@whoisclydekelly
Big part was the outside funding. They were at $5 million a year in sales before taking outside capital.
Then grew to $100 million in 18 months.
I did a quick piece on it a while back.
@SeanEcom
Great point that attention/distribution is key.
May find this interesting.
Andrew Wilkinson on his most recent my first million pod appearance said ecom was hard mode for biz.
He mentioned his niche job board (we work remotely) as an easier biz. Said if they went pens down…
@girdley
Scott Galloway was on the MFM pod yesterday and said something similar.
If you have the education, go work for a big company and get rich slowly.
It surprised me, but I agree, that’s how most people get there.
@CoFoundersNik
Start a filtered shower head brand. Logistics is key.
Jolie did this. $4 million first year, 85% margins, 80% subscribe with 97% retention.
In an interview founder mentioned there was demand for a rain shower head version, but they weren’t doing it.
@jcolesimpson
Point him in Scott Galloways direction. He’s worth $100 million+ and thinks people should work for big companies as you’re more likely to get rich.
And he can invest in startups if he wants to be involved.
@oliver__b1
Moonpig founder said it best.
I just hired someone to do the job better than me.
And if they’re doing it better then why would I do it.
Reached 11 million GBP per year in profit. Sold for 120 million GBP!
@mbertulli
I always think it’s useful to think of money as something else.
Like if someone had more black t shirts than they could ever wear and spent more time accumulating more black t shirts we would think they’re crazy.
We just over value money as a status signal.
@businessbarista
Someone could take this list, find top tech founders opinions, list them out and have two years worth of newsletter material.
Thanks for sharing!
@jbryanporter
@heyalexfriedman
@AcquiredFM
did an amazing pod on Costco.
Fascinating part is what fewer skus does:
•allows product to move on pallets
•pallets can move directly to stores allowing them to turn inventory once a month
•allows buyers to know input cost into products
China’s richest person is Zhong Shanshan.
Worth $63 billion and sells bottled water.
Key move was two decades ago he decided to only sell water that comes straight from the source.
They claimed in an ad campaign it was healthier than factory purified.

Answer: No. Human interaction is key and we've learned that with the smart phone. However, more immersive experiences for entertainment have always been adopted. Color screens. Bigger tv's. Imax. Human's will choose the most immersive when they're solo.
And John if I don't win…
@nickrgrs
Completely agree. I heard for every 7 people leaving trades in US only 1 entering.
Trade with a tech front is going to be a solid win over the next 30 years.
@RyanReeves_
And everyone is still asking what problem are you solving?
It needs to be a pain killer, not a vitamin!
Some times people just want unique. Or comfortable. Or both.
@searchbound
That’s amazing, congrats!
I was surprised onlinejobs ph is up to $10 million in revenue a year.
These niche job boards are so interesting.
@mhp_guy
Very good point. Have to go where there’s no attention.
I think mulch delivery/application and irrigation install would work well.
Irrigation install is the perfect mix of hard enough that people don’t want to do it, but your kids could learn it by doing your own lawn.
@mbertulli
MFM!
@thesamparr
@ShaanVP
You guys should have Matt on in 2024. CEO and co-founder of Lomi and Pela Case.
Also on the operators podcast (where all hosts have biz doing $100 million+ per year).
@mikebeckhamsm
I found this super surprising in the Jensen interview. I thought anyone who built a trillion dollar company would think it was worth it in hindsight.
Also loved his framework of "zero billion dollar businesses" which have no market now, but will grow to billion dollar markets.
Marketing stunt:
Founder of BrewDog made a beer called Elvis Juice.
Was sued by the Elvis estate for a royalty.
So him and his partner legally changed their names to Elvis and sued the Elvis estate for royalties on the music.
Turn lemons into media.
@thesamparr
@RyanHoliday
@profgalloway
Oh man the Galloway episode where he talks about money and how he spends $200-400k a month.
Amazing. Most honest interview about how wealth makes someone feel.
@girdley
Filtered Shower Head, but with a rainfall version!
Jolie did it with a normal shower head.
Marketed as a beauty product.
$4 million in first year sales.
80% of customers pick a subscription. 97% retention.
Newsletter is about to go out!
$70k in a year making restaurant reservations.
$3.8 million in 2 years selling hats.
A nine figure business slapping Supreme and Jack Nicklaus together...
@girdley
This is a fantastic list! Bookmarked a few to look into!
Another interesting one is:
“Niche Marketplaces”
Love this job board that’s doing $10 million a year.
Founder works 17 hours a week.
@FoundersPodcast
Second good post today I've seen that really points out that competitors mean there's customers.
Don't fear them. Just be different. And better.
@SievaKozinsky
I remember this great talk he gave to a class.
He said they all wanted to start tech companies but the hot dog vendor on their campus had a giant line and made a ton of money (he often mentions lines).
Fantastic entrepreneur!
We made $13,998.22 in 35.6 hours on one project.

@NeckarValue
Yeah money is just flying everywhere it seems.
Super interesting pod out this week on Scott Galloway talking about how he spends his $100 million+ net worth.
Spends $200-400k per month!
First bullet has a link to it.

Just finished, love a biz idea pod!
Also really liked the FUN framework that was mentioned for new social products.

Biz update:
Carte Blanche (hat and shirt brand that does drops every 6 weeks) was on the Ecom Gold pod.
Latest drop sold 1,000 orders and AOV was over $100.
$100k per drop and growing!
Biz idea: Flying Dentist
Niche site that's dedicated to medical (dental) tourism. Focus on reviews like trip advisor. Could also be a site to see what's available close to your next trip.
dot com is also for sale for $6,600.
My daughter (20 years old) is in Thailand getting dental work done and saving us truckload of money.
She had a bunch of cavities that needed filling and 4 molars removed which are $1000-$3000 each. On the low end her work was going to be about $7000 at a local dentist in…
Our Future Pod Ep. 9 dropped (2nd story):
At 14 Ritwik Pavan
@ritwikpavan
taught himself how to code.
Built an agency to build apps.
Hosts - have a core competency, leverage that into a service biz.
Scaled it for 6-7 years, had around 40 people on the team.
Started Krava (cont.)
@gregisenberg
That’s amazing. Love that they include stories, that makes so much sense.
Biz idea!
Agency that creates these amazing handbooks for the Fortune 100.
@pmktg00
Completely agree that lone wolf 8 fig biz are rare.
I do see a trend though where businesses use agencies/consultants in the early days.
Like Jolie (filter shower heads), 3 full time, but reached $4 million first year, $25-30 million in year two.
"To become rich you must be an owner. And you must try to own it all... That is the dirty, rotten little secret of it all, my friend.”
Felix Dennis, amazing entreprenuer and writer of one of my favorite books of all time.
@SeanEcom
Jolie Skin Co. Filtered Shower Heads hitting $25-30 million in sales in its second year.
Predict it sells in 2025 for $150 million+.
80% subscription with 97% retention.
This is Emily Pelllegrini. She’s a social media model. And she’s not real.
If your main thing is just being hot… lookout.
You might need an actual personality 😲
I agree with
@Codie_Sanchez
on all of this except actors. I think the best actors will still have roles.
@mhp_guy
Door to door staining fences. You know who needs it and if one neighbor does it you can color match the next one.
Dorsal bracelets is a super cool one too. I wrote about it a few weeks back.
@gregisenberg
Other key is that it was a deal with Tiny.
@awilkinson
and
@JamesClear
did the deal over text.
James owns 60% and Tiny 40%.
James brought the habit expertise. Tiny brought the design/development expertise.
Biz idea!
Productized service of creating ads that look like outdoor painted ads for brands to use in their display ads.
Whenever I see outdoor ads I just think they’re bigger and authentic.
Impressive out of home advertising campaign by Olipop.
