Hey
#chesspunks
! I had the honor of playing in a simul today with the legendary
@Kasparov63
. Obviously I lost, but I will remember this experience for life 😁
I just heard my daughter singing in the shower "look, I saw rook a4, I just didn't like it". She's 4 years old, doesn't know how to play chess, and doesn't speak English 😲🤯
#chesspunks
Just played round 1 of Tata Steel. A hard-fought draw where I was much better but failed to find the correct continuation, and then my opponent found a nice trick to force a draw.
I’ll show the game later. Now I have to sleep…
#chesspunks
Just played a game in our team league. Although my team lost 2.5-5.5, I had a nice (theoretical) win. My opponent played into a main line of the Botvinnik Semi-Slav (a super sharp opening), and I happened to know all the theory until he made a mistake.
#chesspunks
Just received wordt that I'm no longer on the waiting list - I'll be playing the Wijk aan Zee Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2023! Really looking forward to this one 😁😱
#chesspunks
The highlight for me was when after 20 moves the position was still roughly equal, and he looked at me and asked "I'm sorry, what's your rating?" It sounded like a compliment to me 😁
Obviously I blundered a piece a couple of moves later...
Yesterday my chess club organized a very special event: a simul against the current champion (that would be me 😅). 21 people turned out to do battle with me 😱 It was a great experience, but a bit tiring.

@ChrisBirdIA
I think this is one of those "hate the system, don't hate the player" moments. FIDE set this up so this kind of nonsense could happen. In a way, they encouraged it by going only off the Jan 1st rating list.
I don't like that it's happening, but it's not Firouzja's fault.
Sadly, I lost my final round game 😢 I made two mistakes after getting a very promising position, the second of which got me checkmated 😅
I’ll come back better next year 😄
#chesspunks
Yesterday we had the amazing Mr. X visit our chess club and play a simul against 29 people: 26 wins, 3 draws, and no losses (I lost my game too). Very impressive!
@schaakbond
#chesspunks
I came across this puzzle in Chessable’s recent course 50-day Tactics Challenge. An excellent exercise in short calculation. Black to play; single-move answers are wrong.
#chesspunks
From Karpov-Anand. Black to play (the board is set up from white’s perspective). How would you evaluate this position? What would you play?
#chesspunks
Nice way to end the year in style: won first place among first boards at my club's end of year team tournament. My team didn't finish very well, but I played some decent games and held a draw in a terrible endgame for 3W 2D 0L 😁
#chesspunks
Round 2 another draw. Just like yesterday it was a hard-fought game that lasted five hours, and just like yesterday it ended in knight plus rook versus rook 😅
#chesspunks
@ChessProblem
So refreshing to see a new name in the spotlight, after all the hype of the last couple of months that only focused on a small group of youngsters 😅
I don't do this often, but found this variation on a well-known theme. From the excellent 1001 Chess Exercises for Advanced Club Players. Black to play
#chesspunks
Some important games are coming up, so it’s time for some OTB study. White to move! (This one took me a while to solve)
#chesspunks
(Disclaimer: that mug holds my tea, not my opening)
When I played Wijk aan Zee early this year, I was planning to drive there every day (roughly 40 minutes from my house), but my wife suggested I book a hotel for a couple of days so the kids wouldn’t keep me from sleeping. I love her 😄
#chesspunks
So I memorized this position to solve blindfolded while taking a shower, but then the solution occurred to me as the water was heating up 😅

@ChessProblem
As a mathematician, I’m offended that someone would calls this mathematical analysis. He just computed average ELO of men/women in various age categories, and what % of the women are in the top of those categories 😭 🤯
@blackatlantic
Yes. I don't understand how so many people mistake one for the other. You can be both against cheating and in favor of a good process (i.e. against witch-hunting).
@NealBruceBC
I think I’ve seen something like this before. Nxd5 wins a pawn because cxd5 Bc7 traps the queen. After Nxg3 Nxe7+ Qxe7 hxg3 white is a clean pawn up.
Got to play on my club's new DGT e-board yesterday! An important game in our club's internal competition. A tough game that I managed to win eventually 😁
#chesspunks
I just failed to hold a 100% drawn endgame. I made two blunders in time trouble - one to make it more difficult but still objectively (and easily) drawn and the second to give my opponent the win. I'm furious at myself right now. The analysis will come tomorrow 🤬
#chesspunks
@ChessifyMe
I think this puzzle was posted on Twitter recently... But so many puzzles get posted every day it's difficult to keep track 😅 Anyway, I think the first move is Rb5.
Today is Rating Day! I gained 14 points through hard work over the last month and another 91 through the rating adjustment 😅 Now I am 1863-rated, whether that’s accurate or not.
#chesspunks
@ShohrehBayat
@FIDE_chess
@advorkovich
I already said this yesterday - there is nothing political about that t-shirt. I think you did nothing wrong and FIDE should apologize publicly.
@GMJacobAagaard
Yes. This accusing without evidence or even some theory has to stop. It’s even worse after a loss! And people should stop using accuracy as a meaningful statistic here. It just isn’t.
Yesterday I played another classical game at the chessclub. My final "training game" before I travel to Wijk aan Zee for Tata Steel Chess.
#chesspunks
Here my opponent just played the move Na2; what do we do?
Tata Steel Chess Round 3/3. This round determined the final standings - with a win or a draw I would win my group, and with a loss the group would go to my opponent. It ended up as a nice win, and finished "brilliantly" (at least according to
@chesscom
).
#chesspunks
People liked my previous puzzle, so now an even cooler, even more difficult one 😄 (no worries, I could solve this one so you can too!). White to play, is this a win, draw, or loss?
#chesspunks
@DerekCAtHome
I agree. When he went after Hikaru it was funny because he was so obviously wrong abd Hikaru is good enough and big enough to be beyond suspicion, but many talented youngsters don’t have that power and it can have real negative effects for them.
Today I played in the
#chesspunks
qualifier. I achieved 6th in my section (U1700) with 7/9. I was happy with the final score because I started 1/3. Congrats to those who qualified for the main event!
I'll post back later with some analysis of interesting positions.
Another game at the club yesterday; this time I faced the Jobava London again. Some positions from the game below:
#chesspunks
Here my opponent played Bd3-b5+, a move that doesn't appear in my repertoire. How do we block the check?
@GmAvetik
1.Qxe5 dxe5 2.Bf6 Kg8 3.Rh3 and mate seems unstoppable... except in desperate situations we can use desperate measures: 3...Qe1 4.Kg2 Qxf2! 5.Kxf2 Ne4 and black takes the bishop next, stopping mate. In the endgame black is up a pawn.
I played another classical game this week; a very painful loss. I feel that I had a very decent position for most of the game and then suddenly blundered it all away in the end. Nevertheless, here are some positions to think about.
#chesspunks
First: what do we play here?
@Shivamnimzo
I think that’s unfair. This explanation sounds reasonable. If another player complained about the sound Alireza was making, what should the arbiter have done?
@JenShahade
This is terrible. Also quite arrogant of US Chess to claim that they speak on behalf of their scholastic/teen members, especially the ones who willingly reached out to you! I have no idea how that even works legally.
@Lona_Chess
In many situations, once you make a decision, you cannot go back, so you have to live with the consequences. As a result, for important decisions, it makes sense to put some thought into them.
