Hello. I'm an actual headteacher writing a book. I can tell you why many books are not written by actual headteachers. Because it's basically impossible. But I will persevere. May the productivity gods shine on me. I need a bit of a miracle to be honest.
I was told, when I'd been in post for about 8 school weeks, on the first day of an inspection, 'We're looking at a special measures situation aren't we.' This is
@Ofstednews
. This is the damage. I am so sorry Ruth. I am just so sorry.
I meet my team at 5.30am. We run a half marathon while we decide everything for everyone.
If we notice we are considering too many different points of view we run faster so we can't really talk.
These are a set of two duvet covers from my dad's house. He is in a home. You know, Alzheimer's... I'm sleeping between them this year. My Christmas hug.

If another dog owner tells me that 'they're fine' when their dogs run up to me not on leads, barking, being completely unpredictable I might 💥. I AM NOT FINE. Why do dogs rule? Ruins so things for me. I rate runs on dog incidents. Today was 🤬.
@UKRunChat
am I the only one? 😡
A proud moment in very sad circumstances. Please note - SEND, Early Years and small schools especially. I hope I have done the matter justice. Photo credit to middle daughter.
If Ofsted come next week I'm just going to do collaborative nativity play creation all day for two days. They can join in. I'll let them do the descant line to Hark the Herald. I tell you....
An open letter to
@Ofstednews
written with the executive committee of
@Suffolk_PHA
: 'We ask, are you a force for good or a coercive and dangerous force, a Damoclean sword hanging over dedicated professionals for months and years on end?’
As an association dedicated to supporting primary school headteachers, we have written a letter to
@Ofstednews
. We ask, are you a force for good?
#Ofsted
"Headteachers cannot afford to stray too far from what Ofsted purports is a good education. It is simply too risky, even if headteachers and practitioners know that they could be providing something better."
@vicgoddard
@SwailesRuth
@LoveLetchworth
@Ofstednews
What does falling behind mean? We aren't all designed to go at the same speed. Do you mean children whom teachers are not managing to keep at the same point on a made up scale? Because if you mean that then say it.
Writing a book on school
#governance
. The more I write the more I think we need to shine a light on this area within education - in policy, in training, in research. If we're to have it, let's pay it attention. It can make or break or stagnate a school. Yes? I'm right I think...
Asked for further comment on the English reading paper, the DfE added that Sats had to be tough "in order to measure attainment across the ability range, including stretching the most able children."
.
.
Because there can't be any other option of course to get around this 🙄🙄🙄
This is an example of being privilege-led - deciding something can't be true as not in their sphere of personal experience. Privilege-led behaviour is endemic; it is discriminatory and, when enacted by those in a position of responsibility, it is negligent and abusive.
🤦🏻♀️ Causing some students to feel shame when presenting them with different work i.e. differentiation by task
🤦🏻♀️ Trusting misdiagnosed labels for students who simply need great teaching, teaching great behaviours and help building good habits
If you know people not in education who don't know what the problem is with Ofsted inspections but are open to reading something, I'm told this is handy:
Every child at our school now has their own watercolour set that goes with them and will be replaced as and when it is needed. Art matters, art materials matter.
@mrjamesmayhew
Look what I did!
Today we had a lovely morning at the park. We explored the plants in the nature area, made water colour pictures of what we could see and had our lunch in the sunshine. When we were back at school we all had an ice cream, too! 🌈🌟🌳🎨

@CliffLanePri
The problem with all the knowing more and remembering stuff is that you become so obsessed with the science of making things stick that you haven't noticed that you're trying to do it in an environment that isn't sticky. Like plasters on wet feet.
This is my dad - I visited him today. He has a really rare form of dementia. My brother is running the London marathon to raise money for
@AlzResearchUK
. It's all been pretty devastating for us. Please give my bro a virtual cheer, read this or donate. 🙏🏼🧡
@Shorntobemild
@Ofstednews
Another important point. Thank you. There are many aspects to the process that are ableist. But this is what happens when a narrow group creates a narrow tunnel. It gets narrower and narrower.
@Headteacherchat
We are consulting on this over the coming 24 hours within
@Suffolk_PHA
- not necessarily refusal but what actions can be taken. This is from Ruth's sister.
Stepped in as an interim HT two weeks ago. Allowed myself to forget about the 50 mile race tomorrow because, you know, compartmentalizing for surviving. But now I've remembered... 😬😬😬 I need luck. And bourbon biscuits.
@naomicfisher
I started looking into the school uniform industry once and it was pretty grim. Especially in terms of sustainability. There's a lot of plastic and loads of waste. Don't get me started on the silliness (short termism) of white shirts. Follow the money..
@branwenjeffreys
The pilot inspections didn't end with judgements. This was avoided. In fact we fed back that this made them more productive. I was involved in two.
@capper_sc
Seems a bit weird to tweet this when presumably everyone's asleep, tired out by the kingly shenanigans. But I ran away, and ran a race and won. Do I get a crown?
@RogersHistory
Something around politics and governance - how decisions get made, civic duty, laws and all that. We'd then have more people represented in the future where decisions are made. It's a mystery to lots of people. I'd like more of that. Is that citizenship. I'm not sure...
@cambridge_ok
@Ofstednews
Yes - I think treating it as a watershed moment is the only way we can get any good from such a tragedy. It is time for serious collective action.
Hello new followers. Be aware, I run miles and miles to stay sane. And if that sounds boring, wait until you see all the pictures of trees and muddy paths I post. Happy Saturday. 🏞️🏃🏽♀️🌳👟
Hey busy
#running
people! How do you squeeze it all in? I'm asking some qus tomorrow night about how we manage to fit running around life, family, work, saving the planet and all that... What lengths do we go to to fit it all in?
#UkRunChat
@UKRunChat
Just because I simplify things for people outside of education - un-nichify - doesn't mean I don't understand the complexity. And if you are a man, you don't need to explain anything thanks. You've had your time. I'll call you in about 10000 years.
I'm leaving at 6am tomorrow morning. Local bridge closed due to high winds. Quarter of teachers off (COVID). Looking forward to watching the clock - will
#Ofsted
call? You know, that makes schools better doesn't it. 😡

.
All hands on deck. That's what we do.
Just warming up my headteacher muscles, ready for a wee induction day tomorrow. Stepping in as an interim in September and it feels a bit like Christmas Eve. 😀🏫👩🏫💫✏️🍏
Today I will be following the (pre)teens round shops that sell identical tops in London. I've just been out for a four mile oxygen fix. Will it get me through? 🤞🏼🏃♀️🙏🏼🌅
Just visited the most wonderful small school. It's not all doom and gloom out there. How is it successful? Interconnectedness. The HT said, 'Small schools have been set up to fail but despite that...' Hats off to small school heads (& the teams of course). 🎩🎩🎩

I went as the Lady Who Swallowed a Fly on World Book Day when I was about 38 weeks pregnant. There was lots of laughing then.
Being a headteacher again. 1st time I've done something like this in an LA school. It is very nice. I feel like I'm being useful. I'm naturally quite a strategic person but this is still possible (involved with things *out there*) alongside looking at leaves with 4 yr olds. 🍂🌍
Strava has logged this as a night run. Probably because I started just before 4am. I ran 24 miles in the nearly solstice dark yesterday to raise money for the

Nearly ready to release the Eastern Leaders Ofsted survey report. It is a piece of work, I tell you! Huge respect and gratitude to all those who have helped, completed, reviewed and kept the process going. Over 500 responses....
@Sarah22677927
@Ofstednews
That's very interesting. Thank you for that insight. We should be very wary of any organisation which looks for people to fit in rather than to add diversity to the mix.
Dear leaders (especially those working in SEND), your job is to simplify. Cut out the noise, make things clear, digestible and sensible. Start with that.
@G_Andrews09
@Ofstednews
I have wept today. It has been a very watery day. As you know, I work with headteachers all the time and they are deserving of support, respect, time, resources, training, insight, buildings that work.... The jagged edge of the Ofsted process does no such thing.
One of the first things we do for children who have needs is give them lots of love. It costs nothing, requires no paperwork, and I'm yet to see it do anything but help.
#loveislove
I’m doing the Reindeer Run to support RNLI lifesavers during their busiest time of year. I'm running 24 miles next Tuesday 4-8.30am to get to school on time. Head torch at the ready! 🔦🏃♀️🌊

Schools are beautifully complex. We need time to innovate systems for relaunch. We are amazing. We can do it in one or maybe two weeks. But we can't do it while we're open. It's like trying to change a tyre while a car's still moving. Trust and time please.
I

-ed. Again. This time it was the wind that got me. It's hard to see progress when every race is different. But I'm only minorly broken and I haven't been sick. Small wins. 💫🤸🏼♀️👟💨 Thanks to

for their positivity and 👍🏼👏🏼. It really helps!

One of the issues is they (sorry, I'm doing it now too..) often don't have a voice. Research into 'them' is about 'them'. 'They' are analysed for impact. I'd like 'them' to be at heart of research. 'They' know what they do better than everyone else; it's complex and important.
This is a very big deal and a welcome start. I really hope there is some attention given to how ill-fitting the model is of smaller primary schools. I am ever hopeful.
@NASmallSchs
Breaking: Ofsted inspections will restart 'a couple of weeks' later than planned this term, the new chief inspector has told Schools Week, as he launches an internal inquiry into the watchdog's response to the death of headteacher Ruth Perry
In an increasingly digital and data-led world, maths is essential in so much of what we do and will be even more central to the jobs our children do.
From plumbers to prop makers, fitness coaches to fashion designers, we all benefit from a better understanding of maths.
Proud of a few things today. Spoke
@ASCL_UK
primary conference and didn't cry (which I tend to when I talk about things I care about). But mostly of 4 of our amazing

children who spoke to another school about their lived faith - and were amazing. (😭💫🙏)
@PaulGarvey4
It's the 'delegated' that's so damaging and dissembling. It implies protected funding, that's aportioned, which it isn't. Notional funding is just that - it exists in theory but it's simply just part of how schools are funded overall. It's for systems, not for targeted support.
I avoid the dentist and the doctor like the plague, I cut my own hair, someone once bought me a manicure voucher (they didn't do that again) BUT I have made an appointment with a foot/physio person tomorrow... THAT'S HOW MUCH I LIKE RUNNING.
BREAKING
@naht
has taken the first step towards legal action over OFSTED’s refusal to pause inspections following the death of Ruth Perry. It has issued a formal letter as the first stage towards seeking a judicial review. Ofsted has argued it’s not in children’s interest to stop
Let’s not panic - PM said schools MAY open from 1st June to Reception, Year 1 and Year 6. Detailed guidance will come out shortly. Period of monitoring before final decision is made. We will do the right thing by our staff and pupils.
@ASSETEdu
@jdurran
I've had a non-reading daughter. She's now 13 and into netflix-y and amazon-y things. She has started reading the books linked to the things she watches. The purist in me wants her to do it the other way round but quite honestly, who cares.
@SamanthaWalsh1
@Ofstednews
I think it's very hard for childminders. You are amazing one-person deliverers of extraordinary things. My children's childminder was golden. Imagine if the system of inspection (regulation/monitoring?) was supportive - would we have more and even better childminders? I think so.
Hopelessness can be a symptom of
#depression
which is an illness. If you are supporting someone who is or might be poorly, professional help is best or maybe read this - I think it's useful. Please not the 'no excuses' and snap-out-of-it stuff. 🙏🏼
