Hey
@elonmusk
. I have a challenge for you. If you agree to do an ICU or COVID-19 floor shift, I will find you a colleague in a Midwest hospital willing to let you shadow them. You can learn about how many covid-19 cases are “real”.
The thing that really gets me is when someone says they won’t wear a mask because the virus (0.1 micron but generally attached to a bigger droplet) will get through anyway but is also concerned about fainting from C02 molecules (0.00033 microns) not passing through the same mask.
There you go. It's on record. I stand with science and thoughtfulness in public health response.
#IStandWithFauci
"Experts: Dr. Fauci’s record is stellar; sidelining him would be a mistake"
In case you were wondering what elicited this. It's not just Musk questioning his rapid test results but following up w this. Most people are not yet getting rapid tests he uses. People will now treat their results as false positive and go around infecting others.
What does
@GovRonDeSantis
think his job is? Does he think it’s that reporter’s job figure out why high risk patients in his state are sleeping overnight in lines to get a vaccine?
Unbelievable. Here is your answer for why we are failing at vaccinations in this country.
Take a deep breath.
Exhale.
Take another one.
Quick reminder: Your life problems are not your life. They are transient and fleeting. Your life is something longer, more majestic. It’s something you have power over. It’s the deep water beneath the waves.
Dear Dr Redfield
@CDCDirector
I have just heard from colleagues that this is as insane as it sounds.
@CDCgov
, America’s public health agency, is no longer going to be first in line to receive this data. Sir, this is a travesty. I urge you to speak up.
Breaking News: The Trump administration ordered hospitals to bypass the CDC and send key coronavirus information to a Washington database, alarming health officials
To figure out if we have reached endemicity with a disease, we have to answer the question: Can our society function if current moment became status quo?
The surge of cases leading to worker shortages & still overwhelmed hospitals tells us for COVID, the answer currently is NO.
I want to share something personal.
2 days ago, I walked my mom through her COVID vaccine appt for her 1st shot.
I have been doing a happy dance since knowing she is now building immunity.
I love her.
I can’t bear the idea of losing her.
I want this feeling for everyone.
Yesterday was my last day in the Biden Administration.
It has been a privilege to serve our nation while working on things that matter to all of us including pandemic preparedness, our global Covid response, & our drive for next generation vaccines & treatments.
I hope one thing that comes out of this last year is that all graduate science and medical schools realize the importance of having training in science communication as part of their students education.
Denali National Park, Alaska. I took this photo during a hike in 2017. After the pandemic, hope to make it further north to the Gateway to The North park.
Having said that- I am all for better quality masks if that’s the argument. All masks help. Some masks clearly work better.
Get good masks, get vaccinated, get tested.
This isn’t the common cold. And it isn’t Ebola. It’s harder to tackle covid-19 because it’s in the in between space.
Society doesn’t know how to handle the risk that does nothing to some & takes everything from others. It’s testing our individual focused post post modern culture
Testing clearly does not cause cases. It helps identify cases already in the community so we can respond more quickly. And the fact that test positivity rate is going up in many states tells us that we are falling behind on testing.

Periodic reminder that elective surgeries aren't optional. They are necessary medical procedures which don't yet have to be taken to OR emergently. So in essence, Texas is stopping medical care before they stop happy hours.
I have news for people who are looking at the unfortunate loss of Colin Powell as a sign that covid-19 vaccines are not working: Almost no vaccines prevent ALL infections & deaths. Older & immunocompromised pts always depend on the rest of us to create population level immunity.
On my way to get my COVID19 shot! I’m so thankful to all those in vaccine research & the trial volunteers for helping us find a safe and efficacy vaccine.
We still need to keep up our vigilance- 😷 🙌 ↔️. And this is one more way we start to end this pandemic.

This is not a normal person. These claims are an insult to the almost quarter of a million people who have died of this disease. This should not be the person leading us through a worldwide tragedy.
Wow -- Trump pushes a baseless conspiracy theory that US coronavirus deaths are overcounted because "doctors get more money and hospitals get more money" if they say people died of Covid instead of other co-morbidities they might have
Some big personal news.
I am honored to join

as the Senior Policy Advisor for Global COVID-19 Response. I am humbled to have the opportunity to serve my country & to continue working with our global partners.
Adding my co-sign to this. It’s time to consider dropping outdoor mask mandates. Evidence is strong on low outdoor risk now. (I may still wear them in large stationary crowds in close proximity).
But let me go for my run maskless. Mask in pocket.

It feels like states & feds are treating this vaccine rollout like business as usual, which it isn't. It isn't flu vaccinations, it's not even H1N1. This is akin to a war or a natural disaster. Parts of our healthcare system are collapsing, running out of staff, oxygen, beds.
Get your flu shot. It’s even more important than most years: reduces hospitalizations in middle of pandemic, protects you, protects those around you if you are protected. It’s a win win. I get a flu shot EVERY YEAR without fail.
What’s happening in India and Brazil right now is a nightmarish tragedy.
With commitment, we discovered, trialed & approved vaccines in 12 months. With commitment, we can achieve global vaccine access & production. This is cannot be business as usual.
Agreed. And also we should start with releasing a standard for masks available to consumers. It’s unconscionable that we have the largest use of PPE by American public in history & the quality of these masks is not being moderated, standardized or regulated.
Instead of double-masking, governments in South Korea & other countries got high-filtration masks to their populations
We need a federal effort to do the same in the US
Sometimes I feel like I am wasting my breath.
But then I remember, maybe all this wasted breath means one person continues to take theirs.
And even if not, at least this is me still trying.
#GetVaccinated
Listen to what all of us in public health are saying: This was a bad week for public trust in our public health institutions. This is not normal. It’s a crisis of faith. We need signs & assurance that CDC, FDA, NIH can maintain independence from the White House political pressure
Bit by bit, the FDA & CDC's strengths have been pecked away to insure fealty to the President instead of the people. The damage will take years to undo. For those who devoted our lives to serving the health of those people, I cannot express how difficult seeing this is.
I am one step closer to being immune to COVID19! I encourage you to take your shot when you are up for it. Too many have lost their jobs, lives, health, loved ones. This pandemic has exacted a bloody toll. Let's work together to end its reign.

VP Biden will likely be retested as he is still within the incubation period. If he was exposed on Tuesday, not enough time has passed to necessarily progress to infection.
Fingers crossed he never does. My sincere good wishes for the continued good health of everyone exposed.
I think we need to mentally prepare that no matter what happens on November 3rd, the months after are going to be painful. Reach in there and find that last bit of mental resilience, friends.
This is a big deal. Malaria kills over 400k people annually (two thirds of which are kids under 5) and it cost $3 billion in 2019 to control.
A vaccine against malaria would not only change individual health but also shape of the global demographics and regional economies.
What can you do about
#Nu
today?
-be concerned, don’t panic
-No variants so far have totally escaped immune memory-best bet is still to get vaccinated & boosted.
-Be vigilant to reduce risk of exposure
-if sick, get tested
-if you traveled, get tested
-advocate for vaccine equity
We cannot have it both ways: open society in the middle of a pandemic and refuse to do the hard work at the public health and public level to prevent new infections.
Around 1000 Americans still die every day from this disease. We have just become numb to it.
As new hotspots continue to emerge, I offer this promise I first made months ago:
This virus WILL continue to cause rolling outbreaks across the country until we take it seriously and respond appropriately.
Instead we’ve declared ‘mission accomplished’ in the middle of battle.
Got my flu shot today. Have you gotten yours yet?
Seasonal flu is not gone. We suppressed it last year with the covid mitigation measures. It has the potential to come back with a vengeance this year.
So very honored! Thank you! And may I say

Thanks to all our medical heroes-the doctors, nurses and scientists, too.
Because it drops risk of hospitalization and deaths to near zero in trial. The choice isn't between vaccines right now, it's between getting vaccines in arms or not.
If I had to chose getting the JNJ vaccine or nothing, I would choose getting that vaccine.
@BhadeliaMD
Not understanding why a patient would take a vaccine that is 72% effective which decreases to 65% under certain circumstances. How valid is claim that after 28 days you will have "complete" protection from hospitalization?
Wear a mask:
1) if you are around people not in your household
2) even if you are vaccinated
3) even if you have had prior infection.
It’s month 13 of the pandemic. Wear a mask.
This is for the 5 remaining undecided people in the country who have not voted yet.
After Woodward tapes, a ton of people said, “The President knew and lied to the American people.” That’s not the whole truth. Many people including government scientists knew how bad this was.

about not enjoying clash between Fauci & Rand Paul. I hate it because it’s painful to watch a public health leader who has dedicated his life to keeping us safe be badgered in this way to create political theater.
As more of us are vaccinated, it’s like firebreaks are being put down in our communities against the wildfire of virus. Vaccinated are incredibly less likely to be infected & transmit, or get severe disease.
Be the firebreak. Don’t be kindling.

After spending all day worrying about viruses, I see I can now leave work and stress out about the fact that we are full speed on our path to becoming Republic of Gilead.
How truly self-centered do you have to be to think an entire global catastrophe with over a million deaths is about your re-election?
What type of mind thinks an entire profession is committing fraud and risking jail time just to drive up death counts to harm you?
Utah gets ready to invoke crisis standard of care, triaging limited medical resources among growing number of patients.
As someone who has had to do this at patient bedsides in resource limited settings during an epidemic, it’s heartbreaking and horrendous.
“But one of the defining features of intensive care is access to doctors and nurses with specialty training — and opening new beds does not mean those health care workers can staff them.”
Thank you
@JoeBiden
@KamalaHarris
.
Thank you for allowing this moment for us to grieve, to recognize the loss, to let our eyes brim over with tears and for providing the space where we can share our sorrow before we wake up to take on the challenges ahead.
I want to stress this point. We often hear ">70% Americans vaccinated"... that's adult eligible Americans.
But only 56.5% of ALL Americans are fully vaccinated right now when we include children. And we have to include them because they can get infected, transmit & can get sick.
I know things seem scary right now. There is uncertainty & too much information. But tonight, unless you are sick, unless something needs to be done right now- turn off the TV & the web, have some dinner. Take a deep breath. Hang in there. 🤗

I think the scariest thing for those of us in public health right now is knowing that this is not the peak. This is the incline.
It will be a rough few months. Please do your part. We in healthcare are here for you but that may not be enough. Because there aren’t enough of us.
Our daily update is published. Our testing, case, and death statistics continue to be affected by the Thanksgiving holiday and weekend. Hospitalizations are less affected by the data slowdown and are at the record-high level of 96,039.
Mesa county, CO is seeing hospitalization increases due to delta variant. It has a population that’s 39% fully vaccinated . In the next phase of this pandemic, local realities are going to be even more disparate based on vaccination rates.
Dr. Fauci says the last time President Trump has attended a coronavirus task force meeting was “several months ago.”
“Direct involvement with the president in the discussions? I have not done that in a while.”
Don't give up. Don't give in. I know this is tough. We are all burnt out. Masks, hand hygiene, physical distancing. These are the things that keep hospitals from getting overwhelmed.
These are the things that keep lockdowns at bay.
Jake Tapper asks Dr. Anthony Fauci to react to the CPAC Texas crowd cheering that the government has been unable to reach its vaccine goals so far.

This is the reason we are leading a survivor cohort of COVID19 patients
@The_BMC
. It’s clear there are parts of recovery in this disease that do not follow what we would expect.
The symptoms that emerge post-hospitalization or among many younger people with initial light symptoms is a scary and not understood part of the disease.
I know we all want to “go back”.
There is no going back after major global crises & societal upheavals.
There is only moving towards “after” which will be different because we are all now different. But we can work to make the “after” a better place together.

Ok so it looks like there is a lot of confusion on this remdesivir news. Here is a lay person summary.
There are numerous on going trials on remdesivir. Gilead, the manufacturer has 2- one in severe patients getting either 5 or 10 days, one in moderate patients w control arm.

This is enough to step out of vacation to comment on. Anyway, there is no place to escape & no normalcy.
Because the President of United States downplayed a once in a century pandemic, leading to 190k American deaths & destruction of the economy, SO HE COULD GET RE-ELECTED.
This is a good move. It will save lives.
We need vaccine manufacturers to follow suit.
Prevention is always better than cure. And new infections can still lead to viral evolution. No infections cannot.
Merck has granted a royalty-free license for its Covid antiviral pill to a UN-backed nonprofit. The deal will allow the drug to be manufactured and sold cheaply in 105 developing nations.
This is probably the best way to show why testing alone doesn’t explain US case load & why we aren’t testing enough. Too many of us are infected. In US, we do 12 tests and find an infected person. In UK, they do 235 tests before finding a new case.
Moderna gets green light to pack 14 instead of 10 doses (capping & bottling part of the delays). It would increase supply by 20% as long as they can keep up with drug manufacturing itself.

Pandemics are not like wars. They don’t end overnight with a treaty. We keep moving ever forward in uncharted waters to return to normalcy.
We need to take stock of things that make us vulnerable so this doesn’t happen again.

The world owes a debt to the West African healthcare workers who changed the course of that epidemic.
And it owes a debt to the healthcare workers everywhere right now who haven’t even had a chance to reflect yet on how this pandemic has & will change them.

Just repeating this PSA: Dexamethasone is not a cure for
#COVID19
. It does not target the virus. It depresses immune system & likely helps ICU patients whose immune systems have gone haywire. It does not protect against COVID19. In fact, if taken early will lead to worse outcomes
Any strategy that says we should ONLY be testing the high risk and vulnerable
is basically saying…
We will wait until the high risk and vulnerable get sick to care about them rather than preventing the disease.
Hospitals are overwhelmed in some undervaccinated states due to covid-19 patients.
They are under siege outside due to protests against vaccine mandates.
And over the phone from people insisting on being given an unproven drug.
US is such a normal place right now.
So many issues with this new video from the President. I don't know where to start. Let me start by saying, I think monoclonal antibodies hold promise & I am waiting to see the clinical trial data to back that up.
Hang in there. It's been an awful year. Things are on upswing if we stick it out for a bit longer. Get vaccinated so:
-we can protect our loved ones & ourselves
-we can go back to doing what we love in not so distant future
-we can restart our economy
-we can hug each other soon.
