People simultaneously complaining that parking charges are too high *and* the car parks are too busy. 🤯
(This article doesn't even mention the park and ride or a train station 5 minutes from the beach front.)
All
@nationaltrust
members - even non-drivers - get free parking at most NT car parks.
But where are the incentives for leaving the car at home (and leaving more spaces for members who rely on their cars)?
Members who don't use the free parking should get a discount.
@bbcsomerset
Having witnessed someone with a baby in a pushchair forced to share the A359 with lorries due to cars blocking the pavement, it's hard to find any sympathy.
@YPLAC
Our town built a new housing estate of 300 homes half a mile (a 10-15 minute walk) from the town centre and this is part of the direct step-free route for pedestrians. 🤦♂️
The alternative route adds half a mile and a stretch with no footway.
All Yeovil Services Update: All customers please be aware that ALL Yeovil Services are now being delayed due to the Friday traffic congestion in town. Please be patient with us and we will get to you as quick as we can. Thank You. BC
Tis the season to offer free parking despite no evidence it helps the local economy and lots of evidence drivers put the availability of parking spaces above the cost of parking when visiting a town or city.
@wonderfullyarty
@carltonreid
Surely encouraging more people not to drive so there's more space for those who must is a good thing? Or am I being thick?
@TransportActio2
Yes! I can get easily get trolley's worth on my bike. But it's difficult to find decent cycle parking at a supermarket. It's usually no good for bulky panniers - if they have any at all (the Lidl near me has nothing).
@BBCBristol
Yep. It wouldn't be an issue if drivers parked sensibly and left space for pedestrians but it's become so normalised that they think nothing of parking on the footway even when there's plenty of space on the road.
@the_transit_guy
Southampton (UK) used to be a walled city. They knocked down the walls for roads. Then pedestrianized most of the roads a few years later.

Thanks for the response. My main issue was that all the options about parking on the website and menu when I called 101 took me to a dead end so I couldn't even speak to someone about it or submit a report. 999 was offered but that seemed inappropriate.
@bike_rogers
Good luck to those in cars too! I can never get my head round why people who rely on cars are against measures to enable more people to choose more efficient means of travel.
The National Cycle Network (Route 26) near Sherborne.
(To be fair, I've heard a local councillor may be working with Sustrans and the landowner to get this stretch improved and/or find an alternative route.)
Refreshing to see these Somerset pubs pay for customers' bus travel (not sure many will have a return ticket on them though when singles are £2 each)
@SomersetBusPart
@drewsnx
I actually blamed parked cars when someone got irate with me the other day because they couldn't overtake me. Straight, wide road. No oncoming traffic. But dozens of illegally parked cars in the way.
Today officers from the Wincanton Neighbourhood Policing Team attended Castle Cary Train Station.
The officers issued Parking Penalty Notices to 57 vehicles in total.
@profclairelucas
@AldiUK
I wish supermarkets would highlight their bike parking in their websites (even if you can lift them out of the ground!). I'm currently trying to find out if
@AldiUK
in Yeovil has bike parking.
@oodavid
@ChilliRoad
That's horrendous! (The before shot, obvs.) Why can't drivers follow simple rules? The "war on the motorist" lot should be educating drivers instead of moaning about restrictions on driving that are clearly needed.
And this is part of the route to the secondary school for the majority of students on the west side of the town. It's a popular rat-run but the Council could make it safer instantly by restricting through traffic at school start and end times.
@njbramley
Who said anything about getting rid of free parking? It would be nice if drivers could cover the cost though, instead of expecting non-drivers to contribute as they do now.
@carltonreid
A lot of the replies here are assuming that parked cars aren't an issue yet it seems about 40% of homes don't have off-street parking and many homes have multiple cars and vans.
Just about managed to squeeze through without damaging the car (or pram) but it's not hard to see why the cost of car insurance is through the roof.
@yplac
First big shop (mostly party bits) with the cargo bike.
I probably swerved a few impulse buys because I was fretting how much I could get home. I needn't have worried (didn't even use the rack at the front).
@sigirides
I've noticed a lot of "pork" (as in "you can't educate pork") have replied to this. My advice is not to engage with them - absolute waste of time.
Parking for the day at Sandbanks is £19.60. I paid £2.50 for an hour to drop off the family. Then parked for free a mile away and enjoyed a 20-min harbourside walk. I feel bad for adding to pollution and congestion but the couple who nabbed my space were delighted.
Now drivers are posting pics of the traffic on FB. While driving of course. Not sure the "you're not stuck in traffic, you are traffic" will chime with them.
While Dorset Council offers free parking at Christmas, Somerset Council is offering free bus travel (if only for one day on Tues 19 Dec).
One of the routes (the 58) passes through Sherborne, so Dorset residents and businesses could benefit.
@gazza_d
It doesn't help that all the shops are moving to out-of-town retail parks, which are a nightmare to access on foot or by cycle in my experience.
@sw7179
@emilyhewertson
Motorists should pay the full cost of driving first. There's a circa £40 billion a year shortfall between what motoring taxes contribute and the societal costs of driving.
@don_dapper
This looks like one of those soulless out-of-town retail parks that people "would rather go to than the high street because there's free parking."
One good thing about Rishi Sunak wanting to limit "15-minute cities" is that people who aren't into urban planning or faux conspiracies are now looking up what they are and saying, "Ooh, that's sensible."
Apparently, there's a "war on motorists" but it's really just years of drivers taking too many liberties. E.g.:
- not bothering with indicators
- pavement parking
- blocking crossings
- parking on double yellows/stopping in "no waiting" zones
- speeding
- driving short distances
