Hence the need for more protection. At sea the saluting gun crews wear overalls as well.

My prime alma mater: HMS VERNON - as a Ship's Diver 'Ad Qual' in 1980, becoming a mixed-gas professional Clearance Diver and Naval Mine Warfare specialist throughout 1982. It's now Gunwharf Quays shopping complex, and is the home of our @VernonMonument, which is magnificent!.
#OnThisDay 100 years ago in 1923 the Captain of HMS VERNON, a training hulk in Portsmouth, transferred ashore to be hoisted in the new shore establishment of the same name on the Gunwharf site. Over the years it served as a Diving, Mine Counter-measures and SONAR base until 1986

My old steamer (Ops Officer '93-'95). She had a second life as Brazilian Naval Ship DODSWORTH, afore her inevitable demise. Those Batch 1 Type 22 frigates (along with BROADSWORD, BRAZEN, and BATTLEAXE - I sailed in all four) were superb warships 🇬🇧⚓️.
Ex HMS Brilliant . She saw service in the Falklands where her helo disabled ARA Santa Fe . She was the first to fire seawolf taking down 3 A4 aircraft she also chased an argentine ship and forced it aground she also rescued 24 from Atlantic conveyor . #History

The 'Tupperware Navy' we called them when these superb GRP constructed Hunt class ships were delivered. I remember BROCK's first arrival in HMNB Rosyth, and her subsequent crunch with NURTON in dense fog off Portland - you can still see where the bow was repaired ⚓.
