I hate Trump, but I don't hate you. I am just trying to understand what makes you - an intelligent and apparently decent human being - defend him.

Hat Sahra Wagenknecht sich eigentlich schon darüber empört, dass die NATO demnächst Finnland und Schweden annektiert und damit ihrem imperialistischen Drang weiter ungehemmt nachgibt?

It's a general calendar that contains many articles and little bits of chess information. For example, it tells you that a certain Brazilian GM will have his birthday soon!
A moment of madness just as Sam Shankland was about to make a draw and give the USA a crucial match win! After 90...Qg2 (Sam expected 90...Qh1+) he played the impossible 91.Kc2... and there were no king moves that didn't lose!

puzzle, though not too difficult, I found quite wicked. Sometimes chess is just not fair. I mean, what has White done to deserve winning here?
After some humilliating failures I have now managed to correctly solve two puzzles in a row from this fabulous book and feel ready to enter a category xvi round robin.

Merkel's behaviour is entirely consistent with what she said and did all along with regard to Brexit. Same goes for EU in general. So no need for faux outrage.

documentary on Netflix. If he had played in the era of colour tv, internet and social media, few would question that he was the GOAT. Everything Maradona, Messi and Ronaldo did, Pelé had already done before.
From a blitz game I just played: White's last move was c3-c4, and I couldn't believe I had blundered so stupidly. Did I despair too soon?
Merry Christmas everyone!🎄
Carlsen's score on the black side of the Rossolimo is so ridiculous that you really wonder why people keep playing at against him (note that this list doesn't even include his brilliant wins against Caruana in Wijk and now Duda).
Year after year I am enjoying the superbly presented

In this position, Black made a draw by giving check on the light squares. White can't take on f2 because of Qxf5+. Was there something better for Black?

Great! So next time someone points out that my sentence doesn't make sense, I can reply: "Of course, it's an Escher sentence, you noob!"
On a more serious note, academic papers are full of (unintended) Escher sentences.
It's hard to describe just how epic Game 6 was in the World Championship match between Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi! Not only did we finally get our first victory in the match, but a world record was also broken in the process!

I can totally understand why he thought he had ample compensation. We have seen other top players who greatly overestimated their positions in the post-mortems (eg Kramnik).

Not sure it was my biggest "Aha moment", but one very important insight was: "When you have a good position, don't worry if you don't see a direct way to win. Enjoy your position, it's your opponent who is suffering."

Agree with you in general, but in the immediate aftermath of France's surrender there were actually calls in Britain to make peace. Churchill took a huge gamble that could have backfired badly (luckily it didn't).
Another great episode! The mentioning of Valentin Arbakov brought back one of my most embarrassing chess-memories: In the mid-90s, I played him in round 2 of a rapid tournament. Although it was around 11AM, Arbakov seemed quite drunk. Presumably from the night before (1/8).

Asa knew Bobby Fischer well, and also met basically every chess player who has passed through NYC.

Finish a mediocre tournament with one decent win and you go home in good spirits. Finish a fantastic tournament with an unlucky defeat and you want to quit chess.

Was behaupten Sie denn nun?
It's probably due to my age, but I find the Armenian result even more impressive than that of Uzbekistan and India 2. Whereas the young super-talents are obviously underrated, the Armenian players peaked some time ago and thus had to punch above their weight in most matches.

Sometimes doing crazy things before a game (like drinking and partying all night) actually works. But when it doesn't, as is likely, you look like an idiot.
No matter how this game ends, I hope that after the tournament Keymer will study rook endgames for three months non-stop in order to become the ultimate BEAST in these positions.

Karpov has always shown great talent in coming up with any bullshit argument to support his position. Just look at his interviews on the 1997 knockout WC ("though I was seeded into the finals, I was actually disadvantaged"). He could easily replace Lavrov.

. I presume he is talking about Andrei Sokolov who got crushed by Karpov. Personally, I remember many a player from junior tournaments who greatly overperformed thanks to their confidence.
The theme of avoiding an "automatic capture" reminded me of a fascinating pawn endgame that recently occurred in a junior competition. Black to play, can he save the draw?

From the game Wojtaszek-Schitco at the World Cup. Radek played here 62.Kxf7 and resigned shortly after.
He could have saved a draw with accurate play, though. What was White’s best move here?
Me, going into the last game of the season, after having failed to convert a number of great positions: "Chess sucks, why do I even play?"
Also me, after having won a dodgy game due to a horrible blunder by my opponent: "Chess is great, maybe I should sign up for tournament!"

Amazing how they immediately go to the analysis. Karpov must have been devastated losing that game. Yet his passion for chess gets the upper hand.

Great read! I would just add one more myth: chess is all about stone-cold calculation and scheming. Reality: to play a game of chess is a highly emotional affair. To my mind, this emotional aspect of chess is even the primary reason for people to stick with the game.
