We carry 28,000 people per hour through our Transbay Tube under the bay because of the capacity of a train. That’s nearly twice as much as cars over the bay. Why wouldn’t you prioritize something that carries far more (and safely with automatic train control) over cars?
@quayran
Opposite is true: you can have 100’s of layers of tunnels, but only one layer on surface (to first approximation), therefore trains should be on surface, cars below
Murder suspect now in custody! BART Police took him into custody at Pleasant Hill BART. Full details to come and Chief availability at Rockridge BART at 8pm. Thank you BPD and thank riders for keeping your eye out!!
Murder suspect identified in MacArthur stabbing. John Cowell is considered dangerous. Please call 911 if spotted. RIP Nia Wilson. We will bring this suspect to justice. Our thoughts are with the family and friends. Details:

First, wow, what an honor to host a baseball superstar like Shohei Ohtani on BART.
We did not experience any issues on our end. We confirmed with Operations Control Center there was no delay for any Coliseum-heading train during the Bay Bridge incident.
There was an accident on the Bay Bridge, so the
#Angels
team bus couldn't make it to Oakland. So they had to take the BART but there was an issue there, too. Ohtani didn't have enough time to get ready for his start so it's pushed back to tomorrow.
Congrats and all our best wishes to Amit and Anuja, who met on BART and proposed to each other last month on BART!
They first met at Civic Center Station 2 years ago, kept running into each other on the trains, went on a date and the rest was history! 🎉🎉🎉
This mini horse is a service animal, and the owner provided paperwork to a station agent stating so. After consultation (station agents usually don’t see horses), the horse was allowed in.
Trained service animals assisting people w/ disabilities and on leash are welcome on BART
Tonight we are thankful for John.
He’s a former Train Operator who was promoted to Transportation Supervisor. He was working the Coliseum Station for the Raiders game and saw someone on the platform who needed help. He saved a life tonight.
Thank you John.
Show him some love.
We at BART will forever miss you, Courtney. Courtney asked us tough questions and demanded accountability while being our biggest supporter. We will never forget the joy you expressed when you finally boarded a Fleet of the Future train. Rest In Peace.
It is widely documented that people with autism often have a natural affinity for trains, and BART couldn't be more thrilled to celebrate that during
#AutismAcceptanceMonth
.
See where the announcements are playing and listen to the recordings:
BART turns 50 and instead of interviewing a qualified professor/historian or urban planning expert they give space for an anti-government, anti-tax, climate denying think tank that wants to privatize transit.
At least watch to see Oscar, our station agent turned manager, shine.
Here is the dramatic platform video of our humble hero John O'Connor saving a man's life at the Coliseum station Sunday night. John is a Transportation Supervisor and has worked at BART for more than 20 years. An amazing rescue.
Barty wants to thank all the ONCEs who took the train to the
@JYPETWICE
concert instead of driving to Oakland Arena.
What a night! We had huge ridership and the fans filled our trains with joy!
Attention fans of the BART Anime Mascots. The time has come...
We just dropped official mascot merch on
We have acrylic standees and sticker sheets of all the mascots: Baylee, Jasmine, Mira, and Nimbus.
Go get 'em. 🐐
We lost our Twitter checkmark today. We applied with Twitter to receive verification reserved for government entities. We have not heard back yet.
Anyways. It's a beautiful day in the Bay Area. We currently have 59 trains in service. No delays reported. Thank you for riding BART
Tomorrow, 4/20, we are removing legacy verified checkmarks. To remain verified on Twitter, individuals can sign up for Twitter Blue here:

They're here! BART is excited to unveil anime mascots making its debut at
@FanimeCon
, the largest anime convention in the Bay Area!
Our anime mascots are here to promote public transit and engage with youth riders. 🚆🐐✍️🌱✨⚙️
Heading to FanimeCon next week for the largest anime convention in the Bay Area?
Public transit can take you to FanimeCon! And this year, BART has got some friends to help you get there 👀 👀
More to come next week~
Face masks are once again required on BART.
The Board of Directors voted to require face masks effective immediately until 10/1/22.
The board will decide if the mandate should be extended beyond 10/1 on 9/22.
Please wear well fitted masks that cover both your nose and mouth.
Please stop implying no one is riding BART.
Yesterday were served 41,187 trips. People who can’t work from home.
53% of our riders right now don’t have access to a vehicle.
Do not dismiss them.

@SFBART
's long-sought second TransBay Tube could be coming by 2040, under a new plan unveiled today. Let's hope by then people are back to riding BART again...
Meet the BART goats: BART is relying on a voracious herd of goats to graze on dry vegetation on BART's right-of-way property.
Facing another dry, hot summer in the Bay Area, these goats are helping reduce wildfire risk on BART property and help BART's sustainability goals.
Would you take BART more if we:
1) Added a 6th line🟥🟧🟨🟩🟦🟪🤯
2) Added trains after 9pm 🌉🚇
We are studying new service concepts for the future.
Take the BART Metro: 2030 and Beyond Survey:
Meet Laura and Jeremy, who took BART to their wedding in Oakland on Saturday! They took the Dublin line train from Powell to Lake Merritt with the groomsmen and bridesmaids aboard.
Congrats on your marriage, from your friendly local transit agency! 🎊🎊🎊
Meet Norman. He’s an Oakland native who’s been at BART 6 years and cleans the Bay Fair and Castro Valley stations and bathrooms.
We saw this tweet praising how clean the bathroom was and we tracked him down to give him some much deserved appreciation.
Show him some love.
Reading a book on the train is a tale-old tradition many BART riders partake in.
To encourage reading for those even without a book, BART is piloting touchless

Short Story Dispensers, which print out short stories, at 4 BART stations.
Uber CEO
@dkhos
: "We want you to be able to say, 'Should I take the BART? Should I take a bike? Should I take an Uber?' All of it to be real time information, all of it to be optimized for you, and all of it to be done with the push of a button."

It is the Ca Penal Code. Panhandling is not a crime and is protected under the constitution as free speech.
But aggressive panhandling by accosting someone is a misdemeanor.
It's happening: the pandas are coming to San Francisco!
These Giant Pandas will honor our deep cultural connections and our Chinese and API heritage. They will bring residents and visitors from all over who come to visit them at the SF Zoo.
Communicating data is important.
It shows:
✅People are staying home if they can
✅There are people who must report to work and the role we play getting them there
✅There is no crowding, so riders can be reassured there is social distancing
✅It’s better than saying nothing
BART recently doubled the frequency of deep cleaning the inside of train cars because a clean ride is very important.
We are also ISO 9001-2015 certified and have surprise audits to make sure the cars are in tip-top shape after a thorough clean.
A big shout out to these crews!
Alex, we've asked ourselves that question too but to our surprise, many of our merchandise sell out with an hour after announcement. We have much work to improve our system but this slice of BART support has been a real morale booster for us and a delight for our transit fans.
@SFBART
I can’t imagine one person who would want to buy Bart merch 🙄 how bout you take the money you spend making merch and upgrade the infrastructure

More people are turning to transit to avoid high gas prices and to take a sustainable form of transportation.
On Tuesday, we served 7,834 more trips compared to the previous Tuesday. Ridership was 124,425 (30% of pre-pandemic).
Our power supply is 100% greenhouse gas free.
The Bay Bridge is blocked.
Take BART as an alternative, our tube can carry more folks under this bridge anyways.
We now have trains every 15 minutes (even more frequent for many sections).
Plenty of parking. You can pay with cash or the official BART app.
Wear a mask.

BART is turning 50 years old. We'd love for you to celebrate our big day with us.
On Saturday, September 10, from 11am-4pm, we are hosting a public celebration at Lake Merritt Station.
It's free to the public with food trucks, music, games, prizes and a time capsule opening.
Yesterday, BART received 10,000 disposable masks from Shanghai Metro. We're moved by Metro's generosity. 谢谢, 上海地铁!
The masks will be used for BART employees and for officers to give out to riders who need one.
"Through thick and thin [sic] friendship lasts forever" 🤝
This morning at 9am BART trains will slow to a stop with a systemwide announcement that we are pausing in the name of George Floyd, who will be laid to rest at that moment, to honor his name and the commitment to end racism and hate.
Staff was asked to get creative with solutions to help prevent spread of Coronavirus.
One idea was this prototype of a personal hand strap we would give out for free. Riders can take them home and clean it before use.
We want to know if this is worthwhile before we order more.
Starting today, you'll hear the voices of some of BART’s biggest fans playing over our 🔊 PA system.
Local youth with autism recently recorded special announcements that will be playing in 35 stations through April, which is
#AutismAcceptanceMonth
Today the BART Board gave final approval to build 457 housing units (with nearly 30% affordable to low and middle income households) on our parking lot property at the Lake Merritt Station.
And this is only the first phase of bringing homes steps away from this station!
Effective 9/11:

The ability to pay for BART simply by tapping a credit or debit card is in the works.
The next generation of Clipper will be rolled out in 2024 and includes “open payment” and transfer discounts.
This also includes Google and Apple Pay without needing a digital Clipper card.
Thank you Suga stans for taking transit!
We ran by staff to see how much Suga of BTS's solo tour concerts at Oakland Arena on May 16 and May 17 impacted BART's high ridership figures.
Results are in: quite a Big Hit! Y'all are awesome 🫶
#SUGA_AgustD_TOUR_in_Oakland
Yesterday, May 17, 2023, was BART's third highest ridership day since March 2020 and start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
1) 6/20/22 (Warriors parade): 190,519
2) 9/14/22: 184,088
3) 5/17/23 (yesterday): 183,304
4) 5/16/23: 182,319
Bay Area needs transit and are returning to transit
We love big bikes and cannot lie. With Bike to Wherever Day this Friday, we have some bike news we can't deny.
BART has seen increasing number of cargo bikes and e-bikes in the system. Bicyclists have been playing a key part of our ridership recovery.
Here's a bike-friendly 🧵
It is with great sorrow to report also the BART employee who called the OCC to confirm the Ohtani delay was en route to catch BART to go to the Coliseum to see Ohtani pitch. We are hurting too by this news.
A BART employee is being credited with saving a rider's life early Monday at the Dublin/Pleasanton Station. Vincent Seals, an end of the line cleaner, revived a young man multiple times and says it was fate that he was there to help.

We tabled at

in San Jose to introduce our new anime mascots and to provide attendees with free promotional BART tickets and postcards with public transit information.
The line to BART table went out the building and needed crowd control, per staff at scene 😭
We are flattered to learn BART is on this morning’s

crosswords, but we want to say
@SFMTA_Muni
may find fault with BART being called “San Francisco’s metro”
If you haven't mixed us, a public transit system, up with a nonparametric Bayesian regression approach which uses dimensionally adaptive random basis elements, are you even from the Bay?
Hey
@CaltransD4
perhaps you could suggest taking BART as an alternative. This sign is right at the exit for the Orinda BART station (literally 30 seconds from the freeway) w/ trains every 10 mins into SF.
Thanks for the consideration. We are trying to help get cars off the road.
