In 2022, I finished the last tome of my
#WW2
trilogy. 1. Sand & Steel (D-Day)
2. Snow & Steel (Ardennes)
3. Fire & Steel/Victory in the West (1945)
In 2024, new book on Winston Churchill appears, 4 July
Now writing (with Mr Bor): 1918: Triumph in the West, + History of the QDG
Ukraine thoughts: If NATO membership was assessed in terms of willingness and ability to fight, Ukraine would be a member and Germany would be required to leave.
"I need ammunition, not a ride". What a phrase. President Zelensky of Ukraine has already carved in his in history and reserved a place in Valhalla, with those six words. Bravo! 🇺🇦
Very, very sad to read of scores of dogs tied up by their leads with notes attached, at train and bus stations throughout Ukraine, as their owners have had to leave without their treasured pets. Eg, "This is Ihor, very gentle, please look after him". Heartbreaking.
⚡️Ukrainian Spetsnaz forces rescue Ivan Fedorov - the mayor of Melitopol who was kidnapped by Russian occupation troops. He was freed in a 'special military operation' (the true meaning of the phrase!)
#Russia
: Reports from St Petersburg of long queues for food. Residents have been told only 7 days of basic supplies left, ATMs emptying, interest rates now 20%, prices fluctuating upwards every day. Riot police arresting dissenters, including aged survivors of WWII siege
Ukraine: it is assessed by Western intel that Ukrainian forces have performed very well against Russian troops. Caused heavy casualties & have captured Russian soldiers, destroyed Russian armour & aircraft along the Dnieper River, S at Mariupol & in the N, opposite Belarus.
Paris, Charles de Gaulle Airport. The last 2 months have taught me that life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain. The cravat is back in business.
Thank you all so much for you kind words as I battle through this quadruple bypass. Small steps. Good days & less good days. Humbled by your support. Today is challenging. Thank you all.
Sorry to report that a good old Italian friend of mine, with whom I used to sample the odd bottle (sometimes very odd) of vino in Florence & Warsaw, was killed yesterday in Ukraine. Alexander was a 55 year-old medical volunteer on his 4th tour there. Hits you like a sledgehammer.
I am so sorry I've had to cancel my book launch. However, there are worse places to be confined in the world after a sudden heart attack. I will count my blessings I can still invade your Twitter feeds & send you positive vibes of Paris past. I'm told I may be here for some time.
My 47-year old chum in Lviv has been mobilised into the citizen's militia, given an AK, just parked his lovely spaniel, Alyssa, with a neighbour, & been put on a bus for the ten hour (minimum) drive to Kyiv. Sadly neither of us rate his chances of seeing me or Alyssa again.
Today has been a challenge, until I logged to Twitter and was literally overwhelmed by your support. Please know that every time you send someone a supportive message, it makes a huge difference. Most moved.
Poland: border thrown open to Ukrainian refugees. NO ID needed, no vaccinations, no documents, pets welcomed. Over one million anticipated in rest centres. Shaming other countries! Bravo Poland! 🇵🇱 Adversity brings out the best!
Let me introduce you to Paris's premier cardio surgical team, lead by Prof Dr Patrick Nataf (on my left), who kept
@militaryhistori
alive and then re-plumbed him. I am beyond grateful to you and your colleagues.
Impossible to concentrate on anything, with the health of HM The Queen in the balance. Our monarch for longer than I have been alive. The one constant of my life, & focus of every institution I have belonged to, from School to the Army to the UK Defence Academy
Ahghhhhh....Reports of "Truckloads of Ukrainian Aid stuck in UK due to post-Brexit paperwork: charity workers who are trying to send aid to people in war-torn Ukraine say their donations are spending days stuck at Dover due to complex post-Brexit checks." (PoliticsHome)
I seem to be under siege from Putin's twitter trolls. Be on your guard, a massive Russian social media campaign under way. Don't argue, just block them & move on... A reminder
Maj Bala Bredin leaving Dunkirk “I beckoned a steward. Can you produce a glass of beer for me?"
"Oh yes sir, by all means, but the rules mean I can’t supply you with any alcohol until we’re 3 miles out."
I thought to myself: "We can’t lose a war with people like this around"
We owe

It's a relief and a privilege to be back behind my desk, when as little as 2 months ago it seemed I was destined for somwhere altogether warmer. Thank you ALL for your messages and moral support on SM, which more than anything, pulled me through the rockiest of coronary patches.
Colonel Oleksandr “Grey Wolf” Oksanchenko came out of retirement to defend Ukraine when Russia commenced its invasion. On 25 February he was KIA after being shot down by a Russian S-400 air defence system.
Loved watching the

coverage. This was a nice touch, in a procession of world leaders and high ranking Officers from the Commonwealth, this Lt Col paid compliment to one and only one very special individual...

Conscription tales from my Russian contacts: call-up rumoured to far exceed 300k. Buy your own sleeping bags, first aid kits, tourniquet, none issued. No beds in barracks, sleeping on bubble wrap on concrete floors. Rumours of less than 2 weeks training, then Ukraine.
Good morning! Apologies for my enforced absence since 17 March, when I was attacked in a dark Croatian alley by those 2 salty ruffians, Blind Pulmonory Embolism & Long John Pneumonia. Matron & her cardiac team in Pula have been wonderful in vanquishing them. Home now, Bor crazy
A part of me reticent to live my life online, but as 3,000+ of you sent me good wishes, feel duty bound to respond. A huge morale boost, humbled & astonished. Stable in my Parisian hospital, visited by Le Grand Fromage (chief surgeon) to discuss my impending bypass op, all is wel
Today also very challenging. Mind over matter. 20 metres to end of corridor to view northern Paris. Then back. Then sleep. Thank you all for support. No idea how difficult this was going to be. Your kind words & soothing images really helping.
Apparently, after 12 days, I've been monopolising too much of our wonderful
@NHS
& and I am being discharged into the Friday sunshine. Thank you so much to Queen Alexandra's hospital, Portsmouth, for all your care and attention.

: a reason emerges why Russian tank columns have kept to main roads. They weren't supplied with maps or GPS and were following roadsigns. Hence when diverted to other routes by combat, they had to stop locals and ask for directions. Assessment: evidence of poor logistics
In the midst of observances of Dunkirk, OTD in 1940, my mind turns to Charles Lightoller (1874-1952), senior surviving officer of the Titanic. Not content with an active

(DSC & bar), aged 66 he took his motor yacht, Sundowner, to Dunkirk, rescuing 130 troops in a single trip
Hugely grateful to you all for your best wishes for my recovery. It will take months and there are both psychological and physical dimensions to this. Thus, every single word of encouragement helps. Been humbled & moved by your support. Thank you!
"I consider it to be the duty of anyone who sees a flaw in the plan not to hesitate to say so. I have no sympathy with anyone who will not brook criticism. We are here to get the best possible results & you must make a really cooperative effort."
Eisenhower before D-Day.
Every Christmas Eve, local school Dutch children come to Holten & Groesbeek Canadian Military Cemeteries in the Netherlands to light a candle in the honour of every Canadian soldier laid to rest.
Dear all. I seems I have just had some sort of overnight cyber attack, which has removed everyone I was following, tens of thousands of you. I still retain all 32,000 of you who are following me and I will try and retrieve the situation
Assessment: Putin's heightened alert status for his strategic nuclear missile force is evidence of weakness. This force had already deployed for the Belarus "exercises", thus already on heightened alert. Desperate rhetoric. Western nuclear forces always on high alert.
Quieter than usual for the next few days as preparing for an important interview on Monday 18th for a job I'd really like to get. I'd appreciate your positive vibes, please!
Born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada in 1935, this former US Army prisoner, tank commander and later MASH surgeon turned 87 on 17 July, but will be forever 35, filching Nazi gold.
Behold the USS Winston S. Churchill arriving at

Currently the only U.S. Naval vessel to fly a foreign ensign. Being named after a Briton, the Royal Navy's White Ensign is honorarily flown on special occasions👇
Ukraine: Citizens have been instructed to remove roadsigns to confuse the enemy. They've gone one better than that. The roadsigns have been replaced with obscene directions, which translate as "Go f*** yourself", "Go f*** yourself again" and "Go f*** yourself back in Russia".
Buckingham Palace has officially announced that our monarch, Queen Elizabeth departed earlier today to join her much-loved husband, the Duke of Edinburgh. We can only be thankful for her service to us, our nation & the Commonwealth.
Breaking: Moscow Press Conference: extraordinary that Russian Foreign Minister's spokeswoman threatened Finland & Sweden with "serious detrimental consequences of a diplomatic & military kind" should they consider applying to join NATO.
Thank you ever so much to my fantastic Twitter community, for yr best wishes, DMs & support. Life as an ex-pat is fun until a medical emergency. Then Blighty seems an awfully long way away on a piece of slender elastic. Humbled by yr 1000s of msgs & pictures, a great life support
I'm being trolled by the anti-BBC crowd. Please, now isn't the time. Besides, no one else out there is providing balanced and objective local language reporting, like
@bbcrussian
and
@bbcukrainian
news services. We're in a war of information, in which the bbc is unsurpassed
Just ponder. If John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, had devised a buttoned woollen coat, and James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, has put his lunch between two slices of bread - we'd be wearing Sandwiches and eating Cardigans.
Nothing more dangerous than a junior officer with a map? I was than man once. My chaps used to say they only followed me - out of curiosity to see where we'd end up...
On her way to Balmoral Castle in Scotland, the Queen once spotted a small shop by the side of the road and curiously entered. The saleswoman looked at her in disbelief: "You look extremely like the Queen." Elizabeth II replied, "Oh, how reassuring!"

Hi all, just returned. Hopefully Twitter issues in the past. These two kind gentlemen who I have just found mending my telephone line, have even offered to fix the problem for me. They phoned their boss, who told them to sort me out, so that is kind.

: the most astounding news of the day: At 1500, Central European Time, Switzerland abandoned decades of strict non intervention, when the president announced his country will join EU sanctions, including asset freezes, targeting Russia.
Ahhhh, doctor's rounds in my Parisian hopital. I am reminded of PG Wodehouse: "Into the face of the young man there crept a look of furtive shame, that shifty hanging look, which announces an Englishman is about to speak French"
Ding Dong. I am so sad to learn that one of my childhood heroes, the actor Leslie Phillips CBE, he of Carry on Nurse & Carrry on Constable and Harry Potter, has died. An officer in the DLI during the war, he was a scarcely credible 98.
Ukraine: reports trickling in of Russian logistics failures, running out of food, fuel, & I have seen footage of Russian tracked vehicles towing one another along highways. Assessment, despite extensive rehearsals, an overconfident attack, expecting victory within hours.
I'm in a state of shock. I woke up this morning in Croatia on Thursday 8 September 2022. It was like any other day, until the news at 1230 of HM's illness, and just now of Our Sovereign Lady's death. An era that was slowly changing has just ended. Long Live the King, as they say
A sure indication that I'm to have the bypass next week. Probably Tuesday. Loads of paperwork in French on the risks, benefits and what can go wrong. I've opted to leave my body to medical science fiction.
Listening to Boris Johnson, PM. In a stirring address to the nation, he has found his feet. Lets see if the words match the actions., but Bravo! An uncompromising speech. Excellent
@BorisJohnson
Another long day for Ukraine. Going to turn in. Thank you all very much indeed for reading my posts and following me. I'll leave you with this tribute & my admiration for the brave people of Ukraine, preparing to resist to the end. 🇺🇦 See you tomorrow, I hope
Time now: Here I am in Chichester hospital. Ward TV tuned to Yesterday channel, World War 2 From Above with Tony Robinson. Suddenly, a surreal movement occurs when a patient appears onscreen. Consternation. An autograph signed. Huge street cred. Great help to recovery!
