For no particular reason, I thought I might draw people's attention to Part VI of the National Defence Act, which covers the ability of the Canadian Armed Forces to act in the aid of the civil power.

One of the misconceptions going around the Internet is that international law guarantees that Alberta, were it to separate and form its own country, would have access to tidewater to ship its oil.
Few should be surprised that this is not true. Here is a brief explainer why:

This dad and his family will shortly learn that, under trespass laws, the security guards have the authority to arrest him. His resistance to that, for which there is ample evidence, will not make his legal issues easier.

CRA does not charge Alberta for collecting provincial income taxes. So, this would be a new, annual expense Alberta taxpayers would bear. Along with the hassle of filing two separate tax returns and dealing with two separate revenue agencies.
#ableg
When I asked the Finance Minister the cost of AB tax collection agency, he said minimum $500 million a year.
I almost fell off my chair - I was surprised then-Minister Toews was so forthcoming with the massive cost (there’s a video!)
Imagine $500m for housing instead.

Levant and co. were ordered to pay costs of a little over $250,000, inclusive of the costs at the Ontario Court of Appeal. This will be increased somewhat because of the seeking leave to appeal at the SCC.

I am inclined to think that the standards to which police are held (this not being an active shooter situation) are too low, especially when dealing with visible minorities.
Note that this must be initiated by the provincial minister; there is no ability for the federal government to invoke this power directly. Moreover, this is initiated at the ministerial level; it cannot be delegated to an official.
4/
The initial step is that the provincial attorney general must come to the view that a riot or disturbance of the peace beyond the powers of the civil authorities to suppress is occuring or is considered likely to occur.

Perhaps it is just me, but I would have thought that a multi-year pandemic which has killed millions and which is spread by aerosol transmission would have highlighted this need.
All NYC classrooms to have 2 HEPA filters, all custodians will have CO2 monitors, HVAC systems will be upgraded including installing MERV 13 filters. Wow.
Unlike other requests for help from the Canadian Forces (to help in disasters or during the pandemic), the provincial attorney general requests aid directly to the Chief of the Defence Staff and not to the federal Public Safety Minister.

General reminder: federal firearms legislation has already been confirmed as a valid exercise of federal jurisdiction. It is well within Parliament’s ability to expand the list of prohibited firearms. Property “rights” have no constitutional protection in Canada.
Albertans can now speak up about provincial firearms policy and the federal government’s “gun grab.” Share your thoughts and opinions on the Alberta Firearms Advisory Committee website here:

All regular Canadian Forces members are liable to be called out. If the phone rings, you go, or you could instead be sent to a less than pleasant part of CFB Edmonton.
9/
The CDS cannot turn down a request. A response must be sent out. The Minister of National Defence can give directions that the Minister considers appropriate in the circumstances regarding the response, but this only affects how the CDS responds to the request.
6/
Despite the Minister’s attempt at rationalizing this, this is bonkers policy. In particular, because accreditation is voluntary, eliminating it does not reduce red tape. Rather, it lowers standards and makes it harder for parents to ensure quality care is being provided.
1/
Eliminating accreditation lets child care providers spend more time with kids and families and less time on paperwork. We'll continue to ensure safety through licensing and high standards through the good work already done and a legislation review later this year.
#ableg
All Canadian Forces members called out for service automatically have, in addition to their normal powers and duties, all of the powers and duties of constables. So, without being sworn as peace officers, they can make arrests, etc., just like the police.

Let’s not get too hung up on whether someone is a progressive, a centrist or a conservative. Let’s instead accept that most people will agree with you on some issues, but that almost no one will agree with you on every issue. And that’s okay.

For instance, I still get calls from the legal department of Service Canada, saying a warrant is out for my arrest due to fraudulent activity on my SIN.
The CDS must also consult with the provincial attorney general that made the request, and any other attorney general of a province that may be affected, on the response.

So, the reason why insurers don’t charge higher premiums for firearms owners is because they don’t insure the risks arising from firearm ownership?
If the firearm owner bears all financial risks that may arise from someone being shot, there’s a big gap in insurance coverage.
A check on provincial power: the provincial attorney general must, within one week of requesting aid, "cause an inquiry to be made into the circumstances that occasioned the calling out of the Canadian Forces". The inquiry report must be sent to the federal government.

Section 5 of the Emergency Measures Regulation provides that a person must not, directly or indirectly, provide property to facilitate or participate in a prohibited assembly or for the benefit of a person who is facilitating or participating in such an assembly.
I would never belittle the challenges Alberta is facing. However, it ended 2019 still way ahead of any other province in terms of GDP per capita and fiscal capacity. Its *ability* to pay thus remains near the best, if not the best, in Canada. Alberta just chooses to not do so.
Kenney: our ability at the prov level to pay for the quality of healthcare is increasingly limited. This is more desperate in Alberta than maybe anywhere else given the decline in the economy.
For clarification, "provincial attorney general" includes the acting attorney general or any minister who performs the duties of a provincial attorney general.

@DrJaredWesley
Ms Smith may find that political support for such a policy falls when people realize it jeopardizes the $5.25 billion Canada Health Transfer that goes to Alberta each year. There is no way her policy complied with the Canada Health Act.
This directive power means that the Alberta government can, at any time, interfere with the management of pension or other funds under AIMCo’s management to further some political purpose.
