I'll never forget my first Ofsted lesson observation, as an NQT, when they said I couldn't rely on this level of energy to engage and enthuse my class as it would diminish as I got older. I hope they get to watch this, 20 years later. 🤔
Ruth Perry Inquest today:
Ofsted Inspector, Gareth Evans, said that during inspections "we more often see people crying than not".
Any process that makes people cry more often than not, would suggest that the process is wrong & needs to change.

Despite my vast years of experience/classical training, can confirm that Deputy Head Girl unanimously won Yorkshire Pudding-Gate Dance Off. My head stand, figure-hugging elf suit & world-class dad-dancing just wasn't enough in the end. Happy kids definitely make better learners❤️
Guarantee made that the food of Gods, Yorkshire Puddings, will be provided to all pupils next year at their Christmas Lunch.
I love the positive relationships we have with our parents and children - happy kids make better learners - and very much works for behaviour.

I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s been our dream to open a school coffee shop. We’ve always wanted a place for our community to come together, a welcoming space for agencies/groups to work with & help our families & take our offering to another level. There’s still a bit to do
THE CALL
Imagine having a really important interview that you’ve prepared years for and you badly want to ace. You’ve worked as hard as you could and have committed your life to it.
Imagine every night going to bed, wondering if it’ll be the next day. But it doesn’t come that
WHO’S SAFEGUARDING MY COLLEAGUES?
Really appreciate everyone who’s got in touch with their support after my appearance on BBC Breakfast where I talked honestly about why Ofsted must change. So glad people are finally feeling able to speak up.
(Thanks for the vid

Huge thanks to everyone for the kind words & support after speaking up about Ofsted this morning on BBC Breakfast - now for Radio 5 after 8. “Who’s safeguarding me and my colleagues?” seems to be the phrase that has really resonated with people.

Things that just make me smile:
-Seeing people putting the bins out in their dressing gown
-The little wave people do to say thanks at Zebra Crossings
-People who let you go before them at the till if you have less items
-People who smile as you pass them
What would you add?
Please do me a favour & click like if you agree that now is the perfect time to start to completely re-evaluate what, how & why we do what we do in schools. We now live in a very different world & our Education System needs to reflect what our kids need to succeed in a new age.
Am on BBC Breakfast sofa after 7am tomorrow to talk about why Ofsted must change. I’ve always been afraid to go so public with my thoughts but can’t do it any more, for well-being of our profession. Please DM/comment below if you have any stories/points you think I should mention
Just been to pick up my prescription & always feels like a big deal. Let the success of Ofsted reform be judged on how many people come off these in 2024.
Oh God, I could cry, I cannot believe the number of fellow Heads and teachers reaching out to say that they're on medication, too.
Things. Must. Change.

Can officially confirm that dance off challenge with Deputy Head Girl was successfully completed earlier today. It got a little lively with most of school getting up & joining in, so now need to check that those who gate crashed video have permission to appear on social media! 🕺🏻
Or, huge well done & thanks to all those working incredibly hard in schools for the best of their children over this tough last half-term. We recognise that things are more challenging than usual & appreciate the lengths colleagues are going to, in order to support our children &
Last year, school strikes resulted in 25 million school days being lost cumulatively.
Children should not have to suffer a repeat of this disruption.
I’m announcing that we will introduce minimum service levels in schools so that pupils get the education they need and deserve.
WHY ARE WE STRIKING? (A POETIC THREAD)
We’re striking for the child who’s in the wrong place,
Needs specialist provision, but they ain’t got the space.
For the child who’s behind and suffers with stress,
We’d offer them more, but we’re offering them less. (1/9)

Well done on your dramas becoming the fast-track way to fight injustices.
Please could you now do a drama on SEND funding.
Thank you in anticipation of your support,
A hopeful headteacher

Last week, I cried.
I cried because of the impact chronic underfunding is having in schools.
I cried for what it is doing to the child who we can’t get the additional support for.
I cried for what it does to the families, desperate for help.
I cried for the stress it causes
Whilst I try to figure out if kids in Deputy Head Girl Dance Off video are allowed online, here's our BGT Golden Buzzer from a while back to give an idea of some of the world-class dance moves you might see. It's also a reminder that anything is possible when you

Just watching new BGT series & still not sure how we got a Golden Buzzer & made it to finals of one of biggest shows on TV.
If we can do that,
@Ofstednews
can make changes we know need to happen for good of our colleagues & profession.

5am & been awake an hour worrying about unfunded pay-rises & impact on budget, whether we’ll make it to the holidays without getting the Ofsted call & what more we can do to support the kids who need us most in a broken system no longer fit for purpose. Things have to change.
If Ofsted come next week, I really hope they enjoy school trips, sports days, awards ceremonies and the circus. Inspections should stop at summer half term - nobody needs the extra stress.
23 years of teaching (13 as head) & I've never seen anything like the challenges facing education at the moment. Shout out to the TAs, teachers & leaders giving their all & showing huge resilience, especially those new to role, I promise it's not always like this. Keep going.
A first draft of a Code of Conduct for Ofsted inspections...
Welcome to our school!
We strive to maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all visitors, staff, and students. To ensure everyone feels respected and valued, we ask that you abide by the following code of
When you end up going to the doctors every time you're in the Ofsted window, you know something needs to change. We have a duty of care to colleagues to speak up. This is one of few things we could improve, quickly/cheaply. Time to safeguard each other & future of our profession.
Have any rural schools ever used sheep dogs to help get Reception new starters in to assemblies and round them up at the end of lunchtime? Asking for a friend.
We now have a once in lifetime opportunity to re-evaluate what's important in schools, post-Covid. This generation may never fully catch-up on content of current curriculum but could excel in a new one that prioritises self-esteem, confidence, flexibility, innovation & resilience
Starting to notice that colleagues are already feeling tired in school & summer is a way off yet. Some children’s behaviour becoming more challenging & feel we may be seeing impact of Covid more clearly. Need to look after our well-being & pace ourselves, still a long way to go.
Been a tough gig as a headteacher over the last 48 hours but my little girl has just told me that I’m her best daddy in the whole wide world and all feels a little bit better in life.
Could anyone with an issue about me speaking up about Ofsted, what it does to us & need for pause/reform pls do me a favour & unfollow or block me. I’m not on my own & won’t be stopping any time soon, a week of deferrals isn’t fooling anyone, but we’ll enjoy it whilst it lasts.
Have done our Nativity a little differently this year- parents move from class to class (scene to scene) like you might at a theatre-in-the-park experience. So much easier for year groups to practise on their own/when it suited & got rid of huge amount of sitting around for kids.
Do you know what we’re all feeling tonight? It’s belonging. We’re all sat at home, watching the same thing, thinking the same thoughts, feeling the same feelings and it’s absolutely lovely. Belonging is everything.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen school staff so tired & really worry about their well-being. Feels a little bit like watching them in the last few hundred yards of a marathon & the legs of even the strongest are starting to go. We all really need to look after one another right now.
At school, we ask the children to admit when they’ve made a mistake, to fix whatever damage has been done and to not repeat the choices they made. If it’s what we expect from our children, it should be what we expect from our Prime Minister.

Can honestly say that I feel so much better being able to speak openly & honestly about Ofsted & the impact on my mental health. Finally feel empowered to speak up for what we've all known, all along, that things must change. I hope it's encouraged other people to do the same.
If the DfE want to know about working conditions, they should ask the sons and daughters of teachers, they'll tell you exactly what they see their parents experiencing. Did this earlier in the week and it was quite a powerful experience.
Just a little bit concerning when a lead inspector is posting to tell me that I’m in the minority when I am critical of Ofsted and that the vast majority of leaders are positive about the framework. Reminds me of the Post Office but can’t think why….
Now inquiry in to Yorkshire Pudding-Gate has drawn to a conclusion, we are in a position to release video evidence of Deputy Head Girl Dance Off tomorrow. Please be advised that anyone who is easily offended by tight-fitting elf costumes on middle-aged men may want to look away.
Always wondered what it’d be like to get rid of my Head’s office & have a shared Leadership Team space & now I know- it’s fantastic! Definitely one of our best decisions, such a better, more supportive & collaborative way to work & been invaluable over last few months
#edutwitter
I want a post-Covid education that lets no child feel like a failure, one where we find each child's talents & allow them to grow & then feel pride in their achievements. Too many go through school feeling like they're not a success but we're over-valuing & measuring wrong things
The law says you have to let Ofsted in to school.
The law also says you have to protect the health of colleagues.
Which one should leaders choose?
Asking for a friend.
Really appreciate lovely people who’ve checked in on me, thank you. I’m good, finally feel strong enough to say the things I’ve wanted to say about Ofsted for so long. We must speak up & make our voices heard, appreciate all who have done so & respect some may not be ready/able.
Have spoken to hundreds of heads & teachers across England who are all saying exactly the same - the number of children who need additional support in schools is unprecedented.
We need significantly more SEN provision, proper funding and a Plan B.
Councils and Govt need to
Blown away by support after my appearance on BBC Breakfast, so many people are now talking openly about Ofsted & need for change. Tide definitely turning & hopefully positive change will happen soon. In meantime, would be v. grateful if you signed this:
Thank you to those who have sent supportive messages after my little wobble earlier, was coming from a good place. Instead of a glass of wine, I’ve been for a run, put some candles on and had crisps in the bath. I’ll be reet.
Staff in schools have never worked harder or felt more stress/pressure & the situation is unsustainable. We might not be able to conjure up the funding we all know the system drastically needs, but we can change how we do some things, starting with the Ofsted process.

🥲
All the evidence shows mobile phones are bad for children's concentration, yet nearly one in three pupils report phones being used in lessons.
So today, we're delivering on our promise to ban mobile phones in schools.
My article 👇
If our little working class school from up north can nearly win one of the biggest TV shows on the planet, our unions can get Ofsted paused and reformed.
Realised I didn’t have my key to lock the front door of school and, a full 24 hours later, I’m still proud of thinking to lock it from the inside and managing to leg it to the fire exit at the other end of school without setting the alarm off.
#Leadership
Our profession has finally realised that speaking up about Ofsted is better for our mental health than not doing so. Thank you to everyone who is normalising the public conversations.

Appreciate I’ve tweeted a lot about Ofsted, I know I’ve been like a dog with a bone in speaking up & some people probably think I’m a bit obsessed & should give it a break. But, I’m only saying what so many people think but many don’t yet feel confident to enough to voice
Can’t stop thinking about the children who are being taught in the wrong place because of the lack of sufficient funding/ special school places. The impact on that child, their family, classmates, teachers & school leaders is unforgivable & lasting. We all know the headlines, but
🚨YORKSHIRE PUDDING NEWS!🚨
Last year, we received an official complaint from our Deputy Head Girl about the lack of Yorkshire Puddings on the children’s Christmas Lunch.
In keeping with our philosophy of asking our children to fix their mistakes, we are happy to confirm that
Whilst Gillian Keegan is asking for thanks, brilliant teachers like this are quietly making class sets of these inventions to keep tables tidy out of her own pocket in the holidays. The lengths our profession go to for the children is something else.
Always is, always will be.
Thank you to lovely people who checked in on me after my Ofsted posts (incl. Citalopram one). I’m ok, honest, just feel strongly about subject matter- accountability should be supportive process & talking about mental health should be same as talking about a broken leg.
