Small hill farmer in the Co Antrim hills. . You might observe I’m quite opinionated about a few things. it’s important not to take yourself too seriously 😉
In case I was under any illusion that there was money in sheep. That’s what 150kg of wool is worth. If you’re paying £100 for a nice wool jumper not much is going to the person at the bottom of the supply chain. 😬
40yrs ago today, I stood nervously At the front of a church waiting on this absolute stunner coming up the aisle. Those years have gone in a flash. Somehow she’s stuck with me & my mad ideas. 😍
@invermilarne
Wool processing is mostly in the hands of a few big operators 😬. China had stopped buying during Covid. We really need a wool processing Co-op on this island
@DavidOldbridge
£75?? More than double that. I don’t begrudge the lad who clipped them his fee. It’s jolly hard work. He’s tidy about what he does, no animals mishandled & not one cut. That deserves a fair fee.
After all the stuff this morning about no insects, I’m mowing this wee clover rich field & my favourite things happen. The swallows descend to ‘feed on the wing’. What are they feeding on? Insects rising in their thousands out of the crop I’m mowing. Nature at its best 😍
Daughter rings me last night. “Dad I’m coming up after work, mum n me are going to watch Eurovision together. Do you want to join us?” Me- “ I’ve got 3 rolls of barbed wire to untangle. I’d rather do that” I suspect she just rang to hear the response 😆
@MarkRobinsonNI
The biggest problem is the specialist kit to get the wool from fleece to yarn. It requires a lot of investment in equipment. I’ve been part of a group looking at a community of producers & weavers/spinners/knitters. Lack of money is the drawback.
@campbellclaret
@POTUS
It’s clear Alistair. There was a whole series of stuff that had to be binned because the DUP are holding out. The original plan would have been for the President to address the Assembly & cheer them on. 😬
@jude_teacher
For those of us of a certain age, he entertained us for years. A truly talented man. I’m not surprised at your warm tribute, he oozed goodness. I trust you all find comfort in the midst of your loss.
@TootsieCouper
@Rhiani
& if you moved to the countryside, you’d also find, peace & quiet, neighbours that know (& care for) each other, clean air, good food & lots more. If you’re inquisitive & respectful, you’ll find us yokels are the best people you ever met. 😉
@stellacollins
@LeShuttle
So let me see, Brexit was all about Britain taking back control of its borders, but if France decides to control its borders it’s brexit spite? 🙄
@News_Letter
That’s the same Priti who ‘threatened’ to starve the Irish during the Brexit referendum. She was blissfully unaware that Ireland now feeds half of England 😉
@herdyshepherd1
There’s still loads of grandfathers gates on our farm. If you look carefully you’ll see a join on the top rail of this one. He spent his winters in his forge beating cart hoops straight & made the gates from those. 👍
Wow. I hadn’t reckoned on my little tweet about wool prices creating such as fuss. Sincere thanks to everyone who’s commenting. Thankfully wool isn’t the only thing we sell. High quality, high welfare lamb is our aim + our best return is from selling sheep for breeding….
There are people who live in cities who tell me (with a straight face) that livestock farming is the most environmentally destructive thing in the world today. 🙄
@KevinPMeagher
I always laugh at the ‘meat products being sourced from Britain’. Only 5% of NI’s farmland is arable. We produce enough food (meat & dairy) to feed 10M. The idea that we need to import meat is preposterous. We’re feeding England not the other way round. 🙄
@adampayne26
@politicshome
This will hurt Johnston. He knows full well that the EU (same as most ordinary people) didn’t believe a word he said. Sunak has earned their trust & has got a solution. What’s more he’s played a blinder by getting it a Royal nod. Bojo is stuffed. Not before time.
@BenGoldsmith
@NaturalEngland
Pardon the pun Ben, but it’s rather rich that the gentry giving ordinary farmers a lecture about how much we get paid. Especially when you & your Brexit mates have managed to strip £2.6Bn out of the system due to Brexit. I honestly don’t know how you have the cheek. 🙄
@OatlyUK
Hey Oatly, just to let you know. Apart from your false claims, sales of real milk in the UK rose by 11.2 million litres last year. It seems most of us prefer real milk to the fake stuff.
Sometimes your worst fears aren’t realised. I found this lamb just before dark cold & stiff. I brought it in but TBH I thought it was too far gone. However by 1am it had got its head up & I got milk into it. This was it at 6am.
@PaulHaymoorland
@BeckettUnite
You’d be worse off. The Crown Estate is a cash cow for the government, Charles, like his mother has volunteered to give the proceeds to the Treasury.
@claire_flynn
Brilliant. In 1993 we bought a house needing renovation. The sellers (children of the late owners) wanted us to pay extra for the threadbare carpets. When we refused they got a skip & dumped them out of spite. Revealing... beech parquet floors in all the ground floor rooms 😆
@bbctheview
@CatharineHoey
@MarkCarruthers7
I’m wondering why a person who was an MP for years & showed no interest in her home place suddenly is now an authority when she’s effectively retired. I’m also curious (given she doesn’t represent anyone) why she’s on your programme?
@AtiyyaClare
@DougWanstall
@Permajuncture
Clare, what you need to avoid is jumping to conclusions based on a rather biased PETA video. Get yourself out onto a real farm & see how we handle our livestock
@AlexKane221b
I see Gregory & other DUP people putting this spin on it. Here’s the real truth. Once the EU found a team in London who were willing to share data & pause the illegal protocol bill, they started to move. That could have happened 2 years earlier. 😉
@dup_online
What the DUP (& a lot of the media) fail to appreciate is that the protocol was primarily about protecting the agri food sector from the worst of Brexit.
@castlvillageman
100%. It’s the same with the American hormone fed beef & chlorinated chicken. It’s simply not practical to transport it fresh dye to the distances. But the big corporations will lap up the opportunity to load the market with frozen & processed stuff.
@benhabib6
@BorisJohnson
@POTUS
@RishiSunak
Hey Ben. Remember that sovereignty you Brexiteers all wanted back. Yes the BRITISH parliament- that Sovereignty. They backed the WF. It’s over. Pipe down & stay out of our affairs
@EamonnMallie
@colin_davidson
I think as a community we have to seriously ask ourselves. How did we get from supporting John Hume & David Trimble to where we are now. Why don’t the voices of moderation succeed now like they did then.
@JoannaBlythman
@theJeremyVine
I must say I had a chuckle today at the antics of Dr Sarah Jarvis explaining all the supplements needed for a vegan diet. By definition, any diet that needs supplementing is deficient 🙄
I’m staying in Dublin, literally opposite the home of Guinness. Am I doing the tour I’ve long promised myself? Apparently not, a walk in Phoenix Park will be much better for me. Who knew? 😉
people say ‘Twitter is a sewer’. Yes I see some idiots that are abusive. Truth is though, they’re outnumbered many times over by really nice people (just like real life). I’m amazed at the dozens who liked my wee post today or congratulated myself & my wife. You’re all lovely 👍
@edwinpootsmla
Yes absolutely Edwin. The people of NI do need matters put right. A majority rejected your hard brexit deal. Are your going to apologise for the mess you made?
@boohoo
If you’re interested in animal welfare I can send you some pictures of a sheep with blowfly strike ( strong stomach needed). If you’re really interested in helping farmers then a decent price for our wool would be good. It costs more the shear the sheep than the wool is worth
@gavreilly
@VirginMediaNews
In the unlikely event his wee bill makes it through the commons, the Lords will do that same as they’ve done with Truss’s protocol bill, send it into the weeds for a long time. 😉
@SaraONeillArt
@JamieBrysonCPNI
Sectarianism is endemic in NI Jamie. If you go south of the border, people of all creeds & none are involved in Gaelic Sports. The question you must answer, is whether you’re making the problem worse or better. I think we know the answer 😉
@TheMarijaMaher
What I see there is a child who despite losing their dad has been receiving love from their mum, who despite her own grief has tried her best to care for them. 😍😍 that’s an amazing achievement. Be kind to yourself this Christmas- you deserve it. 👍
@nutrition_facts
Ah. The little word associated. It’s an interesting picture you have there too. The egg shown is clearly part of a junk food meal. Try eating some real eggs from hens that run outside. Proper food. I eat loads of them.
So just a wee note to my followers on here. I’m curating the
@IrelandsFarmers
account from tomorrow so I’m signing off my own account until next weekend. Fingers crossed that I don’t muck it up 😬
@DunkinWedd
@InsulateLove
Here’s the thing Laurie. (Having built a low carbon house). Wool insulation is among the most expensive. Someone is making a mint along the way. 😬
@deathtospinach
Well done Becky. Very brave post. We all have a chuckle at your witty posts. None of us knew about this other stuff & you didn’t have to tell us. You’re a stronger person for being able to say this. Best wishes.
@mechupan3
@shl0erpapi
Sadly, your comment betrays a total lack of understanding about the circumstances some people find themselves in. I’m guessing you’ve never found yourself in a similar situation or took the time to get to know anyone who has.
Thanks to the weird mild weather, instead of getting the bale feeder out, I’m letting the ewes back into the herbal ley that I’d shut up for the winter 😬
@JamieBrysonCPNI
That’s the same former Home Secretary who threatened to starve Ireland during the Brexit referendum. She, like most right wingers was blissfully unaware that Ireland now feeds half of England 😉
#BrexitHasFailed
@PollyPositively
@dmcbfs
To all those who’ve a habit of stereotyping Co Antrim from afar. Today, if you care to notice, is evidence that we aren’t all narrow minded bigots. In fact the vast majority of people here are decent reasonable people. Just like everywhere really.
We had an unusual visitor to the farm yesterday. Our daughter in law is Russian & her mum has managed to get over to visit her youngest grandson, born during lockdown. She has a long & convoluted route out of Russia, but is in good spirits 👍
@marinapla
@GeorgeMonbiot
@Channel4
It’s neither urgent or relevant if George is involved. Anyhow it’s being broadcast on a public service broadcaster. It’s bad enough that a broadcaster owned by the taxpayer can show this nonsense in the uk without showing it to the world too.
@DPJHodges
One of the main reasons Mick Lynch was such a hit was because he was someone who appeared to have honestly held convictions & articulated them simply. A far cry from most of the cabinet 😬
@lwhemmings
Hi Luke. There’s several Sitka plantations around me (by definition they aren’t forests). They’re all like this. What’s more they’re planted on upland peat & don’t even start me on the mess when they’re clear felled. To compound it all, the resulting timber is poor quality 😬
@AlisonLevett1
@RNLI
In every community there are dedicated people who often put themselves in harm’s way to save the lives of others. We value them highly (as we should) There are also charlatans who are self serving & care little for anyone but themselves. We can all work out who’s who 😉
@Chris_Lyttle
@stewartcdickson
@allianceparty
The biggest favour he could do for P7 children this year is to suspend the test & force the Grammar schools to admit pupils on a simple assessment from their primary school. I doubt his ideology will allow that though. 😬
@AdeAdepitan
@1GarethWynJones
Sorry Ade. You need to reflect (I continue to believe you’re a decent honourable man). If you check the responses (many of them angry) it ain’t a lobby, just loads of farmers who know you’re wrong. Here’s an option. Take the debate off SM & visit some of us on our farms…
@Independent_ie
I’d question whether that piglet is old enough to be weaned let alone go to an abattoir. Perhaps
@Independent_ie
You might be better off investigating the motives of so called vegan. There was a recent illegal raid on a pig farm. Could there be a connection? Just wondering.
@AlexKane221b
She chose well Alex. She modelled love & commitment & now so are you to the next generation 👍 Tonight in our house my wife was reading bedtime stories to a traumatised 5yr old, who’s spent most of this week kicking the shins off her. That won’t put her off. 😍
@DoctorChristian
This fits the original definition of ‘Go fraud me’. You treated legal proceedings with contempt & are paying the price. Anyone who contributes a penny is a fool.
@KBSquared4
@BestForBritain
@timloughton
KB. There’s always been decent people in the Conservative Party. Tim is one such person. Sadly others left since the ascendancy of the ERG.
@kateaustin496
@SleepyMcEwan
@BendyBen999
@thatginamiller
Nonsense. What Gina Millar is correctly identifying is an attempt by some forces to take control of a situation & use it fir their own ends. If extra powers are needed they must be under the scrutiny of parliament. That’s all Gina Millar has ever asked
@BBCMarkSimpson
@DannyDonnelly1
You’ve discovered our country ways Mark. People like to poke fun at the culchies. Truth is, that’s how we operate, right across this island. 👍
@BelfastAgmt
Happy birthday GFA. You’re 21. You can go out on yer own now 😉. Seriously I still remember being outside the gates of the Stormont Estate at 9am that morning, tears running down my face for friends lost & praying they’d finish the job. I’m thankful they did.
@zoeharcombe
My wife reminded me recently, of what I said when I saw the lockdown being enforced in Wuhan in December 2019 “that could never happen in a western country”. 😬
