Dad, husband, doctor, author, 19th & 21st Surgeon General of the United States. This is my personal account. For official updates, follow
@Surgeon_General
.
I never dreamed I’d have the honor to once again serve as Surgeon General. In this moment of crisis, I’m grateful for the opportunity to help end this pandemic, be a voice for science, and support our nation on its path to rebuilding and healing.
The White House attacks on Dr. Fauci are unfair and dangerous. He's been right on
#COVID19
far more than the politicians who blame him. During pandemics, science is your guide-even if it's politically inconvenient. Covid is surging. We need to hear more from scientists, not less.
Honored to be sworn in as your Surgeon General. I owe this day to my family who has guided & supported me every step of the way. I stand ready to work with you to end this pandemic & build a world where good health is within everyone’s grasp. Follow
@Surgeon_General
for updates.
As
#COVID19
cases surge, let’s remember there is no shame in feeling frustrated, scared, and fatigued. It doesn’t mean we’re weak. It means we’re human. The only way we get through this pandemic is by looking out for supporting one another. Pandemics are best fought together.
THREAD: Yesterday, I spoke with doctors from one of the nation’s leading academic hospitals located in a state where
#COVID19
cases are increasing quickly. This is what they told me: They've been seeing *many* patients with symptoms concerning for COVID19 who need testing (1/x)
I'm deeply grateful to be confirmed by the Senate to serve once again as your Surgeon General. We've endured great hardship as a nation over the past year, and I look forward to working with you to help our nation heal and create a better future for our children.
#TogetherWeRise
The best doctor is not an authority figure who writes prescriptions, but rather a partner in healing — someone who sees patients in their fullest humanity and empowers them to take charge of their health.
That’s what I will always strive to be as America’s Doctor.
So if you are reading the news about games being cancelled, schools being suspended, and people avoiding group events due to
#COVID19
- and if you're wondering if it's an overreaction, the answer is no. The earlier we act, the more lives we save. Period. (10/x END)
We need a national stay at home order. Needed it weeks ago. It remains the most powerful tool we have at this moment to reduce the spread of
#covid19
. The reluctance to call for such a policy represents a critical failure of federal leadership that will cost lives. (1/x)
It’s 2am and all I can think about is that in hospitals and clinics across America, my friends and colleagues are going to war against
#COVID19
with no protection. Would we ever accept sending soldiers into battle without armor? (1/x)
As I take the stand this morning, I want to dedicate my confirmation hearing to my Uncle Raman who recently passed away from COVID-19. I am thinking of him and all of my family, friends, and mentors who have supported me over the years. Today is their day, too.
Looking forward to being sworn in as Surgeon General by
@HHSgov
@SecBecerra
tomorrow. It's an honor I never dreamed I'd have again, and I'm ready to get started. To join us, tune in to
@Surgeon_General
at 9am ET.
At 2am last night, my 2 year old woke up crying and scared. I did what parents do – I held him and comforted him until he fell asleep. What happens to the 2000+ children separated from their parents when they wake up at night? This is morally indefensible.

"You do not have to have personal ambition to be a leader. You do not have to be the loudest person in the room. You can believe in consensus more than you believe in conflict. You can be human. You can feel & show emotion. You can be kind, empathetic & strong"

Because our visibility into the spread of COVID19 in the U.S. is so compromised due to lack of testing, it makes it even more urgent that we be aggressive about mitigation efforts like physical distancing so we can reduce the likelihood of further spread. (9/x)
So the hospital is saving their test requests for only those who are severely ill - such as those with ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) who have tested negative for other conditions (like influenza). In other words, they are having to ration tests. (3/x)
But they are unable to get the *vast majority* of them COVID19 testing. Their only resource for testing is the state lab. But the state lab is severely limited in capacity and it will take another few weeks for the hospital lab to implement its own test. (2/x)
This is happening at one of the *top hospitals in the United States of America.* And they are not alone. This is the daily struggle for hospitals and clinics across America. (7/x)
The doctors I spoke with are worried and scared. They know this isn’t the best way to take care of patients. And they are putting their own health at risk in the process. (6/x)
They also don’t have enough personal protective equipment. The doctors and nurses are having to reuse masks which they know is risky but they have no other choice. They are worried about running out of gowns and gloves as well. (5/x)
For patients who do get tested, it is taking several days for the test to come back during which time their contacts (including doctors and nurses) have to be quarantined, taking them out of the workforce right when we need them the most. (4/x)
Waiting now for my father who just went in to get his
#COVID19
vaccine. So proud of him. He’s in his 70s and continued to care for patients during the pandemic. Feeling overcome with all the feelings of 2020-the tragedy, uncertainty, pain, and now this ray of light.
What do strong leaders do when people are in pain?
1) Show up
2) Listen w/ compassion
3) Acknowledge the truth
4) Offer help
5) Unite people around shared values
6) Chart an honest, inclusive path forward
7) Lead with love, not fear
That's the moral leadership America needs now
I hope we will honor the memory of those we lost this year by joining hands to build a safer, healthier, more joyful world in 2021.

While we may come from different backgrounds,
#COVID19
has reminded us that when it comes to our health, we’re all deeply connected. I’m eager to work with communities across our country to end this pandemic and build a healthier future for all Americans.
Years ago when my parents moved to Miami, they set about planting their favorite childhood fruits and flowers in our backyard. This green fellow behind me is from a few days ago. Any ideas what it is? Bonus points if you have a favorite dish with this fruit.
The highest priorities in vaccine development are safety and efficacy. Period. Speed is important but secondary. No amount of political pressure should ever compel the FDA to compromise these standards. To do so would mean lasting damage to public faith in vaccines.

After a few long days with both kids sick, now listening to the quiet breathing of my son as he sleeps on my shoulder. In awe that a simple sound can bring such peace.

As we learn more about the lives lost in Atlanta, I see my own immigrant story in theirs. The rise in Anti-Asian violence should outrage all who believe in an inclusive, compassionate America. We must stand up for one another. It doesn't just get better—we have to make it better.
2 years ago, I began an unexpected journey: to write a book on social connection and loneliness. It was inspired by my patients, people I met as Surgeon General, and my own struggles. I'm thrilled to share that the book - TOGETHER - launches today.
I can’t express how happy it made me today to find my dad sitting in his recliner, happily reading my new book, Together. Since I was in college, he has been urging me to write a book. He waited 25 years but never lost faith. It wouldn’t have happened without him.

Big News: Missouri voted tonight to expand Medicaid which will bring health insurance coverage to more than 200,000 residents. I'm thinking tonight of all the uninsured patients I cared for over the years. We must continue the march toward universal coverage.
Today, the US announced steps to support
#India
during its unprecedented wave of
#COVID19
infections. It has been painful to watch the suffering and loss that so many have endured. The only way to address a global pandemic is global cooperation and mutual support.
Many of us have seen the heartbreaking & horrifying toll of COVID-19 in India in recent days.
Today's statement outlines concrete steps being taken by the United States to help address the crisis. The uncontrolled spread of COVID-19 anywhere presents a threat to all nations. /1
Our job in public health is to lead with science, compassion, and truth. That last one is hard during polarized times when even stating the truth can make you seem biased or political. But that's when it's all the more urgent to stand up for truth clearly and with conviction. 1/x
If an EUA for
#COVID19
vaccine is managed like today’s convalescent plasma announcement, we are in trouble. We need to know the process for evaluating safety/efficacy is based on science not politics. Today’s announcement did not provide that assurance. We must do better. 1/x
“You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."
Timeless words from Dr. King on this
#MLKDay
. It is through our service that we help one another heal.
If social media companies can’t police misinformation, they should shut down their platforms. Misinformation leads people to forego life saving vaccines. It sways elections. It poisons dialogue and corrodes society. Breathtaking damage is being done with no accountability.
Wishing a swift recovery to President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and the 43,000+ people who tested positive for
#COVID19
today. Too many have suffered and lost their lives due to this virus. I hope we will come together at last to build a unified response to the pandemic.

We lives in such polarized times that sometimes speaking the truth can be seen as political. But that doesn’t mean the truth isn’t worth standing up for and fighting for. In the early days of HIV, doctors were seen as political because they publicly urged government action. (1/x)
Millions of kids, including mine, are waking up knowing that someone who looks like them and shares their heritage can serve in one of the nation's highest offices. The promise of America that inspired my parents and generations of immigrants lives on. So grateful.
#KamalaHarris
That’s what happening now. In the richest nation in the world. We need to use every resource and authority available to ramp production of personal protective equipment (PPE). Pull out the stops. Health care workers have stepped up. It’s long past time we had their backs. (3/x)
Yet doctors, nurses, and other health care workers are working without masks, reusing gloves, running out of gowns, and now falling sick themselves.They're putting their lives at risk because we have failed to get them the help they need despite warnings this day was coming.(2/x)
My 3 year old woke me up at 4am today. Sitting next to him as he fell asleep, I couldn’t help but worry about how
#covid19
is affecting him and his sister. Sometimes it doesn’t matter if you’re a doctor or public health professional - in the end you’re just a worried parent. (1/)
Is it necessary for all states to have such an aggressive policy? Yes. Because we are still struggling to test, we have no idea what the real case count is but it’s likely many multiples higher than the recorded numbers and the virus is in far more places than we think. (2/x)
What message do we send our kids when we support politicians who fail to meet the character standards we ask of our children? We tell our kids: be honest, take responsibility, be kind, apologize for your mistakes, clean up your messes. Shouldn’t we demand the same of our leaders?
The bottom line is this: when it comes to public health response SPEED = LIVES SAVED. We had a slow start in responding to
#covid19
and we are trying to catch up. But we need to move faster. Every day matters. (3/x END)
A beautiful, heartfelt tribute from the wonderful
@celinegounder
to her late husband Grant. And a powerful reminder that the growing wave of health misinformation puts all of us at risk. Wishing peace and healing for Céline in the days ahead.
3 key points on masks and
#COVID19
:
1. Masks are low cost life savers.
2. We need universal mask mandates. Waiting for an outbreak to mask up is acting too late.
3. Our government should be making billions of good quality masks for the PUBLIC. They are a best buy (see
#1
).
For the WH to assert it may overrule FDA guidance on vaccine standards is inappropriate and only further erodes public trust. People want vaccine approval determined by scientists not politicians. There is 1 path to a safe, effective
#COVID19
vaccine: let scientists do their job.
While I will neither confirm nor deny that
@ezraklein
and I are the same person, I will say I thoroughly enjoyed our recent conversation below about
#COVID19
, leadership, and building trust. The road ahead will be tough, but the future is bright.
“We are so focused on action, that things like pausing to listen feel almost like dereliction of duty,”
@vivek_murthy
says on 'The Ezra Klein Show.' Listening shows people they matter, Dr. Murthy says, and that's key to beating vaccine hesitancy.
Grateful to
#RBG
for a lifetime of service to our nation. She spoke up for justice and equality especially when it was hard. She led with conviction. And she inspired millions across generations. Dark as this day may be, her light will be with us for many years to come.
Thinking about
#GeorgeFloyd
's tragic death tonight, I'm reminded of the haunting, timely words of
@donberwick
: "To try to avoid the political fray through silence is impossible, because silence is now political. Either engage, or assist the harm. There is no third choice."
Waiting for election results can be extremely stressful. A few things may help: 1) Turn off the news/social media. 2) Take a walk or work out. Movement loosens the mind. 3) Help others. Service reduces our suffering and lets us experience the healing power of human connection.
NEW: The United States will support waiving intellectual property protections for
#COVID19

The only way global pandemics end is with global cooperation and mutual aid.

I am deeply worried that our failure to follow science in our response has led to the loss of thousands of lives and serious damage to our health and well being. I will continue to call for a more honest, effective approach to
#COVID19

Writing this with
@atychen
brought tears to my eyes. It's a love letter to our brothers and sisters on the front lines of
#COVID19
- the doctors, nurses, and countless heroes who are risking their lives to care for the ill. Help us share it with them.
NEW: U.S. announces plan to share AstraZeneca
#COVID19
vaccine doses with the world. 60 million doses to be shared as they become available.
Global pandemics require global cooperation.
The WH decision not to investigate and contact trace the Rose Garden
#COVID19
cluster is misguided and frankly dangerous. Exposed people won’t get tested or quarantined. Spread will continue. Choosing not to find cases doesn’t make them any less deadly.
Promising News: early data today from a second

Key principle in responding to
#coronavirus
: scientists should speak directly to the public. When science is run through a political filter, truth is compromised. Public trust breaks down. Scientists like Tony Fauci should speak without censorship.

Amazing. Oklahoma's ballot initiative to participate in Medicaid expansion just passed. It will bring health insurance coverage to nearly 200,000 state residents. A bright spot in dark times.
This 87 year old woman called the Italian police to say she was hungry and lonely. They came and cooked her pasta and reminded her that she was not alone. 😇
Chocolate chip pancakes for the kids this morning. Each one is irregular and no two are the same....I’m telling them it’s a metaphor for humanity (but it’s really just my poor culinary skills).
A teacher once told me childhood treats are more than food. They are the love your mother gave you as a child. He must’ve been thinking about my mother’s homemade fruit cake which she just surprised me with. One of the many gifts and memories she has given me over the years.
One result of widespread prolonged wait times for
#COVID19
test results: we are paying lab companies millions of dollars for week-old results that are effectively useless. We'd be better off using these funds for schools, so they can help make it safer for our kids to return.
How to stay safe as
#COVID19
worsens:
1) Stay home whenever possible. If you can't,
2) Wear a mask
3) Stay 6 ft apart
4) Wash your hands often
5) Avoid crowds

Without honest, transparent communication, you can’t build trust. When public trust evaporates, you’ve lost one of the most essential assets you need in the face of a crisis. Trust must be earned and preserved above all. (8/x END)

"I think you realize how much you need to have people that you love. It's not as much about them loving you - it's about you needing to love people."
So much wisdom and inspiration from Chadwick Boseman over the years. He will be deeply missed.
Heartbroken at the passing of

. I met him only once but remember clearly his humility, gentle manner, and big heart. May his extraordinary courage and service always inspire us. May we pick up where he left off in building a world that is more just, loving, and kind.
When I grow weary of our polarization, I think of this quote from MLK who lived through times even more divided and angry.
“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.”
And I'm reminded we all have that force within us -love- that can help us heal.
All this time spent repeatedly debunking

Today at dinner, our little girl declared she wanted to go to school. I couldn't help but think how many other kids feel the same. Had our elected leaders heeded the

advice of scientists, our kids may have had that chance. It's not too late, but time is running out.
Leana Wen is one of the most courageous, passionate, and brilliant physician leaders I know. She has inspired people around the country with her vision for a more just and fair healthcare system. Thank you
@DrLeanaWen

Final Thoughts: Speaking the truth may be perceived as partisan in a polarized environment. But that is why it is all the more important that we defend the truth and protect the truth tellers at all costs. (7/x)

Be transparent and truthful - this creates trust, accountability, and allows people to get valuable information. There is tremendous pressure in the middle of a crisis to over promise while also glossing over tough news. You must resist that urge. (2/x)
#4
: Lead with scientists and science - science must triumph over politics when guiding a nation through a pandemic. The price of not doing so is measured in human suffering and lives lost. Communication must be led by scientists and policies must be grounded in science. (5/x)
I wouldn’t mind seeing a statue of this American hero to remind us what true leadership looks like. Thank you

59 years ago today I was released from Parchman Farm Penitentiary after being arrested in Jackson, MS for using a so-called "white" restroom during the Freedom Rides of 1961.
