hey! you’re part of it | transportation planner 🅿️, pop music lover, and man of many trivial pursuits | views are my own | he/him ♎️

“those who can afford a bicycle” is such a bizarre phrase when discussing bikes and cars — even the most expensive bikes are cheaper than almost all used cars, to say nothing of insurance, maintenance, gas, etc.
This ballot measure would go beyond reversing car-free JFK by undoing the car bans along stretches of Martin Luther King Drive and Bernice Rogers Way that together form a bike and pedestrian spine along the length of Golden Gate Park.

@zachheltzel @Dave_Horwitz INT: NYC condo, night.WILL MCAVOY, who just moderated the first 2020 presidential debate, wakes up in the middle of the night with a dry cough. he checks his phone, stares at it, and immediately throws it against the wall.

I love being a transportation planner but it's really unfortunate how many people in our profession are sociopaths who want to do things like demolish homes to widen a freeway in 2020.
@aceckhouse Finally found the maps for the I-605 widening, and yikes that's a lot of homes being demolished in Downey.

In celebration of my appointment last month to SF's Redistricting Task Force, over the next several weeks I'm going to walk all 48 miles of Supervisor district boundaries in San Francisco! #RaynellWalksTheLines

@alfred_twu The urbanist / college football fan overlap is so incredibly tiny so I’m loving how many brains this is breaking.

hot take: spending $100,000,000+ on parking infrastructure is not the best way to make a city car-light.
My most controversial urbanism opinion:. The City of Los Angeles should be building dozens of municipal parking garages throughout the city. They are necessary to make the transition to a car-light LA possible.

@McJesse @CMikeWhitfield I’m a counterfactual (intact room, not-very-rich family) but I’d like to think this is more true than not. I think 1) being an only child and 2) living in a house with a basement offset the money thing.

Thank you to the Elections Commission for making the right choice and allowing me and my colleagues to continue our service. I would say “back to work” but we never stopped.
JUST IN: The San Francisco Elections Commission voted unanimously Friday not to remove the three volunteers it appointed to the city’s nine-member Redistricting Task Force despite concerns from some advocacy groups.

@DeanPreston @CSElmendorf can you please stop using Black Lives Matter-inspired language in your defense of San Francisco's racist zoning laws?.

@JakeAnbinder the mountainness of California was something I didn't fully appreciate until I came here. The highest point in the City of Los Angeles is higher than the high point of 27 states, including WV and PA.

@thecliffbar makes absolutely zero sense that Dutch crunch is not a nationally-available sandwich bread option.

It was a lightbulb moment for me when I realized that environmental activism and climate activism often have different goals, the former often with a massively outdated understanding of what we need to do to create a sustainable California.
I am increasingly of the opinion that the environmentalist movement's opposition to modernizing environmental laws for climate change and the housing crisis is an existential issue for Californians. This week I am extremely worried this problem can't be solved. 🧵.

@typicalfeminist @redditships it really all comes down to what exactly she asked she could do and with what but I highly doubt she did this intentionally to be abusive.

"1) build a sports brand that only attracts dumb people.2) open a sportsbook .3) profit".was a genius long con if that's what they were going for.
Barstool Sportsbook was third in overall action in Pennsylvania, but did finish #1 in revenue, thanks to an unreal 19.1% hold percentage, which has to a sportsbook record for a month. Translation: They made more money from their bettors per dollar than any book in history.

Fun fact: you can’t bring your bike to Salesforce Park, built on top of a transit center, unless you’re a cop @TransbayProject

I earnestly though making #CarFreeJFK permanent was going to be a slam dunk, but it looks like it's very much in jeopardy. I hope this gem doesn't get taken away from us.

No car on our streets should be able to go this fast. We have the technology to do this, it is purely an issue of political courage.
Henry Ruggs III reached a speed of 156 mph and had a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit before the early-morning crash Tuesday that killed a 23-year-old woman and her dog.

@JackieFielder_ @sflabor @IFPTE21 we don't have to push austerity onto essential workers, but we do have to push them into traffic by blocking a bike lane I guess.

@sponhourm at the time I considered them to be selfless giants but now as an adult I realize that they, too, just wanted to watch the games and probably didn't want to be at school.
