Some people are mean. The internet allows people to encounter far more mean people than they otherwise would, and enables those men people to feed off each other. It also, as stated, enables *you* to find your community of like-minded people you otherwise couldn't. Trade-offs.

Perhaps they honestly believe it to be the preferable ending, which is not the same as the "good" ending. What the creators deem to be the correct path doesn't render said path the only valid choice, and disagreeing does not invalidate the goals of the creator

That methodology attacks the problem backwards unless the storyteller is in favor of the changes happening. The protagonist should be stalwart and successful in spite of the terrible, regardless of age, because they hold on to their integrity. Grumbly failure = out of touch
