With the damage Mr Cummings is doing to the Government’s reputation he must consider his position. Lockdown has had its challenges for everyone. It’s his cavalier “I don’t care; I’m cleverer than you” tone that infuriates people. He is now wounding the PM/Govt & I don’t like that
FWIW: 1) the Sue Gray report must be published in full; 2) likewise any Met report; 3) if fines are issued we should know; 4) the Jimmy Saville false allegation should be withdrawn.
Before the false counter narrative gets its trousers on let’s make this clear: it’s not the chlorine that’s the issue it’s the shit animal welfare standards that REQUIRES the use of chlorine to render the chicken consumable. Better standards = no chlorine
Former
@Tesco
executive Tim Smith calls for an end to "alarmism" over chlorinated chicken and says trade policy should be "informed by evidence, and expert opinion".

is not acting as a journalist. As a barrack room lawyer? Yes. As a saloon bar bore? Yes. As a bully? Yes. As a show off? Undoubtedly. He is not a seeker after truth: he’s a male chicken
In relation to NI Protocol checks: I’m a Conservative. I believe in the Rule of Law and adhering to obligations we voluntarily entered. There’s no ifs and buts on this. The reputation of the UK on these matters is important. Anyone who cares about the UK should feel the same
I hadn’t realised that being a first class, ocean going, chateau bottled, nuclear powered prick was an exemption from wearing a mask. What a selfish loathsome tool this man is
Ministers resigned *because* of the PM. The Party lost confidence *because* of the PM. It is beyond credulity that Mr Johnson can stay in office even pro tem. New constitutional territory but he has to go and go means go
Survived making my breakfast following a surprise encounter with a feisty French Fancy lying in wait with a tooled up sponge finger in the kitchen . We live in dangerous times people; dangerous times. Take care out there!
With worsening Covid situation & time of the year I’d really like to see the clock temporarily “stopped” on Brexit talks. There’s no Parly time to scrutinise & agree a Deal & daily clarity of the dangers to our already pressured economy of No Deal is alarming. Time for maturity
I don’t wish to be rude BUT who the hell is an unelected, failed Minister to tell any MP what to do? For some unknown reason David Frost perpetually thinks we give a flying xxxx what he thinks. We don’t and we won’t
Theresa May is the most disastrous Prime Minister on their own terms in modern times, with David Cameron a close second - but until we get rid of Tory rule, Britain's turmoil will only deepen. Discussing that on Politics Live, BBC2, 12.15pm onwards...
This will come as no surprise to those who know me but I have written to Graham Brady asking for a rule change governing the holding of confidence votes & a further confidence vote to be held. Change is needed & needed now: for the sake of our Country, my constituents & my Party
I really am sick to the back teeth of attacks on Judges, Diplomats and Civil Servants. They are almost universally people of unimpeachable character, probity and public service ethos. They uphold our laws, represent us abroad and deliver public policy.
#bestofbritish
He might not. I, on the other hand, fwiw, do. The UK’s reputation as an upholder of the Rule of Law and abiding by its self-entered into legally binding agreements is more important now than anytime in my lifetime. It’s not a plaything. We are temporary guardians of it
Brexiteer Bernard Jenkin says "The UK made a mistake in signing the Withdrawal Agreement."
The Conservatives campaigned on the deal in the general election.
14 million people voted for
@BorisJohnson
in 2019. If you want to overturn that then vote and own the decision. You will own that forever as a ex MP.
Democratically he has earned the right to lead the party into the next election. He and no one else will every have that mandate
Been there. Done that. Purchased the t shirt. “I’m sorry. I will listen. I will learn” then joke behind closed doors “I don’t see any problem etc”. It won’t wash any more. That tactical ship has sailed (and sunk)
Prime Minister touring the tearoom and talk of an interview this evening
No. 10 trying to calm the ship after mood has continued to worsen as the day has gone on
Boris Johnson's allies talking about the need for him to make it to the summer recess....
As the debate/discussion re Asylum seekers rears it head again can we just all try to remember one thing: whatever the status, legal, illegal, trafficked, victims of war, famine etc we are ALL human beings. Let’s not dehumanise our fellow man
Well that’s strange because I’ve a letter from Govt dated 11/9 (it’s all published tomorrow) to say the EU is acting in good faith with a view to resolving issues
Any chance we could lose the “Liberation Day” “Freedom Day” terms? Occupied countries get liberated, those in slavery secure freedom, the oppressed and downtrodden by corrupt regimes deserve the right to use these terms: not us, not now, not ever.
SIMPLY NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
@ukhomeoffice
needs to move today from pettifogging process to active delivery. Stop “computer says no” mindset and get on and help. Don’t criticise Irish Republic: replicate it. Remember how we responded to Ugandan Asian crisis? We can and must do this
Mark Easton on BBC News just now - the home office has just confirmed there is no visa centre in Calais.
@BBCMarkEaston
The "surge" in effort it claimed at weekend was three or four staff and a few bottles of water and packets of crisps.
“Mark Carney is a second tier Canadian politician who failed to get on in Canadian politics and then got a job in the UK. I don’t think he’s greatly respected”
Jacob Rees Mogg even more unimpressed with Governor Carney than normal...
It simply cannot be good governance or indeed right for any minister anywhere to make public policy decisions based on personally sought legal advice while bypassing in house, accountable counsel.
Shameful. There’s no backdoor for refugees. We need a big, generous, welcoming front door. As I said on Monday better we replicate the RoI not criticise it.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin has confirmed that Priti Patel complained to the Irish government that Ireland’s welcoming policy towards Ukrainian refugees would allow them to reach the UK by the back door
The trains could be pulled by an inexhaustible herd of Unicorns overseen by stern, officious dodos. A PushmePullYou could be the senior guard and Puff the Magic Dragon the inspector. Let’s concentrate on making the Protocol work and put the hallucinogenics down
1. It took 30 years for the channel tunnel - 5 from breaking ground
2. There was no munitions dump under the channel
3. There would still be checks unless we have not only dynamic alignment but a legal framework
4. It wouldn't unblock trade, alignment would
4. Ach yer auld hole.
Given the FACT that world economies are being hit by Covid should we leave the EU without a Deal? I think not. Our businesses (both sides of the Channel) need all help they can get. I agree with
@BorisJohnson
when he said leaving with no deal would be a failure of statecraft
My family & I have been touched by the help & kindness of so many people as we’ve looked for our dog Jerry. That search ended this morning as I found him. It looks like he’d had a heart attack (there’s not a mark on him) in a nearby pond. He was always loved & be forever missed
“We’ve lost a court case let’s shred the GFA in revenge” is not the politics NI wants or deserves. Or was the shredding of the GFA always the end game?
Once again the over mighty Executive seeks to undermine/influence a solely “House matter”. David Willetts had to resign as a Whip in the mid90s for interfering with a Select Committee. The Committee shouldn’t give a damn what any Minister thinks. This is a serious abuse of power
A reminder that
@NadineDorries
supported (or at least didn't vote against) referring this matter to the Privileges Committee on 21 April. She is now trying to publicly pressure the MPs on the committee not to do the job she - and the entire House - asked them to do
It’s always a sadness when a Tory colleague leaves our Party. I’ve been a member since 1985. It feels like a bereavement. But there’s no point shouting abuse at the individual as the deed is done. Instead we should always ask 2qs: 1) why?; 2) how do we stop others going?
Brexiteer and ex-Tory leader Michael Howard says in the Lords: "How can we reproach Russia, or China, or Iran when their conduct falls below internationally accepted standards, when we are showing such scant regard for our treaty obligations?"
In the words of Norman Lamont on Black Wednesday: “today has been a very difficult day”. These are not circumstances beyond the control of Govt/Treasury . They were authored there. This inept madness cannot go on
There’s deep disquiet across the Party at the handling of this issue of the Whip. We can’t win unless our base is broad and representative of all strands of opinion. No10 needs to rethink and fast. I think we are better being like Churchill and NOT Stalin

“If the protocol is the ‘best of both worlds’ then why wouldn’t Dublin want that for their citizens?
Move the Sea border from the Irish Sea to the Celtic Sea” - Mike Nesbitt MLA
If true I can’t say I’m sorry. He was unsuited to the “doing of politics”, never understood the need for personal rapport or the importance of trust. I hope whoever takes over will be from the Commons where we can all question directly.
My sincere anxiety/fear is that Boris Johnson simply has too much baggage and “history” to ever allow the Country, Government and Party to move on and look forward. He made too many mistakes. We need a new, fresh chapter. We need and want
@RishiSunak
#Ready4Rishi
I’ve read the Privileges Cttee Report on Mr Johnson. I agree its findings & outcomes. The Commons would do well to support the Report. Unfortunately, due to a family illness, I’m not in Parliament and am “paired”. Had I been in I would support the Report as I did with Paterson
IMHO that was
@BorisJohnson
most professional and convincing performance in the Commons I’ve heard from him. He listened to the House and responded with seriousness and respect. I will be voting for his Deal and against any amendments. The PM has earned my respect and trust
2 points if I may:
A) “dealing with rioting” is actually the ultimate responsibility of the actual President rather than a candidate with no exec power;
B) the US, as a guarantor of the Good Friday Agreement, has legitimate skin in the game
The former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith has told the presidential candidate Joe Biden to tackle rioting in the US rather than “lecture” Britain over Northern Ireland
Not this sabre rattling again! Worth noting: a) we did the “negotiations” this is about amends; b) inflation up, recession on horizon & we think now a good time for a trade war with our nearest neighbours?; c) no honourable country should act unilaterally within an agreement
The Foreign Secretary will reportedly move to discard large portions of the Northern Ireland Protocol after giving up on Brexit negotiations with the EU.
When the sovereignty of Kuwait was violated through illegal invasion. A global coalition of the willing stood physically, shoulder to shoulder, to uphold the Rule of Law. We can’t pick and choose when we do so. Russian action destabilises our world.
Re Will Smith incident
@theoscars22live
I’d just hope if someone thought it in good taste to make a joke at the expense of a medical condition of my wife then I’d get up and lamp him. The *joke* was tasteless
FWIW: I’m a Celt & I love the rich diversity of language & culture across our islands. The Welsh Language Act didn’t lead to a rise in nationalism but a cultural flowering & richness. If it comes to the Commons I will vote for an Irish Language Act. We will act if Stormont fails
Ireland: 2,200 Ukrainian refugees have arrived since 23 February, department for foreign affairs has just told RTE.
This, as Telegraph briefed by anonymous source that UK, which has been criticised for refugee policy, worries common travel area is open back door open to the UK.
But the problem here
@J_Donaldson_MP
is you did not consent to the backstop either and there clearly has to be a demarcation somewhere. The Protocol does not change the constitutional integrity of the UK and NI’s place within it. *Only* a border poll would/could do that
Para “the effects of the Protocol .....” is misleading and fundamentally wrong. The UK and EU negotiated the Protocol. Together. It was not an one sided impost. Disagree with it if you like BUT get the *basic* facts right
It’s easy to kick a person when they’re down. I regard Matt Hancock as a friend. We’re all human, with the frailties & imperfections of humanity. Of course those of us who make the rules must adhere to them. There’s no leeway. But: Let him who is without sin cast the first stone
If
@afneil
didn’t exist we’d have to invent. He knows politics in and out and we all know he’s persistent and forensic. This was a contest between Frank Bruno and Charles Hawtrey!
@Simon4NDorset
An Irish language act will undermine English language in Northern Ireland, it will undermine unionists, it will undermine the UK. Imposing the Irish language on people is an extremely dangerous and a very bad idea
And yes Scottish Gaelic and Welsh language has caused problems
Last call to Tory colleagues to support Lords amendments in Ag Bill:
1) protection of Standards was in our Manifesto;
2) Ministers have said they want to maintain standards;
3) every farming, food or env group want Lords Amndts;
4) public want high standards of animal welfare
Could someone / anyone remove Ms Jenkyns’ access to Twitter. We are drowning in vacuity. We are dealing with the future of our Country not some mystic meg predictions
The decision by
@BorisJohnson
not to attend the funeral of HRH in order to allow a member of the family to attend is incredibly selfless and rather noble.
NEW: Boris Johnson will not attend the funeral of Prince Philip. He was due to but the guest list is limited to 30 people and the PM has stood aside to give more space for family and friends
Today I didn’t march, plot, snipe or undermine. I didn’t demand, I didn’t say ‘I’m right, you’re wrong!” Instead I cut the grass and planted lettuce seeds and strawberry plants with my daughters and a quiet supper with my wife
#tryitcolleagues
I’m afraid we’ve heard about these “alternative arrangements “ for 3 years. They are still as clear as mud and elusive as an unicorn riding dodo. The time of abstract theory has long expired. Time for REALITY
I will confess to being saddened by
@theresa_may
announcement. Behind the popular caricature lies the most decent, public duty focussed, patriotic and self sacrificing woman. She took up the oars in choppy and uncharted waters and has faced into the gales with fortitude & dignity
In a no-confidence letter the former Treasury Minister Jesse Norman has warned the PM that breaching the NI Protocol would be ‘economically v damaging, politically foolhardy & almost certainly illegal.’
In case there is any doubt
@theresa_may
has my full support. I look aghast at some peoples’ behaviour. Self indulgent. The general public will think the Party has gone mad. I’m appalled by the antics of some
Credit where it’s due:
@BorisJohnson
has pulled off something I was unsure he could. In September he told me he wanted a Deal and I believed him. He has my admiration and support in delivering this Deal
We’ve got a great new deal that takes back control — now Parliament should get Brexit done on Saturday so we can move on to other priorities like the cost of living, the NHS, violent crime and our environment
#GetBrexitDone
#TakeBackControl
On the floor of the House of Commons Jeffrey Donaldson said the DUP would return to Stormont when the Protocol Bill passed its Commons Stages unamended. It has. He did not say when the Bill became Law. He must honour his commitment
.
@J_Donaldson_MP
speaking after returning from London says the DUP needs to see “more progress” on the protocol bill & assess what the new PM will do before party will support the election of a new speaker, accuses those involved in recall of “stunt politics”
As someone who stood, proudly, on a manifesto to uphold food, environmental and animal welfare standards and having tabled Agriculture Bill amendments to do just that at Committee & Report stages I will be voting FOR the Lords Amendments on Monday.

. Your campaign is doing the same for Liz, I’ve seen 12 of your “personal?” pinned tweets from different people already! Keep your hair on and your hypocrisy to yourself
Would you prefer beer and sandwiches with your union puppet masters while they write the cheques? Guiness with your IRA cronies or falafel with your Hamas buddies? Or better still the pet guinea pigs they’re having to munch in your Venezuelan Nirvana

Whilst people die on the streets, our NHS crumbles, families rely on food banks to eat and people struggle to pay their rent, Theresa May has expensive, lavish suppers with the super rich. Disgraceful.
I always understood Prime Ministers *advised* the Sovereign. I hope HM and The Prince of Wales attend. Wise voices on such an important issue which has huge impacts across The Commonwealth are needed
Ridiculous decision - King Charles has dedicated a large part of his life to environmentalism. He was an outspoken supporter of sustainability, organic farming, and conservation long before it was fashionable. This is well within constitutional parameters.
The need to extend the grace periods of the NI Protocol was compelling. Business is making the change/adjustment. They need more time as this is their de facto transition period. To do so unilaterally strikes me as the approach most likely to have negative/unhelpful consequences
Jerry, our terrier has gone missing/awol/walkabout. He’s chipped so if found please dm or email me. I’ve three very distraught daughters (and Mrs H and I aren’t feeling particularly grand either).
Unutterably appalling. Both “men” (real people don’t behave like that) are identifiable. Full weight of the law should be deployed
@ChiefConPSNI
@chhcalling
Hope Ministers have a moment to read this. We should be concentrating on a) making adjustments via negotiation b) maximising the benefits of dual market access
@BrandonLewis

@Simon4NDorset
Simon this patronising sneering is contemptible. How much betrayal, dehumanisation & injustice do you suggest our community must endure before we dare to raise our voices? Do you understand that for 23 years we have been 2nd class citizens in our own country?
There’s more than a kernel of truth in this article regarding the lack of knowledge of and interest in the island of Ireland. As the old saying goes: Ireland knows too much of its history; GB not enough. If we don’t understand the history we will foul up the future
Here’s a (Times) column I would like to have written. The casual, persistent ignorant damage which England has done to Ireland - and continues to do so
Incredibly clear & important comment. BOTH sides of the aisle stand united (in the US that’s not an everyday occasion) to ensure the Good Friday Agreement & the peace of the island of Ireland are maintained. I will be abstaining at 3rd Reading of the Internal Mkt Bill today
Mick Mulvaney - on Congress’ letter to PM re Brexit, the GFA & a US / UK Trade Deal
“Their attitude is 'look the British need to know that if a border goes up, then all deals are off. I think that's the accurate position of the entire federal government".
No we didn’t . That’s an untruth. Animal sentience is asserted in Animal Welfare Act 2006. Sentience is NOT affected by EU Withdrawal. As someone who voted remain I’m cheesed off with those who think rights can only be EU authored.Stop scaremongering & get your facts right.
Almost 7 years to the day I was first adopted I am delighted and honoured to have been unanimously readopted as the Conservative Party candidate for North Dorset at the next General Election.

Suella Braverman accuses Michael Gove and other Tory rebels of "staging a coup" on the 45p tax rate:
"I am disappointed about the subsequent reversal but I accept their reasons.
"I’m very disappointed that members of our own parliamentary party staged a coup effectively"
Martin Reynolds, who was the PM's principal private secretary in No.10 during Partygate, was expected to be in running for job of UK ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
But I'm told he is being lined up for a Director General level job involving international trade.
