A student from our enhanced provision for Autism wanted to sing in assembly. Obviously we needed help from our students. Silence on entry. Waiting to applaud until he’d put his ear defenders on. The next videos show how important empathy is and how remarkable YP are 1/4
Once again
@educationgovuk
shows their lack of any care to the mental health of school leaders by dumping guidance on a Friday night before opening next week. We work hard to serve our communities and you continue to treat us with no regard whatsoever. I’ve had enough of you
If the Sue Gray report was an Ofsted report how many people would lose their jobs? The head? The whole governing body? The Trust board? Whole Trust removed?
The pressure on staff in schools to keep things ‘normal’, when absence is as high as it has been throughout the pandemic, is taking its toll. So many have run out of energy but keep pushing through. There’s always a consequence to this level of stress and it’s not good for anyone
Roughly 2% increase in per pupil funding but 5% increase in staff costs and 300% increase in utility costs. Please don’t talk about how much you are investing in education!
In case you didn’t know - parents from lower income households can still look after their children, they can value education, they can provide a suitable place to learn. Not all jobs are high paid. Mine raised 4 kids on 1 income; they valued education, they made sure we did. 1/2
Dear
@educationgovuk
emailing me every evening is not helpful and is beginning to feel like bullying. You can tell me the same thing over and over again it won’t make it any better or more achievable. Please do not send me another one tomorrow. It is Xmas Eve
Two and a half weeks until the end of term and we still cannot set a budget because you won’t release the pay information. You are causing stress and anxiety. We can’t plan activities for the children and you are letting them down.
@GillianKeegan
@halfon4harlowMP
@educationgovuk
Just to let you know PM I, along with thousands of others, did exactly what you asked us to do with regard to staying open and inviting students in. In fact we did more than you asked. We had to ignore much of your contradictory ‘guidance’ as you cannot get simple messaging right
How about the government makes schools close a week early for Xmas (say 10/12) thus giving student families and staff time to isolate long enough to have Xmas with their relatives?
I really hope that other unions don’t allow the NEU members to carry the burden of this sector wide issue.

“More strikes planned as teachers reject pay offer”
I feel an overwhelming sadness. I became a teacher to serve my community. Today I, and over 1500 colleagues, decided that the best way to do this was to march on Downing Street. No voter can think this has been done out of spite, it happened because we care
#StillnotListening
98% of our school NEU members are on strike today. Never seen such strong support. At least 8 new NEU members since announcement of action. Standing up for the community by saying enough is enough
Hearing of staff having to log the tasks they’ve completed each day, from the approved list, whilst working at home! Why? I am trying to work out if I missed a memo or something! Seems like a gloriously untrusting waste of time to me
No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no No no no no no no no no no
Having listened to our safeguarding lead talking about the section of KCSIE on neglect it is going to be harder to differentiate between neglect and circumstances this year.
My blue envelope has arrived. I have NEVER voted for action or been on strike. The fact that I am voting yes and yes makes me incredibly sad but doing anything else would be letting my community down. Also means the likelihood of being abused by keyboard warriors is high
Have built up a nice relationship with many production staff on GMB over the years. Was sad today to have to say I don’t want to go on due to unfair treatment of a comrade. I know they won’t care but they should. We are being put in the firing line and I don’t fancy being next.
I am sick of this govt now trying to look like they put the disadvantaged and vulnerable first. YOU DIDN’T EVEN THINK ABOUT FEEDING HUNGRY CHILDREN UNTIL WE MADE YOU!
Hard to look at the ‘offer’ as anything other than a show of contempt to the profession. Looks like the lowest offer given to any of those previously on strike. Why is that?
@GillianKeegan
Dear performance manager I’d like to set myself 5 targets with no timescale and no detail at all about how I’m going to achieve them. What do you mean that is worthless?
The last time we were in the ofsted window I worried myself sick. The impact on my mental health led to medication. We are back in the window and despite all that has happened in the last 5 years the system remains the same. I am responsible for the employment of 100s of people
A family has a year 10, 9 and 7 student. We decide to set lesson by lesson work for them. They have one device that I suitable between them. Who gets the chance to learn? Is it an even playing field to others? Do you care?
@educationgovuk
I think credit where credit is due. Underfunding - all yours. Lack of teachers - yours too. Special school provision on its knees through lack of investment - 3 from 3. Ofsted still no significant changes following Ruth - smashing it. Buildings unsafe - a clean sweep.
In government you need to take tough long-term decisions in the best interests of the country even if you don’t get the credit.
That’s what
@RishiSunak
& I are doing - delivering a brighter future for our children.
My interview in

To the colleagues, comrades and friends that will go to bed tonight hoping to sleep despite the gremlins of doubt in their head - good luck tomorrow. There is no doubt that the current levels of anxiety across educational leadership is unsustainable but we are stronger together.
I do think that SLT (the highest paid members of staff) should be mindful of moaning about having to move sports day etc whilst their staff are striking over not being able to pay their bills and the funding crisis hurting every child.
No change for schools. We must be even firmer in ensuring we have as few students and staff in as possible. Please don’t ask all/lots of staff to be in school. It is not the right thing to do for anyone
I have dedicated over 30 years to the education system and NEVER voted to strike. However, to continue to serve our young people we need the staff and the funding to be successful. I see it as my duty to vote yes on this occasion
A letter from
@GillianKeegan
on a Friday night but still tone deaf. Stop telling us how much you’ve increased funding etc when we see the reality of falling salaries, missed recruitment targets etc. Stop spinning statistics and recognise that you have not listened soon enough
Dear
@amanda_spielman
I am self reporting that we don’t offer any live video lessons. I will happily show one of your team what we are doing though. I know you won’t be fooled by a tech salesman in to thinking that any sort of condemnation of our approach is appropriate.
All mention of Ofsted removed from the new school prospectus for
@PassmoresAc
. If anyone wants to know how we did on those 2 days in 5 years they can look it up
I am struggling to keep my filter on with the complete and utter disregard
@educationgovuk
is showing us. Time to pour a drink and think of better things. The inhumanity and lack of empathy is quite astounding. I need to be better at not looking. Not worth the emotions they evoke
Having crunched the numbers I can confirm:
the pay offer is not fully funded and has to be covered by the savings already forced upon us
this is another tax on inclusive schools that employ more staff to support and will get ZERO funding for their pay increases
Contrary to a truly awful piece of newspaper spin in the Times today which had the headline ‘No work for pupils at reality TV school’ our young people are very busy doing the 7.5k worth of work and resources we send them every 3 weeks. I’m gutted
@SianGriffiths6
36 hours ago you said schools were definitely safe but today the whole country isn’t safe. My staff and community are worth more care and thought than you are showing them. How can we believe a word you say?
@BorisJohnson
For all those that keep telling us how cushy our job is and how well paid we are. Why does the government keep failing to recruit enough teachers? Teacher vacancies in England 93% higher than pre-pandemic, study finds | Teacher shortages | The Guardian
We need to speak truth to power now more than ever. As vulnerable as it makes me feel I’ll keep doing so (I teach maths so I’ll get a job). Happy to pass on the details of other willing heads when contacted by the media. ‘It’s heartbreaking’: The Guardian’
Nobody will force me to strike. If I feel there is no chance of the government listening and acting then they leave me no choice as a champion for my community. This personal attack in Parliament is a disgrace. Unions represent the workers and not the other way round
Awaiting an answer as to whether we can issue a supermarket voucher to families of FSM children up to the value of the funding we receive for them in the case of school closure. It is not a perfect solution but is a way of ensuring those families receive it
@educationgovuk
After yet another very public mental health related tragedy I do hope that people involved in long running spats on here stop and reflect and maybe just leave each other alone. We don’t need to make someone else’s life worse to make our own better.
#BeKindOrBeQuiet
This HAS to be the end of the accountability system in its current form. Impossible to justify imposing it on heads (and others) when this is the potential outcome. - “Ruth Perry: Ofsted inspection 'contributed' to head teacher's death”
Really tough day of having to have multiple groups in the hall due to the high number of staff Covid positive. Students were exemplary and the staff did a great job but it shouldn’t be happening.
It is always a terrible time to strike. The bit you don’t understand is that we’re trying to help children to have teachers in front of them and books to use. It’s in your power not ours.
@GillianKeegan
: ‘you couldn’t pick a worse time to strike’
I am on the ropes. Guard up. Just taking a beating with nothing to throw back. We have staff very seriously ill in hospital and have lost others to Covid and still we get tone deaf responses from our political leaders.
#TakingABeating
Just seen the disgraceful, personal attack on Lee Hill. I am sorry I missed it earlier. The people leading the attack should be ashamed. Quoting Ofsted reports from before he was head. Slinging mud to see what sticks. If you know Lee please pass on my unequivocal support
Like most schools our first day will have refreshers about safeguarding and how we need to notice the small stuff as it may well be the final piece of the jigsaw that rescues a child. This year it will be more important than ever as families battle real poverty. Hard to believe
I could have done with the PM actually addressing the concerns that adults in schools, and those we return to after, are going to have. We need the govt to work with us to achieve the shared goals. Once again headteachers are being left to make decisions without the info to help
If they need a venue available 24 hours a day for a few weeks in order to speed up the vaccine roll out I reckon there’s a few thousand schools that would be willing for their hall to be used. Get the vaccine out ASAP and start to heal all the damage we cam
I am flabbergasted with the ‘it’s only a handful of senior staff that are impacted by inspection’ line! Literally clueless of what goes on it seems. An interview of Prince Andrew proportions
I am so pleased that the government is using the (thankfully) low current death rate amongst education professionals as evidence to open our doors wider. I wonder if the lack of shoplifting in Woolworths means that they’ve got that cracked too?
My normal response to moronic things like this is ‘Melt’ but this time is worse. You are a despicable publication and could not care less about the health of my community. You disgust me
Our PM says public sector pay increases are higher than private in ‘many cases’. Average private sector pay growth = 6.9%. Average public sector pay growth = 2.7%. More spin and obfuscation
Today I am honoured to stand in for my friend Alan Simpson to walk his lovely daughter down the aisle. I know how proud he was of you and the family, Ashleigh, and I am humbled to be a part of it. And don’t worry Al I’ll give her stick in your speech. Family comes in many forms
To be found within current budgets! They have to be kidding. Letter template:
Dear Parents/Carers… I’m sorry we are going to have to lose more staff and cut more resources and opportunities for your children.
Don’t ask us why,we are as disgusted as you…
Yours…
Im sure there are lots of teachers dreading this conversation “I’m sorry your grade is 2 lower than the 4 mocks you did but someone decided last year’s results limit yours”.
What a disgraceful thing to say. My parents could never afford to send me private. They didn’t lack aspirations for me “The PM has previously said the policy showed Labour "just don't understand the aspiration of families like my parents who were working really hard".”
For those school/finance leaders that now have to redo their budgets, find tens of thousands of pounds in savings when school has broken up or does this week it is simply unfair and not good enough. Education as an after thought yet again from govt. #£100kHoleToFill
So the evidence is so clear in the PMs mind that he has made the school announcement a week early? Or is it a very obvious attempt to create a story that lots of people will react to rather than him failing in his duty to lead?
So 9 days to go until the end of term and still no announcements on pay and the funding of it. How on earth can we plan for next year when we don’t know how much we will or won’t have?
@educationgovuk
this is about children’s futures
This was not a mistake, it was deliberately misleading and has caused a great deal of damage - Education Secretary forced to admit that he wrongly claimed school spending is going up | The Independent
Now if only there was a plan to substantially rebuild the education estate. They could call it something like ‘building schools for future children’ or similar. I mean no one would cancel something like that knowing school buildings are unsafe!
If it is a lockdown but not for schools I hope the explanation we need to give to staff is given clearly tonight with data to back it up.
I hope the unions remember to work with heads and not just blame us and not just telling their members to not cooperate like last time.
We’ve seen the isolating nature of being a head when it comes to ofsted. There are, SENDCOs that have a unique role in school too. I wonder how their mh is throughout the ofsted process? SEND provision is part of everyone’s role but fingers are often pointed at the SENDCO
Did we have the latest technology etc? No. Did we and they invest time and effort in to our schooling? Yes. My dad left school at 14 but made sure we made the most of our time in education. Let’s give ALL families the tools they need and stop passing the buck
First day of the holidays but about 200 of us outside school to say goodbye. This is what community looks and feels like. I’ll miss my comrade and friend.
#FamilyComesInManyForms
Another drop off in numbers needing supervision. Thank you so much for the key workers that have found different arrangements so I can have even less staff in the building. So important that we get as close to lockdown as possible.
I am amazed at how uplifted and relieved I feel about the US result. A little hope in the world that the growth of populist leaders, that show no respect for the lives of all they lead, has been halted. Here’s to the others being the ‘victims’ of democracy!
Yet the system sends a handful of people, that are strangers to my community, for 2 days every 5 years and they have the ability to decimate 20+ years of being trusted to meet those responsibilities. Time for a change.
National catch up! Hilarious. We’ve failed to do this through education alone for decades but now the PM is going to let us know how it’ll wotk this time! Utter headline grabbing nonsense. Societal change alongside better resourced education will start this not more of the same
If someone wants to make a video to share - if someone wants to post a picture of their baking - if someone wants to share the fun they are having - good on them. If you don’t like it you don’t need to comment negatively. Do something other than being a melt.
#BeKind
Gavin Williamson opposed masks in schools during the pandemic because he was in ‘no surrender mode’ with trade unions and ‘didn’t want to give an inch’, according to WhatsApp messages submitted to the UK Covid inquiry
Amazing how many great teachers cannot explain why they are. Being a great teacher is not an accident or a gift of personality it is a result of deliberate practice. Give yourself the credit you deserve
Finishing budgets for next year. When is enough, enough? We can keep arbitrarily making cuts but I cannot accept that this generation of young people deserve less support, bigger classes and fewer resources. We’ll be told to make it balance but when is enough, enough?
This government and this PM won’t decide when any school opens for more students. They’ve shown themselves to have very bad judgement and therefore removed themselves from the process.
