I began my medical career at the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis, and I've spent my life ever since working to research, treat, and combat infectious diseases. I'm honored to be called to lead the brilliant team at the CDC. We are ready to combat this virus with science and facts.

If I have a cup of water, I can put out a stove fire. But I can’t put out a forest fire, even if that water is 100% potent. That’s why everyone must wear a mask. As a nation, we’ll recover faster if you give the vaccine less work to do when it's ready.

Government service was never part of my plans. But every doctor knows that when a patient is coding, your plans don’t matter. You run to the code. And when a nation is coding—if you are called to serve, you serve.

The largest burden of COVID-19 deaths has fallen on people over 65, but young people are also dying at historic rates. There's been ~12,000 more deaths than expected among young adults. So wear a mask, be safe. Do your part as the vaccine is distributed.

Am I hopeful we will have a vaccine in the coming months? Yes. Do I think this will get us back to pre-Covid reality? No. Vaccines take a long time to get to people, often have stumbles in rollout, and don’t protect perfectly. Very important, but won’t end Covid.

I so worry that while we are working so hard on one pandemic, another is re-emerging out of check while we’ve so briefly taken our eye off the ball. #EHE ! @CarlosdelRio7 @Armstrws @RMKGandhi @HIVMA @drmt

"IDSA & HIVMA call for the immediate reversal of the abrupt revision of the CDC COVID-19 testing guidelines which diminish the importance of testing asx individuals who were exposed to COVID-19." Thank you @IDSAInfo ! @CarlosdelRio7 @gregggonsalves @cnn

Senators should have the same rules as kindergarteners when 1 is positive for Covid...approx half the senators have expected mortality rates from Covid-19 >1,000X higher than the rates for elementary school students. @drJoshS @MassGeneralNews @NBCNews

The #ID community mourns the loss of Dr. Cathy Wilfert, MD. "Dr. Wilfert theorized that by reducing the VL of infected mothers, she could diminish the amount of virus their babies were exposed to, thereby reducing HIV transmission from mother to baby..." @IDSAInfo @mgh_id

Always a pleasure to be on @theleadCNN with Jake Tapper. A tough day of realization, as the country heard from Dr. Fauci @NIAID that daily cases could soar to 100,000. #WearAMask @mgh_id

“It took a month of being shut down, of being in stay-at-home orders, to curb this,” says Mass General Chief of Infectious Diseases Dr. Rochelle Walensky, on Covid-19. “We need some pretty drastic measures... today, so we can start hoping to see benefits a month from now.”

Please listen to Dr. Fauci caution us to be patient and avoid leapfrogging lifting #SocialDistancing restrictions too soon as “almost certainly cases will rebound”. @theNASciences
