As all this diplomatic/military argy-bargy is going on in the West Russian dictator and warmonger Putin still enjoys a free hand to continue his war against Ukraine without immediate concern or fear of further penalty — because Trump capitulated to his insistence there should be.
There was a time when there was talk of a 30,000+ European deterrence force in Ukraine as part of any peace deal to inhibit further Russian incursions. Now UK and France looking at a much more modest force of a few thousand troops, based far from the front line. Hard to see how.

The backtracking begins:.U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer told Sky News that it was "premature" to know whether U.K. troops would be deployed to Ukraine as part of security guarantees.

Trump has confirmed there will be no US ground troops deployed to keep any peace in Ukraine. No surprise there. Trump wants out of Ukraine not to get further mired in it. Which puts all the onus on Europe, including Britain, to come up with a credible peace-keeping force of scale.

Instead of this nonsense spin the UK needs to explain how we could deploy 20,000 troops from our hollowed out army as part of Ukraine’s security guarantees. And what US support it would deem essential to give our troops credible back up. Plus where the money’s coming from.

Well done taking down these Kremlin talking points with unerring accuracy. The substance is another matter. NATO expansion near Russia’s borders stopped in 2004. Even then it involved new democracies recently under the Russian yoke voluntarily wanting to join an alliance which.
@afneil Whilst there is no justification for invading a sovereign entity (this includes our own misadventures!). NATO’s continued expansion, the Donbas conflict’s persistence (Russian speaking separatists fighting a civil war against Kiev since 2011), Ukraine’s Minsk Agreement delays,.

NATO expansion that might be deemed by the Kremlin to encroach on its borders ended in 2004. Flimsy excuse for an unprovoked invasion in 2022.
@afneil Peace in Ukraine could have been achieved if NATO expansion had been removed as an option. These assertions that Vladimir Putin desires to conquer all of Europe are just fabricated bullshit lies to rationalize continuous funding. .

“It was a bad day for Putin with western unity renewed and the U.S. back in the fold,” one top UK official briefed the media. This is delusional nonsense.

There’s a reason your moniker is ‘psycho babble’, isn’t there?.
@afneil Maybe Ukraine *should* be surrendering? How about that?.

Ukrainians are. But they are still against surrender. It’s their country, their call. And if they choose to fight an evil, merciless invader rather than surrender we should back them.
@afneil Yes Andrew, but you aren’t dying on the battlefield.

So it’s the morning after the night before and it’s not clear what was achieved in the White House yesterday. Plenty of bonhomie to flatter Trump’s ego but few, if any, tangible signs of progress or specific details about what peace would look like. Sweeping concessions still.

No he doesn’t. But his position is strengthened by Trump’s support.

We don’t want to derail anything. Nor are we conned by false bonhomie. We don’t need details at this stage. Just a broad outline of the direction of travel. We don’t even have that.
@afneil You know fine well negotiations will be mostly behind doors & every detail not released for the press, who want to dissect & derail talks. Chill Andy.
