Successive govts. have been far too reliant on “opportunity / constraint” mapping, presumably driven by remote data and algorithms - to the point where stuff can’t happen even though it’s clearly the right thing if you just looked on the ground or listened to the people who do.
So this week in the world of farm/environment/land management/ mapping has been “interesting”. And by “interesting” I mean “verging on the utterly bonkers”. Why? Well this week started with Natural England, the government body that looks after the environment launching a new map.
