excited to be speaking at my first ResearchEd Scotland! I'll be speaking about international trends and research in national curriculum design, and the potential for inter-school collaboration to bring about curricula coherence.
@Addysg_Cymraeg
@lukesibieta
The Curriculum for Wales is very similar to (and influenced by) the CfE in Scotland. While you may argue that we don't know whether the CfE is related to Scotland's PISA decline, it's clear that it has not improved pupil progress.
Cleverlands will be released in Swedish next week! I will be in Malmo and Gothenburg, speaking about my research and learning more about the Swedish system.
It is so perverse that this kind of article is behind a paywall. I have access, but what about all the HTs and teachers who will be designing curricula based on the new framework?
More info about the project and some of the thinking underlying it here -
Please apply to get involved in the design, and know that even if you can't commit to this, all resources produced will be available across Wales. Diolch.

I am sickened to the stomach by reports of the atrocities committed by Hamas. Truly evil. And I am heartbroken for Gaza’s families under siege. The whole thing is impossibly sad and cruel. I’m also appalled by the antisemitism surfacing in the UK - none of this is justified.

As do I. As a parent of two children who will go to school in Wales, I despair at this proposal to drop Biology, Chemistry, Physics and English Literature as separate GCSEs. I really hope it is reconsidered.

Interesting data on PISA coverage here - the proportion of 15-yr-olds who sat PISA. The UK is below average at around 85%, and the China provinces is the lowest of all top-performers, at just above 80%. How would the remaining students have performed I wonder?

I'm putting together a course on international benchmarking in education, and many of the (albeit excellent) academics and practitioners I'm including are white men. Twitter, can you recommend me brilliant women and/or people of colour who work in this area?
To support these schools, and others open to additional PD and resources, I'll be working with regional consortia and teachers across Wales to help design curricula processes for each AOLE, and exemplify how these might be used to design coherent school/cluster-level curricula.

I have personally seen similar effects in schools in Sweden. It also presents an equity challenge. It is the schools that are already struggling, often serving disadvantaged students, that are less likely to have the capacity to design thorough curricula from scratch. (4/5)
I'm currently reading India's new National Education Policy and am finding it rather inspiring, both in terms of the ambition contained within it, and also the optimism and lack of cynicism in the initial reactions I've read.

What makes me think so? Leaving content selection up to schools with no/little middle tier collaboration has been shown to lead to arbitrary selection of content in New Zealand and Scotland, which leave school curricula incoherent. (e.g. Smith, 2019; Wood & Sheehan, 2021). (3/5)

And more support for teachers in their first 5 years - I don't have stats to hand to back this up, but my sense is that many leave for reasons other than money.
One thing that would help would be making drinking water available around London (and the rest of the UK). Crazy that you can't fill up a bottle at Waterloo Station - so many unnecessary bottles bought.

The million-dollar question asked by Dr Kapri - How can we design accountability mechanisms for teachers so that it improves performance but it doesn't hamper creativity?
#delhieducationconference
@MrMcEnaney
Far too much assessment and not enough teaching. I’m expected to get each of my 4 x BGE classes through 3 pieces of assessed work in the 8 weeks of Term 1, purely so the school can start generating attainment data. It’s absolute nonsense.
As someone who does go on about Finland, I still agree with the contents of this blog! What is still relevant is to look at is Finnish structures/approaches/policies introduced in the 70s, 80s and 90s, rather than more recent reform.
