"Grieve not nor speak of me with tears
But laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you there
Please do not let the thought of me be sad
For I am loving you just as I always have."
"Dearest Martha,
We lost the bouncy castles and hot tub yesterday to enemy forces. We used our shovels to build a mighty snow wall to hold back the intruders, but I fear they have a snow blower. Pray for us."
Dear 2022,
Thank you for submitting your manuscript. I regret to advise that I did not feel as enthusiastic about it as I wanted to.
First of all, there are simply too many plot lines for the average reader to follow.
My retired RCMP friend (he used to train police in riot control) and I took the pups for a walk this morning. He said if these protesters had been black or Indigenous, they would have been removed within 48 hours. And we all know that is sadly true.
Freedom Convoy statement disavows any connection between it and Pat King. I'm watching the news and Tamara Lich, one of the organizers, just left the tent with him.
Very good point made by someone in my Twitter feed. On Wednesday, Chief Sloly referred to tagging and towing as not being an "elegant solution." I heard it and made a mental note of it but didn't think about it. 1/
There is a 17-year-old on a flight from Ukraine to Ottawa right now. After he arrives, I have one more and then my work is done! At the end of all of this, I placed 50+ families -- several hundred people-- in Canada.
Just remember, he's the guy who let the truckers enter the core, who accepted their word that they would leave after the weekend, who allowed his police liaison to negotiate staging areas and who refused to ticket and tow early on when this whole thing could have been defused.
Just remember that Zelensky asked Trump to send military aid so Ukraine could defend itself against Russia, and Trump refused unless Zelensky would dig up dirt on Hunter Biden. That was what the first impeachment proceedings were all about.
He's just converted an illegal occupation of the city into a "legal" one by giving them permission to occupy the area set out in the letter, including the Hill. I really don't see how the police can get them out of there after this. I'm still gobsmacked.
Personally, I'm pissed off at Andrea Horwath and Steven Del Duca for attacking each other throughout the campaign instead of collaborating. Vote splits everywhere. A pox on both of them.
When I studied negotiations at Harvard, I learned that if you make concessions in the hope of building a relationship, all you get are demands for more concessions.
All week long, Sloly suggested that if the police took action, there could be serious risks of violence. Other cities managed to shut these protests down yesterday, without any incidents at all.
"Dearest Martha,
We are holding the line, but morale is low. There are eighteen mounted police at the back of the enemy forces. Some of the patriots fear these are Trojan horses, harbouring naked cowboys. God bless our souls."
In all honesty, I live in a Conservative riding and I wasn't even sure if I was going to bother voting this year. And then I saw the clip of Trudeau calling out Rebel Media after the French debate, and I thought, yes, that gets my vote.
If CBC wants to bring back some viewers and live up to its mandate of promoting Canadian content, they should quickly create a version of W5 and hire everyone that was working at CTV on it.
But it is enforcing the law. So the use of that phrase, which slid by me the first time, indicates that Sloly sees his rule as not one of enforcement, but of finding a solution that meets the protesters' interests. 5/
Let me get this straight. The same people who met with convoy leaders who wanted to create a coalition with the Governor General and the opposition parties are now upset that the NDP and Liberals are collaborating?
Is mainstream media going to even mention the fact that Danielle Smith sat on a stage last night and laughed when her invited guest,Tucker Carlson, made a homophobic joke about the PM? That used to be the kind of thing that people resigned over.
Question for
@tim4hire
: Rebel Media had told the truckers that it would pay for their fines. Is that action caught under the Emergencies Act financing provisions?
Two court injunctions in place along with a state of emergency and truck horns are still blaring on Wellington without any enforcement from the police or their OPP and RCMP reinforcements.
His job is supposed to be first and foremost to protect the citizens of Ottawa. From his perspective, this should not be seen as a national issue. It is a local enforcement issue for which he has a number of tools. 11/
One of the first things he announced early on in the protest was that he could not block off roads because of the Charter. This was either an ignorant or deliberate misstatement. We block off roads all the time on Canada day as one example.13/
And as another addendum, making unilateral concessions in the hope of building a relationship with the other party only leads to demands for more concessions. That is part of interest-based negotiation training as well. ///
It's time to tell some hard truths about what is happening to our country and to our democracy. We can't afford to be complacent any longer.
My speech from this morning's debate on the Emergencies Act.

I have spent every day for the last month or so placing traumatized people from an actual war zone into host families. Their friends & neighbours have been murdered, raped & tortured by Russian forces. So the people claiming that "Trudeau is a tyrant" can just fuck right off.
It's been a long time since we've seen a general strike in a province, but if I had to guess, I think we're heading for one in Ontario. It's just wrong to be invoking the notwithstanding clause to do away with collective bargaining as we head into a recession.
All of which tells me that the police chief has failed to use any of the tools at his disposal that help in negotiating an exit by the protesters, and instead has taken steps to allow them to strengthen their hands.19/
Done. Just sent a letter to the Ontario Privacy Commissioner asking her to investigate the serious privacy issues around the transfer of Service Ontario Centres to Staples.
Well, here's my two cents worth. Someone set out to kill our PM last week. That is a big deal. The PM's mother and brother were paid honoraria by a charity for public speaking appearances, which is not prohibited under conflict of interest rules. That is not a big deal.
And that is what has been missing throughout this ordeal. Tagging and towing is not an elegant solution. But it is a way to strengthen your negotiating position by showing you have a strong alternative to negotiations.8/
Let me just add, there is nothing wrong with an interest-based approach. It's in the protestors' interest not to be arrested, charged, tagged or towed. Start there. But it is not the police chief's job to try to find a forum to negotiate their grievances.//
Now we know the extent of the scandal over the Greenbelt, there needs to be a full investigation into the Therme Spa deal at Ontario Place, because it was just as secretive and carries a similar stench.
I do not think there is a way to untangle this manuscript in a way to make it comprehensible to readers. I therefore regret that I will have to pass. Another agent may feel differently and I wish you the best of success in getting published.//
Trying to imagine the public uproar if the federal government announced it was going to turn over passport services over to a private retailer like Staples. Don't let Ontario get away with privatizing Service Ontario. It puts our private information at risk.
By announcing that that tagging and towing was not an elegant solution, he was telling us loud and clear (and telling the protesters as well) that he had no intention of enforcing the law.//
Regrettably, your story then immediately shifted into a major world war taking place in Europe. Any one of these plot lines could be the basis of a novel in and of themselves. All three, however, left the story losing focus and I fear the reader would feel somewhat overwhelmed.
My favourite brand of ice cream is even more of a favourite now. The anti-vaxxers are trying to overwhelm their good reviews on Google by posting negative ones. Do Chapman's a favor and post a great review!
While I appreciated your creativity in setting your story in the middle of a pandemic, I thought the narrative strayed from medical thriller into farce with the introduction of the truck convoy. The bouncy castles were simply unbelievable.
And that's it!
@REDBLACKS
are sending me 30 tickets so I can bring all my Ukrainian families (the ones I placed in Ottawa) and their host families to the August 5th game!
Trying to imagine what it would be like if there was regime change in Russia and all the troll farms were permanently shut down. Imagine the impact on climate change initiatives, Covid misinformation, Trump.
Sloly resigned yesterday-- flyers are being handed out like the ones that were handed out to truckers at Windsor before the police moved in, and CTV is reporting that tow trucks are standing by.
He can tag and tow, he can ticket for various infractions, he has the power to make arrests, he can block off roads, he can enforce local bylaws etc. 12/
So here's the problem I have with the WE "scandal." First of all, the media got in a froth claiming that it was a conflict of interest because the PM's wife had done a podcast for WE.
I know a lot of homeless people and consider them friends. Not a single one of them set out to be homeless. Not a single one of them is lazy. A lot of them have had incredibly bad luck and tragedy in their lives and a bit of compassion would go a very long way.
We’re going help get more homes built in small towns and rural communities right across Canada.
We’re finalizing agreements with over 60 communities, which will help fast-track 50,000 homes over the next 10 years!
No, you don't get to comment on the "good"done by the Catholic Church when almost a thousand children's graves have just been found. Not now. Not ever again.
I need some time to think through the implications of this privatization of Service Ontario, but my primary concern would be seeing a database with the most private information of all Ontarians in the hands of a for-profit retail outlet.
I should have seen all of that coming when I heard the words "elegant solution." The elegant solution would be we won't tag and tow your truck if you leave now, which would have met the interests of the protesters and those of the city. 21/
It is not clear to me what exactly Sloly was hoping to see as an elegant solution that would satisfy truckers' interests as well as those of the city and its residents. It's not his job, for example, to discuss vaccine mandates.9/
While I appreciate the quality of your writing, I simply felt overall, that the story was convoluted and weighed down with too much action. As Amadeus said about Mozart's music, there were simply "too many notes."
And he is essentially calling on other levels of government to step in and to negotiate with them, and in effect, to give legitimacy to their demands.20/
WTAF? A private business complying by the law is being told by the police either not to comply with it or close down? How about removing the trespassers instead?
The independent grocer at Bank and Somerset has been overrun. Police have informed them to either not enforce mask mandates or close the store. Parking being used as base camp for

Instead of removing gas cans that were stockpiled at Confederation Park and confiscating them, the NCC was told they were removed when in fact they were simply covered by a tarp.16/
CTV's own statement refers to this is a business decision made due to "changing viewer habits." You can interpret that any way you want, but when they then replace her with a young male, I think it pretty much says everything.
Man, a lot of the people on my timeline have voted already. Is this because of Covid? Or is it because people already know who they support and see no reason to wait?
Because of that, trucks were allowed to enter the core. Vehicles have been deliberately disabled to block off roads. Protesters have been permitted to set up refueling stations throughout the city. 14/
@jmccarty_geo
I remember years ago as a young lawyer drafting a piece of legislation for the Alberta government. I was in the elevator with a judge who had released a decision interpreting a section I had written and I complimented him on getting it right. He said to me "oh did you type it?"
An area that was negotiated for parking purposes only has turned into a staging area with refueling stations and saunas. Protesters were permitted to build a structure in Confederation Park and turn it into a soup kitchen.15/
Well, this is sad news, but not completely unexpected. One of the Ukrainian families I placed here has returned to Kiev. They never got over their homesickness and while they were grateful to visit Canada, they really wanted to go back home. I hope they stay safe.
An "elegant solution" is one that satisfies everyone's interests to some extent. It has to have aspects in it that are tolerable to third parties, satisfactory to the other party to the negotiations and meet your interests as effectively as possible. 3/
So yesterday, Wab Kinew was elected premier of Manitoba, pretty much guaranteeing that the landfill will be searched. Greg Fergus was elected speaker and from what I understand, has shut down one MP for heckling already. Trump is subject to a gag order and Kevin McCarthy is gone.
We were told that the numbers were down to 250-300 protesters and that trucks would be removed, and none of that happened. Now we are told there are approximately 5,000 protesters in the city.17/
This is language that comes from interest-based negotiations of the type I studied at Harvard. You may have heard of the phrase "win-win" solutions. That language was developed by Roger Fisher who I studied with. 2/
Watching Brian Mulroney's funeral service today, I'm just reminded of a time when it was possible for people of all parties to be friends. They disagreed without being disagreeable. It's like a lost era.
The reason Canada has excess vaccines isn't due to hoarding. It's because they did not put all their eggs in one basket. At the time they ordered these vaccines, no-one knew which ones, if any, would work. Spreading out the order was the smart thing to do, in case some didn't.
Zelensky is remarkable. There are only a few times in one's lifetime where a leader of this stature emerges. The only person that comes to mind right now during my life is Mandela. Perhaps Lech Waleza in Poland. Others?
If ground penetrating radar can identify human remains after decades of being buried, why can't it be used to find two victims' bodies in a landfill? Serious question. I do not understand why police called off this search.
So right after a commission of inquiry into the biggest mass shooting in Canadian history recommended that RCMP have post-secondary degrees, Doug Ford is introducing legislation to allow police to qualify with high school?
So maybe you can negotiate where they can stand a safe distance away. That would be an elegant solution. But there's another aspect to interest-based negotiations, which is weakening the other sides position while you strengthen your own.7/
Yet he has referred to the issue with the truckers as being societal, and the protests not ending until there is a plan to resolve the global pandemic, and as the issue extending nationwide. 10/
People in Ontario may not fully understand just how many Ukrainian-Canadians live in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. I lived in Alberta for well over a decade. There is a HUGE presence. This is our war too.
Let's see. One side is carrying out constitutionally entrenched and protected section 35 rights to commercially fish to gain a moderate livelihood. The other is engaging in vandalism, arson and assault. There are no two sides to see here.
Certainly, an interest-based solution is an ideal outcome. For example, when people protest an abortion clinic, one of their interests is to be able to protest while people running the clinic and patients want to have access without being harassed.6/
Trying to imagine how the White House would respond if the mayor of Washington DC gave occupiers driving giant trucks written permission to move closer to the White House.
Say what you will about Trudeau, he would never have sent Dr Tam out on her own to deliver such an incoherent policy. If someone can explain to me what delaying school openings by two days is supposed to achieve, I'd be grateful, because Moore wasn't able to.
So I am not shocked by the resignation. I am simply surprised the Police services Board itself didn't demand it sooner. One man's incompetence has resulted in millions of dollars of damages and disruption. And it isn't over yet.//
Ontario Govt to phase out free testing of well water for citizens.
Exactly where, are you putting more money into our pockets? Cause we're not seeing it 💡 🇨🇦
